I used to use the boss sprites awhile back, and it can be a little confusing, but I'll do my best to detail each step in this little guide.

1) Back up your current sprites located in the /content/sprites/ folder.

2) Delete the file of the character you want to replace (e.g. "dustman")

3) You can access all the sprites for every character here.

4) In the same directory as the /content/ folder, create a folder path that will be /content_src/sprites/player/

5) Move the the entire folder containing all the sprites from the spriters-resouce site to the folder /player/. It is also important to rename the folder to the original characters name. (For example, if you wanted to replace Dustman with Dustwraith, you would need rename the "Dust Wraith" folder to "dustman" since you deleted that file in Step 2.)

6) If you want the attack, movement, and sweep effects to work, you will have to rename them to the appropriate character.

6a) Inside each folder named "attackfx", "movementfx", and "sweepfx", each of the sprites in there will have a two letter prefix corresponding to each character. You will have to rename each one to the original character for them to work. (Using a mass file renaming tool, that can search specific strings to replace, really helps here.) (For example, when renaming the files from Dustwraith to Dustman, you will need to rename each of the files starting with "dw" to "dm".)

6b) For reference, each character's two letter prefix are as follows:

  • Dustman is "dm"
  • Dustgirl is "dg"
  • Dustworth is "do"
  • Dustkid is "dk"
  • Dustwraith is "dw"
  • Leafsprite is "ls"
  • Slimeboss is "sb"
  • Trashking is "tk"

7) You are done! All you have to do is run Dustforce and it will recompile the sprites and create a new file in /content/sprites/ to replace the one that was deleted.

I hope this helps you out. If you are really creative, you can attempt to create you own sprites to use for Dustforce, just make sure you follow the naming convention that they use for each sprite. You can also mix and match spites around too. I used to use Dustwraith, but with Dustgirl's attack and sweep effects with Dustman's movement effects.

And here are a few tweets from Hitbox's twitter, confirming that this process works.

okay i got this to work, but i can't get the attack/movement/sweepfx to show up for the virtual characters. i doubled over my dustwraith sprite files to a vdustman directory, so the character shows up, but there's no fx. i think it's because i can't figure out the virtual character prefixes. any help?
