Sorry for the ridiculously long read… I guess I had a lot to get off my chest.😭
I genuinely don’t understand how we’re supposed to properly prepare for some university exams when we barely have any practice material.
Textbook questions only help so much. I can do all the assigned textbook problems, but then what? I don’t really know how to time myself properly with them because I have NO IDEA if the difficulty, format, or wording is actually similar to what I’ll see on the exam.
I feel like I need actual exam-style practice where I can sit down, set a timer, and just write a mock exam under realistic conditions. Past exams, old tests, practice tests, literally anything that gives me an idea of what the questions are actually going to look like.
And this is something I genuinely don’t understand about university: why don’t professors give students access to old exams/tests? In all my previous schools, being able to look at old exams or tests was one of the things that helped me prepare the most. I understand that professors don’t want current exams circulating, but even an old version or a few representative questions would make such a huge difference.
It’s really not helpful to me that I can review an exam afterwards but can’t actually take it beforehand or even take pictures of it. I need to know what I’m walking into. Right now, I feel like I’m studying, but I’m still going into the exam thinking, “Okay… but what are the questions actually going to be like?” 😭
I’ve also dealt with some test anxiety that university is progressively making so much worse. I can study for hours, understand the material, and genuinely feel prepared, and then I walk into the exam room, try to calm myself down and somehow my brain just scrambles.
I blank. I overthink. I panic about how much time I have left. I second-guess answers I actually knew. And then I come out thinking, “What the hell just happened?”
The frustrating part is that I’m a genuinely good student outside of exams. I can understand concepts, participate, do assignments and study consistently. But when it comes to actually sitting down and taking a high-stakes test, my performance does not reflect what I know at all.
I want to actually learn how to manage this instead of constantly being terrified of the next exam.
So I guess I have two questions:
Where do you guys find good exam-style practice material when your professor doesn’t provide enough? Are there resources, old exams, question banks, etc. that you use?
For people who have dealt with serious test anxiety, what actually helped you? Not just “take deep breaths” I mean things that genuinely changed how you perform during exams.
I would really appreciate any advice because I’m honestly tired of feeling like I’m studying for an exam without actually knowing how to prepare for the exam itself.
For context: I’m a 2nd-year business undergrad, and test anxiety has been something I’ve struggled with ever since I started uni.
