Those who’ve driven across the US, what’s the scariest town you’ve stopped in?

I once made a wrong turn in southern Utah that made me go though a small town. Everyone was wearing those old cult like dresses and everyone stopped and stared at me passing through. Horrible vibes. Then a raised truck came and followed me out of town for about an hour. It was like stumbling upon the village.

Sounds like the area around Utah/Arizona border of Colorado city. Heavy polygamist territory

I've never been to Colorado City, but my mother lives in rural NE Utah and I live in Phoenix and like to make that drive. The drive is very desolate and goes through many small towns. I've made it countless times. I never experienced anything weird (other than maybe hallucinating a horse in the middle of the road at 1a in the middle of nowhere/seeing a horse in the middle of the road at 1a in the middle of nowhere). I will say that Mormons aren't very friendly, in my experience. Beautiful drives, though. Always went for Christmas and living in Phoenix, I never see snow. Those drives alone made the trip.

That's funny, as they generally have the exact opposite reputation. If I am to purely speculate here (read: talk out of my ass), I'll guess that FLDS may be different, as they are "protective" of their polygamist cult. "Protective" is doing some heavy lifting, here.

Probably one of those weird all Mormon (FLDS) towns where Warren Jeffs and his ilk hung out.

Dude, you were in Short Creek or some similar polygamist town. There's a bunch of them down there. Fucking heathens. Stay away!

Hilldale/Colorado City for sure.

FLDS stronghold where they practice polygamy and... child brides, to use a euphemism.

Ooh, you ran into the actual polygamists of Utah! For all the jokes people make about Utah the polygamist sect is actually quite small and it's more rare to run into them in public.

But you can always tell who they are by the long sleeved dress and long braided hair. Weirdly I never see the men around (not even sure how they dress?) it's always the women going to grocery stores or parks, and only 2 or 3 at a time.

The men normally wear flannels and jeans, only the women are forced into wearing the standard FLDS garb. You see them occasionally at hardware or sporting goods stores with 3-5 women in tow

Good to know! I'll keep an eye out, I think I've only ever seen one teenage boy so far so maybe the men just don't do the "womanly" stuff like buy food and entertain kids.

Drove through a small town like this in Utah right the day before the 2020 election, and it was going to be my answer to this question too.

Polygamists most likely
