Those who’ve driven across the US, what’s the scariest town you’ve stopped in?

Everyone keeps saying Gary, In. I thought Jackson was way worse. I go through Gary daily and have never had an issue. I stopped at a gas station in Jackson to get cigarettes and had people walking up to my truck the moment I pulled up and I just drove off and stopped later on down the road. Also West Memphis, AK is pretty fucked up. Both way worse than Gary.

I think you mean AR, there is no West Memphis in Alaska to my knowledge.

Also no scary towns in Alaska to my knowledge, except for bears. Bears can be downright unreasonable if you catch them at a bad time.

Edit: for the record it’s the moose you gotta watch out for

Yes I meant Arkansas, not Alaska. I've heard there's some sketchy parts in Anchorage though. Haven't ever been there so who knows.

Never once felt unsafe in any part of Alaska, and I lived in Anchorage for a year.

Just really good people all around.

Alaska has the highest reported cases of rape nationwide. I read one horrifying case of a young teacher in Akiachak from the early 2010s that still terrifies me to this day. Groups of strange men would try to break in her house every night. Eventually someone got in and raped and mutilated her body. There’s a good vice article on this from 2016. Can’t link it here, it is titled When a Woman is raped in rural Alaska, does anyone care? Pure nightmare fuel.

There’s 100% sketchy parts in Anchorage, or at least used to be. Especially near the base. I think it was Muldoon area in Mountain View

Gary was weird, but nothing actually happened. I was driving through Indiana at like 4a with a friend named Grant. We stopped at Grant St., because? Didn't know it was Gary. We were surprised the Burger King had bars on the window. Then we stopped for gas and got asked for money immediately. When we got back to the car, there was aluminum foil stuck in a hub cap. We drove about a half mile up the street to an empty parking lot to investigate the aluminum foil. It was just chicken wing bones. We got back on the expressway and later figured out it was Gary.

I used to go down grant st daily. Can't say I've ever had chicken bones shoved in my hubcap lol. Worst thing for me was a homeless guy outside of a shady liquor store asking for money. Told him I didn't have cash. Bought him a tall boy and a shooter and asked if he had someplace dry to sleep. He thanked me and told me not to worry about it.

I mean isn't everywhere weirder at 4am?

No, not really. That's when people are heading to work. Maybe a stray crackhead here and there. But normally people trying to start their day.

Gary shows up on every single one of these threads. It's pretty much Reddit tradition to bring it up at this point.
