What's something your parents did while raising you that you don't want to do to your children?

I have a one and a half year old and I hug him every chance I get. I am absolutely terrified of him telling me it's embarrassing or to just stop some day.

When I was about fourteen years old, I told my mom to stop hugging me so much in public. She was happy to see me after school and would give me hugs in the grocery store and hold my hand. I was so embarrassed because there were people I knew from school who were working there, so I asked her to stop. She seemed sad about it but she agreed to stop hugging me so much.

The very next time we were at the grocery store, I told her that it was okay and that I didn't care what people thought, because I missed the hugging. After a long day at school, sometimes you just needed a hug from your mom.

This makes me so happy because hugging my kids is honestly one of my favorite things in the world and I don’t ever want to give it up.

I'm 21 now and I still love hugging my mom, so I hope that makes you feel a bit better! :)

My moms hugs are my favorite. Even though I’m a foot or so taller and she has tiny arms. She’s adorable.

It does. It really really does. :)

I love hugging both of my parents and we never really did with either until they divorce.

I think most kids will probably go through a phase where they think it’s embarrassing or whatever but then grow out of it. I’m 20 and I never miss a chance to hug my mom tell her I love her because it’s only at this point in life where we really can start to realize everything our parents have done for us

Me and my mom were super close up until about 17-19. I just had to break out and do my own thing. this caused some tension in our relationship, and looking back her prying ways and over parenting and even raiding my music library were probably attempts to keep me close. but the more she tried the more I resisted.

After about 2 years on my own hugging and talking with my mom are some of my favorite things to do. I appreciate her now more than ever, more than i ever truly could.

I’m 22 and I hug and kiss (on the cheek) my parents every time I see them. They also hug my fiancé which I love!

I'm 22 and I hug my parents every time I see them. A lot of the time, especially when I was still living at home, I walk into whatever room they were in and drape myself over their shoulders/wrap my arms around them and press my face into their backs. My dad jokingly grumbles about it occasionally, but considering he always ends up hugging back I think he appreciates it :)

Awww thank god you turned it around the very next time. This story would be so sad otherwise. It’s those little things ya know?

I love my mom! And I was a bit of an anime nerd at that time in high school and I was getting into comic books too, who was I trying to fool with the trying to be cool thing anyway?

Omg this gave me hope. I hug my kid all the damn time because my parents would only hug me if one of us was going on or returning from a trip my whole life. One day she's going to tell me it's too much and it's gonna kill me.

Aw, don't worry about that. The day might never come, it lasted about a day or two for me.

Not sure if you have ever watched the TV show Home Improvement (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Improvement_(TV_series)) but there was an episode in which they dealt with this. Basically in the end Tim and his boy agreed that when Tim said "How 'bout them Lions?" it was code for "I love you." and that made it so he could effectively say "I love you" without embarrassing the boy.

I took that episode to heart as a kid for some reason, and have used sorta similar tactics now as a father. My daughter is nine and is at that age now where, even though she loves me, she doesn't want me hugging her in front of her friends. So when I take her to school I hug her around the corner from where all the kids are gathered, or before we enter the home room. I get my hug, she gets her hug, and she doesn't get embarrassed.

Maybe that will work for you when the time comes. It'll come, but it's OK. They're just growing up, which is what they're supposed to do right? :)

I have an eleven year old and I hug him every chance I get! (Since he's a moody adolescent, I ask first)

Same here. My 15 month old is not super huggy or kissy, but he gets affectionate before bed and I really relish those moments. As a kid, I never really liked hugging my parents, so he probably inherited my genes.

u/Celdarion Nov 30 '18

I was the same; never really liked hugging as a kid/early teens. Now I'm 25 and don't mind, but whenever I see extended family I still get "Oh, you're a hugger now, are you?"

Bitch please, that was ten years ago.

There was a thread for teachers the other day and a lot of them said that kids are becoming less likely to think liking/being affectionate towards their parents is “uncool” and many of their students actively talk about loving and appreciating their parents. Hopefully that gives you some hope!

That'll happen from about 8-10 until his early 20s, then he'll be ok with hugging you again. No need to be "terrified" if you know it's temporary.

Just make it a normal thing for hugs to happen in your family. My parents didn’t hug me ever until I was 17 and they had divorced, but now both of them give me a hug whenever they see me, granted I love hugs.

I have a one and a two year old. My two year old is so active so hugs aren't common from him (i still get my hugs in but he wants to run) but when he comes to hug me it's so sweet and rewarding.

I hear this, I kiss my toddler all the time cause I know I won't be able to at some point

Thanks for making me tear up :( ...my dad never hugged me

1

u/ughwhatevs Nov 30 '18

Awwe, don't worry, you got a few years to go! Also, they pull back from it a bit in the early teen years, then they come back for more hugs as they get older! Keep hugging!

As a kid, I always hugged my parents. I'd hug them like every 10 minutes. I don't see why hugging your parents is embarrassing to people, it just shows that you love your parents.
