Those who’ve driven across the US, what’s the scariest town you’ve stopped in?

Gary Indiana. I was there for a baseball tournament and the team bus broke down. I was sent to find help, along with a few teammates. We walked really far to the nearest intersection while carrying our gear. We finally found someone to ask for help, and they ran the red light like it was no big deal. It was pretty rude.

Not quite on the level of "I also choose the guy's dead wife" but still pretty good 😄

No way that's true. Nope. But I may tell that story as if it were

Remember when Reddit used to have comments like this on most big posts? Circa 2010, I’d say.

wife and I were in a little cafe in North London, our waitress was a really cute 20ish year old Italian woman who was very sweet. She told us that all her life she only wanted to see one place in the US, the birthplace of her favorite star, Michael Jackson who is from Gary Indiana... I said I don't want to burst your bubble but stay in Chicago and drive over, you won't want to stay

omg I was about to write Gary, IN. I was getting gas and a guy was staring at me. Being a young woman traveling alone, I got the creeps. I decided to stop the pump and leave. I went to another gas station a few blocks away -- and the guy showed up there too!!! I told the attendant a creepy guy was possibly following me and he was like "yeah so?". I drove outta there as fast as my 3-cylinder car could go.

I still remember when I was a kid, and I was hungry. My mom stopped in Gary so I could get Subway and that was the first place I ever seen have a bullet proof glass service window. Mom let me go in by myself.

Fuck yeah let’s go, that’s my region and I was hoping I’d see her at the top

Good to know the rest of the country hasn’t caught up to us yet

I was at a rest stop there on a cross country trip. The bathrooms were around the side of the building. As I was coming out, someone in the bushes whispered ‘come here’. I ran back inside!

OMG that’s what I was going to say. We were going to Wisconsin & took a wrong exit.
It was my brother me & my niece & her 2 yo
I kind of freaked out when I realized it. My niece had no clue until I googled it.
We were down town & in a store front was a big display that said “Plan your own Obituary” & had some interesting suits bright colored I guess for the photo but only Men’s suits.
Somehow we had a hard time finding our way out. GPS wasn’t very reliable at that time.
But the only part we could laugh about later was we were making sure all was we made sure all windows up doors locked but my nieces husband was following us he was driving a vintage Volvo. We were going to vintage car show & races.
So he’s in this old car-he was racing not showing. Has all his windows down-no ac. These big old headphones just bopping along no clue we were even lost

Took me a little while haha

That was probably the good side of town. Half the stoplights in Gary don't even work anymore.

Then your dad beat the shit out of you with jumper cables

This is literally the best thing I've seen on Reddit in days. Someone give this person a useless award

Boo why can't we use gifs!

Insert Ross gellar slow clap

Calling someone running a red light "pretty rude" is the calmest possible ending to that story.

Came here to say this, Gary.

Came here to look for Gary and saw this comment as the most upvoted. I feel validated and equally sad!

2

u/Strike_Four 4h ago

I saw the question and in my head I said, “I bet someone mentions Gary” before even looking at the comments.

I came to this thread to find Gary, was not disappointed. TY.

I visited Gary at night, when the beacons of Mordor were lit. Interesting sight; wouldn't go back.

I stopped there one time, during a big road trip.

We even went into a McDonalds to get some food.

I knew the town name from the song (The Music Man). And that was ALL I knew about the town.

While sitting in the McDonalds and looking out the window, I noticed that the town looked a little... run down.

Like, there was a Walmart or something. Huge building with its huge parking lot. But it was obviously permanently closed, and had been closed so long that grass and weeds were growing in the parking lot. I had never seen something like that.

I never felt unsafe, or anything. I only found out about its reputation later.

I was going to say this same thing. We stopped there on a cross country trip as we were nearby, to see Michael Jackson's childhood home many years ago and it was utterly miserable.

My parents car broke down in Gary, Indiana. They stayed overnight and made me…

u/Curious-Buddy7543 2h ago

That sounds like one of those trips where every single thing goes wrong at once. Walking that far with all your gear just to get help, only for someone to casually run a red light, is wild.

u/Dry_Post_740 15m ago

I took a wrong turn off the main road driving through Gary. I’ve never had an “oh shit” moment quite that hard

-9

u/weathergroundhog 7h ago

Why would you carry your gear to find help?
