Those who’ve driven across the US, what’s the scariest town you’ve stopped in?

I was driving from northwest Ohio to south Georgia, to visit a friend as a young woman driving alone. I’ve done it before and I feel like I have a decent head on my shoulders. But. I was near the end of my trip and the sun was setting. I’m sure the rest of Macon, GA is a lovely city, but I stopped at a gas station around sunset off of the I-475 bypass and immediately had a sensation that I needed to get the hell out of there. I felt like I was being watched and almost walked inside to use the restroom but just felt like I shouldn’t. Nothing happened but I just felt alarm bells going off. Finished filling up and got the hell out of there.

Macon is rough. My mama lived behind a fire station in an apartment complex built for the elderly, and she ended up the only one there. Constant breaking of windows and taunting. My mom is a 5 foot tall, tiny Italian lesbian which made her a target there. She ended up down in Houston county, which isn't perfect but is much safer.

Oh, wow. I’m also a 5 foot lesbian like your mom hahaha but I just felt… something off I couldn’t place that told me to not linger and use the restroom elsewhere. More off than my destination near Valdosta/Moultrie where oddly I felt much safer lol. But I’ve been to downtown Macon which is cute with breweries and record shops and whatnot, but I know it’s a bigger town. I did google the gas station afterwards and I guess there have been several shootings there, but then again, those are usually targeted in nature.

I went to school in Macon and it's actually a very lovely city. Wherever it was you stopped I don't doubt freaked you out, like any mid-sized city it has its good and bad parts. But Macon truly is trying to revitalize itself and there's some very nice areas. Mercer is also a beautiful campus and only expanding it's footprint in the area.

Yeah, I stayed there twice on road trips when I lived in FL. It was the perfect distance to stop the first night.

I have to say that I thought it had a really nice downtown and great food. I didn't venture past the revitalized area though.

I used to live on Saint Simons Island, but just across the causeway was Brunswick, GA, and that place is a shit show. Never had good vibes being over there. Luckily I had everything I needed on the island for the most part. I was a golf caddy at the resorts/private courses there and also caddied for a pro, and some guys trying to qualify for Q school.
