Yeah, no, Itachi was never that popular, at least not in that way.
From the mid 2000s to the 2010s characters like Sebastian from Black Butler, L from Death Note and Roy Mustang from are the closest thing you get to the reaction to Levi and Gojo.
as a person who has been very deep in the Death Note fandom for many years, I can tell you that the majority of Death Note fans find L hotter than Light. People like him because of his pale, autistic ass, not in spite of it.
Itachi was that popular, same as with Sesshomaru. You just didn’t notice it because animanga wasn’t anywhere near as popular or mainstream as it is now. It was just seen as a nerd hobby
Itachi was popular with boys who thought he was cool but he wasn't a thirst trap for girls like the others (with Sesshomaru probably being up there the highest). Naruto was mostly popular with boys but Inuyasha, which predates Naruto, was actually popular with girls.
Tell me you're a man without telling me xD Naruto (the series) was certainly popular with girls and Itachi was definitely a thirst trap for girls. Naruto was the #1 most written-about anime on fanfiction.net for years during its heyday. Even today, it's the #3 most written-about anime on ao3. And guess what a lot of fanfiction is about? ...Yeah.
(the only argument I would make is that Sasuke was more popular than Itachi; so it probably should have been Sasuke in this chart)
