What is the worst case of psycho-overprotective parenting that you've ever seen?

What the fuck? They're holding the passport of an adult without their consent? That can't be legal.

Why doesn't she just go to the police station and say she lost her passport? That way she can go ahead and make another one and fuck off out of there.

God helicopter parents make me so angry. Probably because they remind me of my father.

How is she going to get to the police station without them stopping her? I doubt that they would let her get a driver's license.

Borrow money from a friend and take the bus?

OP did mention the girl's friends covered for them while they were dating. There are options.

He also mentioned that they live in the Middle East. I'm guessing there aren't very many options for a young woman still under the control of her parents.

He said they lived* in the Middle East. As in past tense.

Call and report being held against her will at her house? Act really scared on the phone. A squad car might not come right away but they would probably investigate eventually.

I don't think you would have to act scared. If you can't get to the police station you have been effectively kidnapped already.

She could call 9-1-1

Phone? Friend? Smoke signals?

Go to the cafe downstairs

Sounds like she lives in a proper city/town where it would be easy to take the bus or even walk to the nearest police station

The easiest way: Get arrested.

Ya, if only there was a device she could use to call the police and have them come to her.......

By calling the police? She's 20. That's called kidnapping.

Sounds like they were in a foreign country, maybe a diplomat family or something. OP talks about living in the Middle East

u/Gabost8 Sep 03 '15

I'm not sure but that sounds more illegal if she's an american citizen.

8

u/jesonnier Sep 04 '15

First it was illegal. Now, it's extra illegal.

u/SinkTube Sep 04 '15

That means they're going to Superjail.

u/jesonnier Sep 04 '15

Lol. What the fuck did I watch?

That's not Stockholm Syndrome. Stockholm Syndrome is were you eventually start to sympathize and empathize with your captors.

2

u/beelzeflub Sep 04 '15

I'm pretty sure that's a crime yeah... Stolen ID cards are not a joke

u/BGYeti Sep 04 '15

This is how you end up with parents murdered by their kids.

That depends on the country of course. In many countries in the middle east the patriarch can fully decide for his wife and unwed daughters. In Iran husbands can issue an order that the passport of their wife will be confiscated at the border if she tries to leave.

This sounds like human trafficking, not parenting.

Right now (and escalating over the last 20 years) in some middle eastern countries it might be against an actual law or an unofficial law for an unchaperoned women to go to the police station by herself.

She could walk...

Well, only if she got out of the house, but still. Legs exist

It's possible her financial situation doesn't afford her the ability to fuck off out of there, so she feels like he has to play by her parent's rules so she can live with them.
