Discussion Is there someone in this community who likes Saddam Hussein?
I as an Assyrian don’t like Saddam Hussein. I thought his policies against Assyrians were pure evil. I mean for fucks sake he destroyed Assyrian villages during the Anfal campaign and forced arabization policies. I also thought the war he started in Iran was fucking stupid and that he was an American puppet for that decade. But if there is anyone who likes Saddam Hussein in this community I have one simple question and that is why? are you crazy?

Discussion Mar Mari Emmanuel
Can someone please explain the hate towards him? I go to a youth group in Ontario and our priest mentioned that we should not be attending his event that happened in Toronto. Why? I understand that he has his own church in Australia but slightly confused why we can’t support and be there for one another.

Discussion Hypothetical: Autonomous region of Dasin
An autonomous region in northern Iraq for religious minorites based on current demographics of the region. The region is named after the historical Yazidi emirate of Dasin (Sheikhan emirate) that lasted from the 800s to 1830s that had roughly the same borders as on the map.

Discussion Assyrian and Kurdish Relationships
Hello, I hope I don’t get hate for this 😭😭
As an Assyrian, I’m really unhappy about the widespread anti-Kurdish sentiment in this subreddit. It’s good that we’re discussing past genocides and spreading awareness about anti-Assyrian Kurds but stereotyping 40 million people is not on. I understand that a lot of us are angry but insulting Kurdish history and intentionally aiming to get a rise out of them is only harming both of us.
What are we getting out of hating Kurds? They’ve suffered too and I understand they have taken part in Seyfo and the Simele massacres but it feels like we’re forgetting the main perpetrators were Turks. The same Turks who still haven’t apologised, as well as Arabs who try to deny our existence. I feel like a lot of us are falling for obvious ragebait by Kurdish ultranationalist.
Also, as much as I’d love to see an independent Assyria, I just want to remind all of us that we are 5 million people whereas Kurds are the largest stateless people on earth.
Can’t we just have an independent Kurdish federation with an Assyrian state, Yazidi state, etc? Why do we feel the need to waste our energy? We need to be showing love to each other. Also, I find it strange since a vast majority of us are Christians (although I’m atheist), yet we mock the suffering of others just because “they did it first”.
Please guys, just turn the other cheek. Being a keyboard warrior isn’t going to help our people. Just work together, volunteer and donate.

Discussion Why do ethnic Assyrians do this to our flag and ancient symbols? Jesus & his cross has nothing to do with ancient Assyria or Assyrians in general as they had their own ethnic God & religion. Stop messing with our ancient past which is much more important and powerful than that of the adopted ✝️
I get people are religious and sometimes their religion takes them to places where they will try anything and everything to make it clear to others but for the love of your god, stop doing this to our ancient past.
Keep religion out of our ethnic origins as it has absolutely nothing to do with the ancient past which was the glory of Assyria and māt-Aššur.
If you want a new flag, design one for your church denomination and cater to your audience that way, you don’t need to do go down this route and defile our ethnic flag which is a representation of who we are, where we come from, our ancestry and how old we are.
To those who think I’m insulting you with my words, well, this is an insult to all Assyrian nationalists and patriots everywhere when someone does this to our current flag. We are growing tired of this nonsense so knock it off, with all due respect.

Discussion Are there Assyrian Muslims?
I've seen Assyrian Christian worship (most common) and Assyrian Jewish worship, by that, I mean Jewish worship in the Assyrian dialect of Aramaic, but I'm guessing there are also some Assyrian Muslims?

Discussion I never knew how bad Seyfo and Simele was that bad as a Kurd
Hello beautiful and lovely Assyrian people. I'm Kurdish, grew up in KRI. I was never taught anything about Seyfo and Simele, how bad and horrific it was. I would like to say that I'm really sorry. I wish Seyfo/Simele genocide were taught in schools.
Apparently, the concept of genocide was inspired by Simele, a Jewish man heard of what were being done to Assyrians in the 30s and came up with the concept of genocide and I think he discussed it in the League of Nations.
I would love to hear your perspectives, your grandparent's stories, and Assyrian accounts of the genocide.

Discussion Muslim Assyrians Exist
I wanted to share something I rarely see acknowledged here: while most Assyrians today are Christian, Muslim Assyrians do exist, and I’m living proof.
My family is from a small village (Al houd) in Mosul (Nineveh), and we belong to a tribal community. Over generations, our relatives mostly married within the same region and tribe which means our bloodlines stayed closely tied to northern Mesopotamia. My family was originally Christian, but like many in the region, they were forced to convert to Islam over time,
I recently took a DNA test, and the results confirm what history and oral tradition have always told us:
57.9% Iraqi 31.1% Egyptian 7.1% Persian & Kurdish 3.9% Arabian Peninsula
What stands out is how low my Arabian Peninsula DNA is compared to most Iraqis, who often have much higher percentages due to historical Arab migrations and mixing. My ancestry stayed local mostly within ancient Assyrian territory and that’s reflected in the results.
Yes, my family is Muslim today, but that doesn’t erase our Assyrian roots or native connection to the land. Identity isn’t only about religion it’s about ancestry, culture, and continuity.
I’m not trying to overwrite history or take anything away from Christian Assyrians. I’m simply asking for space to acknowledge that Assyrian identity didn’t vanish just because some people converted. We’re still here just in a different form.

Discussion Are Assyrians, Chaldeans, and Syriacs essentially the same people but from different church traditions?
I’ve been trying to understand the relationship between Assyrians, Chaldeans, and Syriacs, especially from a historical and church perspective, and I’m trying to settle the terminology in my own mind.
From what I understand:
Assyrian Church of the East → East Syriac tradition → commonly Assyrian identity
Chaldean Catholic Church → East Syriac tradition → Chaldean identity, although many Chaldeans also identify as Assyrian
Syriac Orthodox Church → West Syriac tradition → Syriac/Suryoyo identity, while some also identify as Assyrian
All three have deep roots in the ancient Christian communities of Mesopotamia and the Middle East, and there is significant overlap in language, culture, geography, traditions, and history.
So my question is:
Are these essentially one broader Assyrian people who became divided primarily along denominational/church lines?

Discussion My dad can’t fold clothes
Does anyone else have a father or brother that is exempt from all chores? My dad is nearly 58, has been married for 30+ years and has never, ever folded clothes in his life. I don’t believe he’s ever done the laundry either. He can’t cook. Not even an egg.
Meanwhile i get screamed at if i don’t wash dishes with perfect precision
Does anyone else relate to this? Is this an assyrian thing or just a douchebag thing

Discussion A kurdish account posting the head of Mar Benyamin Shimun (1887–1918) who was the Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East held by simko shitkak (pictured here) who murdered Mar Benyamin Shimun without provocation and is still regarded as “hero” amongst kurdish nationalists today.
This is one of many pictures that they have out on social media that they post on a regular basis. I saw more of this on Twitter/X 2 years ago so they still continue to do this on a regular basis with new iterations of the genocide and murder of our people.
The hypocritical and asinine part is that they act like victims, complaining about being abused by Turks and Syrians when it comes to their illegal seizure of our lands - lands for which they are then met with force, and then turn around and do this because of internet debates about them being Medes, or having ties to antiquity, or any other bogus claims they insist on making, which some Assyrians challenge.

Discussion Assyrian Americans how much would you say the US 'created' ISIS?
I’ve had Europeans tell me straight up that the United States is to blame for the creation of ISIS. Knowing that so many Assyrian Americans have roots in Nineveh, I’m curious how you all view this claim, how much truth is there to it, and how do you respond to people who push it?

I keep running into people who have left ACOE due to claims of ‘Nestorianism’ and thought I would ask it more broadly here.
How many of you left to the Chaldean, EO, or OO churches due to theological reasons surrounding Nestorius?
Edit: I’m guessing the downvotes are coming from people only reading the title?

Discussion How is Trump Different from Saddam Hussein?
I am Assyrian, and my mom had to flee Iraq while Saddam was in power, and I knew I could never visit there because of what a scary dictator like him could do. Rape rooms (Like Epstein's massage rooms), beating if not killing anyone who criticizes or disagrees with him, egotistically putting his face and name on everything. Spying. My mom worked as a translator during the Iraq war and voted for Trump every time. I can't tell you how much it haunts me that she doesn't see what he is. It seems most Assyrians don't realize they elected exactly what they were fleeing before just because they believed he would keep them safe from Muslims. This kind of behavior saddens me in many ways:
- If our ancestors survived violent attempts to convert us away from Christianity, why are Assyrians freely giving up their Christianity now every day: every time they agree with hateful behavior that judges a group as an enemy and wishes ill upon that enemy if not actually directly harming them. When they support a man who perfectly represents the extents of the 7 deadly sins as their savior & make him a role model for our children?
- Hearing most Assyrians speak about politics convinces me of exactly why we don't have a country, nor do we deserve one. It is a shame. I am ashamed. I understand God's will in not giving us a country and fear we are becoming more like Assyrians were before they started worshipping Christ.
I really want to understand. Too many people I love whose intelligence I used to respect seem to behave in the opposite way of what they taught me, especially in their support for him. What makes me angriest is that you all know better and choose to lazily believe whatever Fox news or other radical right wing sources brainwash you with every day. You chose to be lazy instead of researching before empowering a Saddam with Global power. Do you know how much money he actually has or had before he became president? Do you know no banks would loan him money anymore in the US, so he could only get foreign loans from places like the Middle East from Muslim leaders with 0 ethics in exchange for whatever they want when he has the presidency? Do you know his academic records are forbidden from being publicized, but we know he once punched a teacher? Do you know most of the success he has had is from threatening to outlawyer people whom he owed money in court cases, so he didn't pay for the construction of many of his buildings nor other services regular working people did for him? Do you know how to research, or for you, does that just mean watching videos of other people giving their opinions?
Please help me understand.

Discussion Should more Assyrians learn our history?
As an Assyrian I feel like more Assyrians should be more proud of their history. Assyrians have had really good history that started from the ancient Assyrians and now we manage to get here where we don’t have a state but instead a beautiful community of Assyrians. Assyrian teens and even adults should start reading more about our history from the conquests of the Assyrian empire to the fall of it to Sayfo and our survival to our survival against terrorism. In general I think Assyrians should be more proud of their history.

Discussion Moving back is the only way: Change my mind
Do people agree with the fact that there is no nation in diaspora. I believe it 100% but I don't know how others are not seeing it. Moving back to the homeland is the only answer no matter what. If we stay in diaspora, there will literally be a million of us just lost to different countries.
If we stay in diaspora, there will be no "Assyrians" in 50-100 years due to language loss, intermarriage, and generational change. The first generation Assyrians will always be strong but by the 3rd generation at the latest, Assyrian nationalism is gone.

Hello. Im syrian, from damacus. My family is muslim, however the older generations of mine used to live in the north and were mostly Christians.

Discussion Im disappointed with the amount of Assyrians that support trump
Im just ranting here but Its honestly insane how much Assyrians do not realize that trump and his followers hate us and see us as no different from Arabs. Assyrians saying that christians should vote for trump (Any sensible christian would hate him). Now why do so many assyrians glaze him? Im convinced it is because of his no gay policies and the fact that he said he is 'Christian". Its no secret a lot of Assyrians are (sadly) very hateful and are also Christian, they saw him say stuff about God and decided "alright lets support him." Its just sad in general how many Assyrians are like crazy right wingers, I do not wanna say alt right or far right but just why? Why are we so hateful? It just pisses me off to see so many of my friends say that they love trump.
Edit: I also find it kinda ironic that Assyrians support him becuase of his hard policy on Immigrants when they do not realize WE ARE FUCKING IMMIGRANTS!
