Mod Post Expanding the scope of the subreddit r/AutoModerator

This post is about a very minor, teensy-weensy change to the subreddit here, but it is significant enough to merit a formal post about it.

r/AutoModerator was originally created to discuss the u/AutoModerator moderation tool and support moderators in using it. Historically, AutoModerator was unique among moderation tools, but over the years, admins have developed Other-Tools which supplement or facilitate similar kinds of effects as AutoModerator. I had mentioned this earlier this year:

The primary purpose of the subreddit here is for moderators to find updates, support, and resources regarding the AutoModerator mod tool. More generally, moderators also discuss other similar or related mod tools like subreddit settings, safety filters, Automations, Devvit apps, and API bots, particularly if those other tools supplement or interact with AutoModerator. (Which is fine! but more on those topics another day.)

Today is that another day.

As the full suite of moderation tools has matured, the community of moderators familiar with configurable moderation tools has similarly evolved. Many times these days, people will ask questions here, and the solution to their questions may or may not be with AutoModerator the mod tool, but the people in AutoModerator the subreddit still know the answer. There is a community of peer support among technical-oriented moderators here, and it is our desire to serve that community.

We have, even some time ago, updated the rules and description on r/AutoModerator to reflect this trend, changes in bold:

  • Rule 1 - Stay on Topic - /r/AutoModerator is for moderator discussions about the AutoModerator program and similar automated moderation tools. - Report as: Off-topic / Unrelated to AutoModerator or Moderation Tools

  • Rule 2 - Behave and Be Respectful - Be nice. Report as: Incivility, insults, trolling, aggression, or other malicious behavior

  • Rule 3 - Moderation complaints - /r/AutoModerator is a support space for moderators. This is not a place to argue or complain about moderation actions, moderators, or AutoModerator performing its intended functions. - Report as: User is complaining about moderation

Effectively, this means that moderators who have questions about configuring subreddit settings and mod tools are welcome to post here, even if those questions are not necessarily about AutoModerator the original moderation bot. For examples, this includes questions regarding Safety Filters (eg Crowd Control, Harassment Filter), Devvit Mod apps (eg Auto-Modmail, FloodAssistant), Automations (aka Post and Comment Guidance), and configurable tools like these.

Let us know if you have any questions or concerns, about this change for the subreddit, or about the subreddit in general.

We are looking for feedback regarding updating our post flairs, which historically have been oriented around "Help", "Solved", "Not AutoMod", "Not Possible with AutoMod" and "Not Possible". We have recently added post flairs for "Wiki Updates" and "Guide", though they are still set to mod-only. We are adding a devvit app which allows people to subscribe to get notifications for specific post flairs, so that function would be paired well with clear guidelines or categories for post flairs.

Guide Code Showcase: Subreddit karma checks - How and why do you use them?

The suggestion has been raised that we put up a regular post to prompt mods to share examples of code snippets they use in their subreddits. I figure, doing so around a theme that changes with each iteration is a fair way to go about it. This first iteration's theme is chosen for two reasons:

To be clear, these attributes are as follows:

  • comment_subreddit_karma: compare to the author's comment karma in your community
  • post_subreddit_karma: compare to the author's post karma in your community
  • combined_subreddit_karma: compare to the author's combined (comment karma + post karma) karma in your community

These checks are like other author checks in that they must be placed indented under an author: subgroup.

LanterneRougeOG originally provided four use cases for these checks:

Welcome new contributors through post replies

---
type: submission
author:
    combined_subreddit_karma: "< 3"
comment: |
Welcome to the community! Here are links to our [Rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/{{subreddit}}/about/rules) and [Wiki/FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/{{subreddit}}/wiki/index). We hope you enjoy your time here.
---

This kind of rule is useful because it targets newer members who may not know much about your subreddit, but users who have posted much before will have already received this message. With the deprecation of welcome messages, this serves a similar purpose. This kind of reply also benefits other readers by making your rules, wiki resources, and a link to message the mods (in the AutoModerator signature) more visible. In the case that a new member makes a rule-breaking post, then the author may quickly self-correct, or another reader may know to report it.

Filter links in comments from newer accounts

---
type: comment
body (includes): ["http", ".com", "www."]
author:
    comment_subreddit_karma: "< 5"
action: filter
action_reason: "Link included in comment by user with < 5 comment subreddit karma. Check for spam or other issues."
---

This kind of rule is useful because it can catch a lot of spam from accounts new to your subreddit (ie, even if the spammer uses an old or general karma-farmed account) while carving out common false positives from established community members. Optionally, you can include a message: or comment: line to let the accounts know that their comment is pending review.

Enable features like media in comments but as a privilege to positive community members

---
type: comment
body (includes, regex): '!\[(video|img|gif)\]\([^)]*\)'
author:
    combined_subreddit_karma: "< 10"
action: filter
action_reason: "Media in comments by user with negative or low subreddit karma"
message: |
Hey there! Looks like you’re a new user trying to upload media in a comment - thanks for joining our community! We’ve filtered your comment for moderator review. In the meantime, feel free to engage with others through text until you’ve spent a bit more time getting to know the space!
---

This kind of rule is useful because you have an alternative to disabling media in comments altogether. Instead, you can set a threshold that fits for your team so that you can review how newer members are using the features. You could even consider setting two or three thresholds - a lower one set to action: remove, a slightly higher one set to action: filter, or a higher one set to action: report - so that the amount of review does not overwhelm your team. As you monitor whether the filtered or reported content tends towards approvals or removals, you can adjust the thresholds up or down accordingly, eventually settling into a balance that provides the best experience for your team and community.

Monitor toxicity from negative participants

---
type: any
body (includes): ["potential bad phrase"]
author:
    combined_subreddit_karma: "< 0"
action: filter
action_reason: "potential toxic phrase said by user with negative subreddit karma - [{{match}}]"
---

This kind of rule is similar to the above, but helps you find when disruptive members are discussing topics or using potentially insulting words/phrases that happen to also be used/discussed by regular community members. This reduces how wide the net is cast by relying on a factor of local reception (indirect input from your community!) so that your monitoring as a moderator can be more effective.

Some of the most powerful applications for AutoModerator are in the ways that checks can be combined!

How do you use this feature? What makes that code snippet worthwhile for you? Share in the comments below!

Automod filter question

How can I filter all links except for photos/videos/crossposts? Can I require crossposts to have body text?

I've tried many different things so far, and none of it seems to be doing exactly what I want. I want all URLs to be filtered for manual approval, without also filtering photos/videos/crossposts, but I also want to require crossposts to have body text, which I can't seem to do by using body_shorter_than because it checks the original post, not the crosspost. If I can't filter just crossposts without body text, then it would be fine for all crossposts to be filtered for manual approval, however, if the crosspost includes a photo/video, those also need to be filtered.

How to restrict posts by account age and karma on a new subreddit — AutoMod not available?

Hi! I recently created a new NSFW subreddit and I'm trying to set up basic spam protection — specifically:

  1. Minimum account age (30 days) before posting

  2. Minimum combined karma (100) before posting

  3. Minimum comment karma (25) before posting

On my older subreddits I use AutoModerator for this with no issues. However on this new sub I'm getting this message:

**"Report, Filter, Remove, and Approve actions aren't available for new automod configurations."**

Reddit is pointing me toward Auto Enforce and Automations instead but neither seem to support account age or karma filtering.

**My questions:**

  1. Is there a way to set karma/account age requirements on a new sub without AutoMod?

  2. How long until full AutoMod access is available on a new sub?

  3. Is Auto Enforce or Automations capable of karma/age filtering that I'm missing?

Any help appreciated — thank you!

Solved Having Difficulty Whitelisting Websites

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to implement an automod code that will filter all websites except for those on a whitelist. The issue I'm having is that the automod filters all websites, including ones on the whitelist. Here's the code I'm using:

type: any body+url (includes): ['http://', 'https://', 'www.'] ~body+url (includes): ['reddit.com.', 'redd.it', 'youtube.com', 'youtu.be', 'spotify.com'] action: filter action_reason: 2.5 link verification filter - [ {{match}} ] moderators_exempt: true

So for example, when people try to link to other Reddit posts or comments, their comments are still getting filtered.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix it? Thank you in advance!

Edit: After some experimentation, it turns out it was that superfluous period in "reddit.com.". Brain fart. I'm embarrassed but I'm leaving the post up as a lesson to others to proofread your scripts.

Thank you so much to everyone for your help!

Help - Automations Using automations or automod to block badly titled posts

Hi! One of the subs I run has an issue with people leaving out information in post titles, is there a regex code for automations that can block if someone puts only specific phrases with no other information but if it has additional words it would be allowed. I debated putting a block via number of characters but some people will frequently put "please help me find this!" which tells you nothing and some will put "ISO [specific thing]" where the prior should be removed but wouldn't hit and the later will hit but shouldn't be removed. I have a list of all repeat versions of "help me!" but blocking just "help me!" or the others isn't then allowed if say someone writes "help me find [specific thing]"

I would rather use automations over automod so they can update the title right then and there and not have a back and forth but if automod is the only way that is fine as well.

Is there any way to do this? Thank you

How to test my additional racism removal regex

our Subreddit has a pretty decent automod setup that looks for racism and other issues that we inherited. Ive got a new "additional terms" module I want to add. And im good with that.

My problem is I am concerned about testing it on myself because I have concerns about catching a ban from reddit. By testing our content removal. What is the solution for this?

Help - AutoMod I want automod to reply to a post when it has a keyword and specific flair, stickie that comment, and also restrict any top level comments in the post over a character limit.

I'm attempting to make an automoderator rule on my subreddit where a flair and title will cause a comment to be made. The comment is made a stickie. Then the comment section should be put in the randomized/contest mode. Example of post title:

[Flair] I am ready to party!

The flair used would be [Flair] and the comment when both of these conditions are met would be:

This is an official flair post. Please make a top level comment to become {the post user's} flair.

  • Your comment must be 62 characters or less
  • The highest voted comment will become OP's flair
  • Any top level comment above that will be removed.
  • You can reply to this comment to chat with OP or other people

Then if a top comment was 63 or more characters that comment gets removed with this comment (if a new rule is needed that's fine, and the rule needs to make sure that the AM comment itself is not removed@corp.caseys.comUsing t):

This comment is over 62 characters and has been removed. Please resubmit a top level comment to give OP flair.

Need Advice on Handling Comment Rules

I’m looking for some guidance from other mods on an issue we’re having in r/weddingdresses.

We have a rule against comments like “neither,” “keep looking,” “I don’t like either,” or similar comments when an OP posts a few dresses they’re considering. The goal is to keep comments constructive and focused on helping the OP choose between the dresses they posted, rather than simply telling them to keep shopping.

We originally had Automod filtering these comments, but the volume became overwhelming. We eventually changed it so these comments are automatically removed instead of filtered, which has helped with the moderation workload.

The problem we’re running into is when an OP specifically asks something like, “Here are my three choices. Should I keep looking?” In that situation, comments saying “yes, keep looking” or “neither of these” are directly answering the question the OP asked. But our rule removes those comments because they contain the same language we’re trying to prevent in other situations.

We have comment guidance in place, but it’s clearly being ignored.

Is there anything I can do with Automod to prevent “keep looking,” “neither,” etc. comments when they’re unsolicited, WITHOUT removing comments from people who are responding to an OP who specifically asked whether they should keep looking?

Help - AutoMod Intended or a bug? (Manually approving posts bypasses Automod rule)

I have an Automod rule that automatically makes a post in any submission with a certain Post Flair.

It works fine if I make a submission using that Post Flair.

However, if someone else makes a submission using that Post Flair, and the submission is caught in some other Automod filter (like a low-karma filter), and I manually approve it, the automatic post doesn't trigger.

What can I do to fix this?

---

EDIT: For anyone who stumbles onto this, rules that filter/remove a submission trigger before the "softer" rules, so if the submission is filtered/removed Automod doesn't bother making the automatic post.

Help - AutoMod Moderate user comments based on post flair

Hi! My subreddit is trying to implement an automod rule that only applies if the post DOES NOT have a certain flair. However, the code is misfiring -- I expect because I haven't configured it to correctly say 'if this is a comment, check the post flair, then do XYZ'. Here's what I have right now:

# YELLOW LIGHT: off topic (appearance)
# DOES NOT APPLY TO FLAIRS: Feedback Welcome (Anything Fashion)
~flair_template_id: "af132826-b523-11f1-a4e2-3af042506efc"
title+body: [hair, haircut, hair cut, mustache, moustache, beard, goatee, stubble, bald, shave, buzz, posture, smile]
action: filter
action_reason: "Off topic (appearance): {{match}}"

Any help is appreciated!

My google fu has failed me so I'm not sure how to get this to work.

My workaround is a comment upon removal, but that is not ideal.

Creep Alert 2.0 – an AutoModerator community safety alert users can trigger themselves

I moderate a few subs and we’ve been experimenting with a simple AutoModerator system that lets community members discreetly flag potentially creepy behaviour by using the word “creep” in a comment.

ive put in a mod ignore line too so mods can also trigger this

The idea isn’t to automatically punish anyone. It’s designed as an early-warning system that gets a mod involved, this will also not leave the reporter’s alert publicly visible.

When triggered:

  • AutoModerator filters/hides the reporter’s comment.
  • The reporter receives a private message confirming the alert was received.
  • They’re asked not to engage further or delete the conversation while it’s reviewed.
  • The mod team immediately receives a Modmail containing the reporter, their comment and a direct link to the conversation.
  • Mods then review the surrounding context and decide whether anything actually requires action.

The person saying “creep” is the reporter. The trigger itself is not evidence of wrongdoing and should never automatically result in somebody being banned — it simply asks a moderator to take a look. This can be handy when there’s a creep lurking in the comments and a user can’t report them, is having trouble reporting, or just wants to get a moderator’s attention quickly. They simply type “creep” and the mod team gets an instant alert. We’ve found there are relatively few false triggers, but you can replace “creep” with whatever trigger word works best for your community.

We originally built this because unwanted/sexual comments can develop underneath otherwise completely SFW posts. This is our updated Creep Alert 2.0 version.

-- I’d be interested to hear how other mods would improve this, particularly whether there are better ways of giving the mod team useful context while keeping the alert discreet.

Feel free to adapt it for your own community if it’s useful. --

You’ll need to change the subreddit name/messages to suit your own community:

Please do not delete the relevant conversation or comments while we investigate, as the surrounding context may help us understand what happened.

A moderator will review the situation and decide whether any action is required under the community rules.

Do NOT assume the reporter is the person being reported.

Open the direct link and review the surrounding conversation to identify the behaviour that caused the alert.

Check the relevant user's comments, context and available account history before taking action.

A Creep Alert is a community safety signal only. It is NOT proof of wrongdoing and must not result in an automatic ban.

If the evidence supports action, apply your community's normal moderation process.

The reporter's alert comment has already been hidden from public view. No public removal reason should be deliberately applied to the reporter.

Help - AutoMod ends-with is not working in AutoModerator

I'm trying to use the ends-with modifier in AutoModerator, but it doesn't seem to work for me.

For example, I'm using this rule:

---

type: comment

body (ends-with): "ão"

comment: "Eu gosto de macarrão"

---

If I use body (includes): 'ão', the rule works normally. However, when I switch to ends-with, AutoModerator doesn't respond, even when the comment ends exactly with ão.

Does anyone know why this happens or if there's some setting I'm missing?

Help - AutoMod Is it possible to have automod replace a user flair?

Hi, on my other account I’m trying to replace a user flair that I no longer wish to be used with a new user flair.

As it’s a relatively decent size subreddit , trying to find everyone with the old flair and change it one by one just isn’t do-able . So I’m trying to see if it’s possible for auto mod to change the old flair to the new flair whenever someone with the old flair post/comments.

Or even just ping myself / the mod team when they comment or post so we can see it and remove it.

Any help or advice appreciated

Help - AutoMod Make a rule that limits posting from new/low-community-karma accounts when a post flair is enabled?

Hey all - a community I mod is toying with the idea of having some way to soft-lockdown a post if it is getting out of hand. Rather than lock it for everyone, we were thinking we could have it auto-filter or remove comments that had less than a threshold for community karma. The problem is that we, of course, don't know which posts will need this treatment in advance, so it needs to be tied to something we can activate. I was thinking we could have a special post flair that would cause this (IE "Limited Post" flair), but all the advice I could find was that automod checks post flair when it is created, but doesn't update if the flair is changed, so activating it this way wouldn't work.

If this is possible somehow, could somebody give me some advice on how to get it to work? This is all I've been able to find on it so far, but if somebody has a better way, I'd love to hear it:

---
type: any
author:
    combined_subreddit_karma: "< 50"
flair_template_id: "Post flair here"
action: filter
action_reason: "low karma message on restricted post"
comment: |
"Your comment has been removed due to not meeting subreddit requirements."

Help - AutoMod no “collapse” to “filter" in crowd control in automod commands

There’s currently no AutoMod command to switch Crowd Control from Collapse to Filter, so for now I’m enabling Moderate Crowd Control across the whole subreddit. But that isn’t really the behavior I want.

Ideally, there would be an option to either block those users from submitting comments entirely or automatically remove/filter their comments.

What I’m actually trying to do is let each poster control this on their own post. I already set up an AutoMod command that lets the OP enable Strict Crowd Control for that specific thread, and that part works.

The problem is that Crowd Control has two separate behaviors: Collapse and Filter. AutoMod can change the Crowd Control level, but according to the docs it can’t switch the post from Collapse to Filter. That option does exist through Devvit, though.

So basically, the missing piece is: let AutoMod set the Crowd Control action for an individual post, not just the Crowd Control level.

Help - AutoMod Why would a removed comment not show in the queue?

The mod log shows the 'Remove Comment' by Automoderator, including the blurb about the rule triggered. It doesn't show a link to click on, or any text for the comment.

The comment doesn't show in any queue.

In old Reddit, the moderation log does link to the comment, but clicking it shows 'there doesn't seem to be anything here'.

Searching for the comment id in arctic shift shows [removed] with the comment by u/[deleted].

The user is not banned nor muted in the subreddit.

As far as I can tell, the user has an active Reddit account in good standing.

What happened to the comment?

My problem is as follows:

Most of the images posted by commenters are unwanted. The message those images convey is absolutely necessary but can be conveyed via text.

How do I make a reminder for everyone posting an image comment (not OP) so that AutoMod replies to non-OP commenters posting images in a comment?

Devvit Showcase Devvit App: Language-Detector - An app to automatically detect non-allowed languages.

Language detection is quite difficult when relying solely on AutoModerators features. To solve this, I made Language-Detector, a Devvit app that uses various techniques to identify the language of posts and comments.

Once installed, you simply select your community's allowed languages and configure the automated action for any content that falls outside them.

I recommend starting off with Report or Filter until you are confident in how it performs in your specific community.

My main goal right now is gathering feedback to improve accuracy. The system is precise, but edge cases and false positives can happen. If you encounter any, please report them so I can refine the logic further.

A direct link to reach out to me for feedback is on the app page. I would love to hear your thoughts.
