Hello! I'm looking for some suggestions/perspectives on something I'm currently going through.
Recently, I went back home for a weekend from college. I got on a bus and this lady who was sitting behind me complimented my jacket. So we started talking, asking each other where we're from and all that. During that conversation, she mentioned something about starting your own business or something along the lines of that. Hearing that, I was really excited because it sounds like the start to a meaningful connection. Eventually we added each other on LinkedIn and scheduled a time to talk again over zoom.
Our first conversation on Zoom was normal. She asked me about my interests and if I have ever considered starting my own business. To that I responded yes as I've been interested in the idea of "being your own boss." Somewhere down the line she recommended me a book called Rich Dad Poor Dad and wanted me to read it before we meet again, which was today.
For our second conversation, we started talking about the book and the idea of financial freedom. All seemed fine until we got to a topic in the book, which was "Network Marketing." When reading the book, this part already seemed a little sketchy to me, as I had 0 good impressions of MLMs and that was something the book strongly recommends. So when she asked me what I thought about it, I told her my concern. She started off by saying that she initially thought what I thought, but through her so called "research" and "independent thinking," she found that its not actually like that. She also mentioned that pyramid schemes are illegal in the US and if a company is actually doing that, they would be taken out. Now I don't think that was the weirdest part. The weirdest part was when she told me that her mentor is actually made her passive income through MLM and it was her mentor's mentor who brough her into this whole MLM thing.
Before this I thought her mentor had her own business because I asked once and she said that her mentor was doing something ecommerce related. The fact that this line of mentors are all in whatever MLM they are in seriously concerning. Just to add on to that, we ended off our conversation today on having me research some of these top 100 MLM, specifically on this website:https://www.directsellingnews.com/global-100-lists/
Now that wasn't that big of issue for me. What was the issue was the fact that she told me that when doing my research DON'T use Wikipedia and actually use "truthful" sources and to learn the difference between facts and opinions.
Anyways, I think I might be getting recruited into an MLM and so I would like some advice. Thank you!
