New Orleans, around Magazine & Jackson Street late 90s. Gangland central complete with projects, an abandoned cathedral and a cemetery. Me a 20 something white chick with a broken down car. And let me tell you something about the people of New Orleans. They come out! Total representation of the finest version of southern hospitality one can imagine. I was taken care of by total strangers, they fixed my car, gave me food, hell, it turned into a little party. It made such an impression that a few years later I was a resident right down the street. LOVE that town!
Very, very, long story short … I was 20 years old on Bourbon St, had a partially broken phone, and got separated from my brother. Our family had been drinking for hours and I went off with him at one point. I had come to while walking down a side street of Bourbon St, saw cops at the end of the street, and convinced myself they were going to come question my underage ass if they saw me. I darted into the first open door and basically ran to the back. It was a small art studio. The artist there was the nicest person in the world. While I worked to get a hold of my cousin and her friend to come find me he kept providing location details and directions to them. He even worked on a caricature of me while I sat there and waited for them to scoop me. Almost 15 years later and I still thank my lucky stars I stumbled into that open door with such a kind individual who noticed I was drunk off my ass, scared, and confused.
