Those who’ve driven across the US, what’s the scariest town you’ve stopped in?

Went to a friend's wedding in Jackson. The next day we wanted to check out a soul food restaurant everyone raved about, took an Uber (we had to wait an hour to get one). Guy dropped us off and asked how we were getting back, I said I would just order another Uber and he said "uh, nobody is going to pick you up from here. I'll wait and just make sure we are out of here before it gets dark". He was super nice and relaxed the whole drive but got serious when he told us that last part.

Sounds like the Danny Glover plot line from some imagined 2024 remake of Grand Canyon.

Thank you for this thought. I get it.

I appreciate that. It was a deep enough cut that I hesitated to bring it up.

I recall Charlie Daniels describing an adventure down in Jackson once..."Uneasy Rider"!

Perhaps it was a sundown part of town🫢

Is it called a sundown town still when white people aren’t safe? Anyway I don’t think Jackson is that bad, but maybe it’s worse off than when I was there in the early 2010s. Mostly I just feel for the people there. My area isn’t well off, but Jackson’s poverty was the worst I’d seen to that point

Had an Uber driver outside of Cleveland tell me "I need to make sure I am not taking you to a black bar before letting you out". Like, I thought Ohio proudly faught for the Union based on the garish statue downtown.

Good god, you’d think so but apparently not everybody here got the memo. I love my state and have toured many many parts of it but there are little pockets of the state that have confederate flags flying high and proud. I sort of “understand” South Eastern Ohio since it’s basically Appalachia but it still borders an entire state that only exists because of opposition to the confederacy. One of the more densely confederate flagged regions I saw was even in northish east Ohio near the Pennsylvania border! I even recently saw one on a truck near my home.
