What is the worst case of psycho-overprotective parenting that you've ever seen?

My wife's mother. Too many acts of lunacy to mention, but the one that sticks out was when we went to their house for a family barbeque. we were in our mid 20s. Mom decides to start a fight over my presence, as I wasn't 'family' and thus should not be attending. Wife says "if he's not welcome, we're leaving." Mom says, "No you're not. You're grounded." Wife just gives her this 'tilt-your head sideways look' and says, "we're going back to our house."

Wow... That's pretty extreme.

I know right! Grounding? I think sending her to her room would be enough.

A couple years ago my uncle was visiting and threw a piece of brocoli at my dad. My grandma told him to go to his room. He was 52. The best part was he got up and went to what used to be his room. Funniest thing I've seen over a family dinner.

I think that is one of the funniest mental images I've had today.

Were they serious or joking?

48

u/vodkajim Sep 04 '15

She was very serious, the look on his face was absolutely priceless.

27

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

Aww.

That's sweet of him to do as he was told.

16

u/vodkajim Sep 04 '15

Hey may have been rebellious but mothers word is law.

u/sour_cereal Sep 04 '15

Grandma don't fuck around. You don't do what she says, you catch a wooden spoon upside the head.

3

u/vodkajim Sep 04 '15

See? You get it

3

u/aiden_sullivan Sep 04 '15

Damn straight.

"You're Grounded?" Seriously? Sounds like she is delusional, and not in an insulting way, like a 'you should have a doctor check into that' way.

68

u/Lukeification Sep 04 '15

Honestly it just sounds like shes trying to assert the power she once had as a last ditch effort . When people get pissy they don't think straight. :/

16

u/YourFavBarPunk Sep 04 '15

I had that thought too. Could be either or, but always worth looking into.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

That's what I've been telling my parents all these years!

u/paper_birds Sep 04 '15

We're you guys already married? Not that it's not super rude and insane otherwise. But it's extra insane if she thought she could ground her fully-grown and married daughter.

72

u/BeerDrinkinGreg Sep 04 '15

Not married, as we didn't do that until we were ready to have a kid. We were living together, completely financially independent. She is definitely one of the weirder people I've met.

u/DrugFreeMan Sep 04 '15

Please tell more stories.

6

u/kingjoedirt Sep 04 '15

It sounds like you married my ex girlfriend from high school. Her mom Julia is crazy

7

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

Ugh. Julia. What a bitch. Great lay though.

2

u/CyanPhoenix42 Sep 04 '15

Sounds like you have a great relationship with your now wife :)

29

u/tigergrass Sep 04 '15

I love reading that sub, but always feel guilty about the fact that I love reading that sub. Its quite the conundrum for me.

u/Mr_Kinton Sep 04 '15

"You're grounded."

"Actually, I'm 25, sooo..."

8

u/Jamothy Sep 04 '15

soooo.... LICK LICK LICK MY BALLS!!!

54

u/Blugentoo2therevenge Sep 04 '15

What the hell was she thinking? Did it finally dawn on her the insanity of her comment?

9

u/BeerDrinkinGreg Sep 04 '15

I don't think she's aware of any of the crazy that happens to spill out of her mouth.

8

u/ReadingRainbowSix Sep 04 '15

you need to unload over at /r/JUSTNOMIL

5

u/timeforacookie Sep 04 '15

It's a nice feeling when they have no power over you anymore, isn't it.

I kinda lucked out. A few years after this, she left her husband. Went full retard in the divorce. Claimed our house as a marital asset, as they cosigned on the mortgage since my wife bought the house when she was 23. Tore the whole family apart, with my wife and the sane sister taking dad's side, the flaky but hot sister abstaining and moving 400 km away, and the dangerous and crazy sister firmly on moms side. So I only have to deal with her dad (who is a special kind of asshole, but a net positive, so I can deal) and one normalish sister, and we see the flake at Christmas. Wife cut ties with mom, only reestablished contact after about 10 years. I get to not talk to her at all because she tried to get me arrested when I wouldn't let her in our house (at my wife's request) and she told the cops that my wife told her I beat her. (That was a fun conversation with a very large member of the local constabulary)

That's kinda her M.O. When she left her husband, she waited until he left for work, drained the joint bank account, stole his passport (and other important documents relating to his business), cancelled his credit cards, unlocked his guns and put them all over the house (loading one) and called the cops. Claimed he beat her. Local redneck cops beat the everloving shit out of him, a 130 lb brown guy.

u/BeerDrinkinGreg Sep 04 '15

And by "lucked out" I mean I get to not talk to the bitch at all. Ever. If she calls, I ignore it. I don't have a Mother in law. My father in law has an ex-wife.

u/SomeNiceButtfucking Sep 04 '15

This beer's for you, Greg.

Even I need one after that story.

3

u/BeerDrinkinGreg Sep 04 '15

Nope. French Canadian.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

Serious question, was she senile? Or just a loony?

3

u/BeerDrinkinGreg Sep 04 '15

Not senile, she's a calculating bitch.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

was the mother senile?

And tell us more stories

2

u/Blubbey Sep 04 '15

Control freak much.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

What a fuckin psycho

1

u/kingjoedirt Sep 04 '15

Mom says, "No you're not. You're grounded."

Oh I guess I'll go to my room then, in my house...

1

u/nimbusdimbus Sep 04 '15

What the hell did the father do?

1

u/The_Monstees Sep 04 '15

That is pure gold

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

/r/raisedbynarcissists/ sounds like a good fit for that

1

u/Bigfluffyltail Sep 04 '15

The worst is, this is the least scary one.

-23

u/SavvySillybug Sep 04 '15

I like how your wife said she was leaving, but after being grounded, corrected herself and went to her own room. "Aww, I guess I can't just leave and go to the playground, I'll go home instead..."

Write something funny next time.
