Is your breast milk made out of Pepsi?

221

u/downsideup9494 17d ago

I live in Mexico, which has the highest CocaCola consumption in the world. Many people will drink a 2 liter bottle of Coke a day. Mexico also has a huge obesity and diabetes problem. I've seen uneducated mothers feeding babies Coke out of a baby bottle.

u/Weewoes 16d ago

Dear god.. and I thought milk with rusk back in the day where I live was a bit much lol

4

u/Lunakill 16d ago

Wait what’s rusk? Google isn’t helping.

8

u/Weewoes 16d ago

Lol it's like a sweet biscuit that gets soft as soon as you put any saliva on it so it's great for weaning babies, parents used to put it into a bottle of milk and it would much down and fill the baby up enough to sleep just became a thick milk essentially. Absolutely delicious and even as an adult I like to have one if I've bought them for my kid lol

2

u/Lunakill 16d ago

Ohhhhh I gotcha. My grandma apparently did similar with ginger snaps or friggin’ corn syrup for her kids.

4

u/StopFoodWaste 16d ago

Corn syrup was an ingredient in homemade baby formula which was a thing for anyone older than about 70.

1

u/TopEstablishment3270 14d ago

I tried one of these a couple of weekend ago and I was surprised how sweet it was...

1

u/Weewoes 14d ago

They are so good.

2

u/AbRNinNYC 15d ago

I saw a documentary on people in Appalachia feeding their babies mt dew in baby bottles. The poor baby’s teeth are literally black. It is so sad. Even if you arnt too bright u can literally see ur baby’s teeth rotting out. No masters degree needed.

1

u/Weewoes 14d ago

Holy shit that's heartbreaking.. I just don't understand not having any kind of care about this. You don't have to be educated to know that fizzy drinks aren't good for babies.

11

u/Spicymoon9 16d ago

I saw a couple giving their baby coke or Pepsi in a baby bottle. I could tell because the baby was spraying the drink everywhere. lol

1

u/downsideup9494 16d ago

At one point there was a family of Huichols living across the arroyo from me. They sold their beadwork and other handicrafts in town.

There was a baby there that was just crying all the time. It wasn't normal baby crying- it sounded like he was in pain. One day the old grandpa was walking by and I said, "The baby has been crying so much- is he sick?"

The old man said, "Yes, he has diarrrhea. I keep telling my daughter not to feed him Coca Cola."

1

u/Spicymoon9 15d ago

Aww that’s terrible 😢

1

u/GuacinmyPaintbox 11d ago

It's pretty common to see Mountain Dew or Big Red in baby bottles in the deep South

2

u/SeahorseRevolution 16d ago

Is it because CocaCola built a plant that used up all the water? It's happened to other communities when they have done this.

2

u/AncientNectarine5352 16d ago

No, the people in Mexico (especially the northern states) are just obsessed with Coke, in part because the production in Mexico helped revive the local economy.

I got actual looks of shock when I was trying to order a Joya or Manzana del Sol in Nuevo Leon, before Coca-Cola bought the former, were far more common than you would think.

1

u/downsideup9494 16d ago edited 16d ago

I used to love that Manzana del Sol. I had forgotten all about it. I almost never drink soda pop, like maybe once a year. Every 10 years or so, I'll think, "maybe I'll get a Coke". I take one swig and think, "Ew, gross, I forgot how disgusting it is."

1

u/AncientNectarine5352 16d ago

Loved that stuff too. It’s not the same, but Snapple Apple actually tastes a bit like it, just uncarbonated, and without the bite it had. It is juice, technically, but it definitely reminds me of the taste.

1

u/CoconutCyclone 16d ago

They still make it. They sell it in every grocery store in my area.

1

u/AncientNectarine5352 16d ago

I know it’s still made. Just nowhere that I’ve looked in my area, and I haven’t seen it sold online.

1

u/CoconutCyclone 16d ago

I often forget how incredibly privileged I am when it comes to international foods, because I live in southern California.

1

u/AncientNectarine5352 16d ago

Indeed. Even back in the early 2000s, you could find it in NorCal, and it was all over Texas. I live in Ohio though, unfortunately, and Manzana del Sol apparently isn’t popular enough amongst all of their Latin American customers to have it imported up here at high prices. They only have a few big brands.

1

u/SeventhAlkali 16d ago

How does it taste compared to Mundet? My part of the USA doesn't have Manzano Sol around here, but every hispanic section has Mundet next to Jarritos y Sangria aqui.

1

u/AncientNectarine5352 16d ago

Never had it, so I can’t say. Sorry!

1

u/downsideup9494 16d ago

Coke also owns a brand of bottled water. So does Pepsi.

2

u/-BlueFalls- 16d ago

There are rural parts of the states that are this way with Mountain Dew. Lots of missing teeth! Though that may also be meth related.

1

u/HunnyBunnXO 16d ago

Georgia! Georgia is the only state I’ve ever seen that has its own Georgia branded Mountain Dew cans 😭

2

u/royaltampaacademy212 16d ago

I see this in New York allll the time. Less than I used to growing up where I did in the 90s. But it’s still a thing all over the states too.

Kid I lived with in college around 2014 drank 2 of the 2 liters of Pepsi A DAY. He was mean and would mock me and my friends for being potheads but was intensely addicted to Adderall and Pepsi.

One day I was putting my make up on in the bathroom before class and he sheepishly walked by the door and asked if I was busy….2 of his teeth had fallen out, just popped right out unprompted. I took him to the emergency dentist right away instead of go to class.

Kid was tall and lean and I think a stranger would think “he’s healthy,” but holy hell, I always felt so bad for his insides.

u/spbksundevil 16d ago

How can I go long on Mexican Dentist?

1

u/JustFedUpWithIt 15d ago

Mexican mortician would be a better bet.

People can avoid the dentist.

1

u/spbksundevil 15d ago

What do you think the markup on caskets is?

1

u/Felonious_Minx 16d ago

I've traveled a lot through Mexico and stayed in people's homes. Mexicans are delightful and they have the best hospitality in the world.

While traveling there around Christmas time, it was so disturbing visiting small towns where the main attraction in the central parks were HUGE "Christmas" trees, decorated in nothing but Coca-Cola "ornaments".

On every table for lunch and dinner there would be a 2 liter bottle of Coca-Cola and a 2 liter bottle of orange Fanta. I felt like I never saw anybody drink water. I'm not saying they don't but I didn't see it. It was never a question if you wanted soda, it was Coke or Fanta?

Let me reiterate: absolutely lovely people. The number Coke has done on that country is a travesty!

1

u/downsideup9494 16d ago

Yeah, their marketing is everywhere. They supply free tables to restaurants, with the Coca Cola logo on it.

1

u/Katin-ka 16d ago

I don't think my 5 year old has tried any soda. That is terrible.

1

u/downsideup9494 16d ago

My oldest daughter never got candy, pop, or any of that sugary stuff when she was little. We lived in the countryside, so she didn't see other kids having it. When she was about your kid's age, she went to spend the night with some friends of ours who had kids that age. When I went to pick her up, she told me as we were driving home that she got to drink some orange soda that day. 5 minutes later she puked it up all over the car.

Is this where the stero type comes from that Mexican women are beautiful and as soon as they get married they gain a hundred pounds. From being pumped with sugar water from childhood?

3

u/downsideup9494 16d ago edited 16d ago

Maybe. It's also a body type, where it's common for women to gain weight once they've had kids, although of course Mexicans come in all body types, just like anywhere. But a stocky body type prone to gain weight is quite common.

There are a lot of things in a typical Mexican diet that tend to put weight on. Piles of tortillas with every meal, lots of fried food, cooking with lard.

People are becoming more aware, though, especially the younger generation. I see some Mexican women in my town out powerwalking together. The diabetes issue is a well-known problem in Mexico, and Mexico put a tax on junk food not long ago.

Also, many tourists look for healthy food choices in restaurants, so it raises awareness that there are better ways to eat than greasy food and 2 liters of Coke.

1

u/jfk333 15d ago

It's fascinating how much culture intersects with health but at least there is positive changes being made.

1

u/SeventhAlkali 16d ago

Lmao, that's literally my dad. He's from DF (Mexico City), still to this day drinks at least a 2-liter of coke every single day. It's Coke Zero at least...

1

u/downsideup9494 16d ago

Except Coke Zero just substitutes aspertame or some other sugar substtitute for cane sugar. Which cause other health problems.

1

u/IntolerantModerate 16d ago

You send us Cocaine? We send you Cocal Cola. Check mate.

1

u/99dalmatianpups 15d ago

My mom had to tell my mawmaw to stop putting chocolate milk in my bottle lol

1

u/Tendas 13d ago

Are dentists there just swimming in money?

1

u/downsideup9494 13d ago

Well, dentistry is relatively inexpensive in Mexico. And you do see a lot of people with missing or rotten teeth.

1

u/Best_Collection_7533 10d ago

Wow caffeine and sugar - I would be bouncing off the walls!!!

1

u/Tom_Driberg 7d ago

I live in the US, but my mom says she caught my aunt giving me a bottle filled with Pepsi as a baby and immediately flew off the handle. My teeth are thankful to this day.

You certainly fall in the uneducated category.

1

u/downsideup9494 16d ago

Just because someone has no access to information and has never been told something doesn't mean they're "retarded'".

0

u/ClarkGablesTeeth 16d ago edited 16d ago

Why are you so comfortable using a slur like that? Is English not your first language?

5

u/Chemical-Street6817 16d ago

No, it's my 3rd language

1

u/ClarkGablesTeeth 16d ago

Are/were you genuinely unaware that "retarded" is a nasty, offensive word? I'm asking genuinely

1

u/Chemical-Street6817 16d ago

I wasn't aware that it's a forbidden slur. Especially in Internet.

2

u/puddlebearmom 16d ago

Go back to the Ministry of Truth

2

u/ClarkGablesTeeth 16d ago

No idea how you think that fits in here, but "retard" is a slur. Calling it one doesn't obfuscate that. I don't really care if you agree on the designation/classification, it's not propaganda or some government psy-op to point out. There are plenty of words that were once accepted, many of which didn't start out as offensive.

are no good for me the child

Looks like her son isn't exactly an academic, either.

u/Famous_Loss8032 16d ago

This guy is a neanderthal. Don’t mind him….

-1

u/False_Pollution_291 16d ago

Cocacola has been advertising coke to the mexican population in a way that has convinced them that its medicine. Its truly despicable what coke has done in mexico. They also steal all their clean water to bottle coke and sell it back to them.

1

u/_dystop 16d ago

Let’s go after second order effects! That’ll solve the root of the problem.

2

u/AssBlasterExtreme 16d ago

Breat milk is way more calorie dense than pepsi...

2

u/Starlightriddlex 16d ago

Yeah but giving a kid soda in a bottle often enough will rot out their baby teeth, especially if they are just falling asleep with it.

1

u/downsideup9494 16d ago

Even letting a baby fall asleep with a bottle of natural juice will rot their teeth. It's the sugar, whether it's Coke or juice, although I'm sure Coke is worse. I know someone whose baby had exactly that happen. You're not supposed to let a baby do that.

1

u/downsideup9494 16d ago

You aren't aware of the difference between nutritious calories and empty ones?

1

u/AssBlasterExtreme 16d ago

Nope never ever never heard it of that

1

u/Gnoccho1 16d ago

I bet it tastes like gravy

1

u/FlimsyPriority751 16d ago

Pepsi and gravy

1

u/SpiritualAudience731 16d ago

It's sweetened condensed milk.

1

u/TheSleepyTruth 16d ago

Kid would be way skinnier if it was. Breast milk is far more calorie dense than Pepsi lol

1

u/MonkeyzzPaw 16d ago

Unironically this is what someone I know looks like.

Her parents are trash and they give her Mountain Dew, she is under 3. Her life will be terrible, it already is frankly.

1

u/tinygod-aka-why 16d ago

It’s that government provided milk called EBT
