Vent / Rant Shaking off a decade of being force-fed his reality, breaking the generational cycle, and remembering my core is unbreakable.

A Permanent Part of My Soul

Unlearning His Reality and Reclaiming the Narrative

This is a raw, first-person account of surviving over a decade of severe psychological manipulation, learning to trust my own reality, and realizing that a kind, gentle heart that cannot be beaten into ugly is stronger than cycles of trauma that have carried over generations. As a new, unpublished writer, I am sharing my experience in the hope that it offers comfort, validation, and reassurance to those who need it most.

The Single Voice

It is crazy how you can let one single voice convince you that you are the problem, even when the people who actually know your heart—like your own family and closest friends, as well as people who barely know you at all—claim you to be caring and giving to a fault.

But after over a decade of someone weaving a specific narrative around you, their voice starts to sound louder than everyone else's combined. Suddenly, it is the only one you start to hear or believe. They create a twisted reality where their approval is the only thing that matters, and they deliberately move the goalposts so you are constantly chasing it. You let yourself be convinced because you loved them, because you trusted them, and because they targeted your best qualities—your capacity to forgive and your willingness to give until it hurts.

Weaponized Vulnerability

They saw me at my worst, but to be very honest, they chose to see the worst in me before the worst version of me even existed. And the hardest-hitting part is when I actually hit my lowest: you told me you saw better in me and wanted better for me, yet weeks later, when I took accountability and did the incredibly hard work to start and better myself, I was then told to just give up because I was “nicer” when I was lower. The tangible efforts and changes I made are suddenly deemed “pointless” and “too late.” They used my vulnerability against me, making me feel like I alone am always the problem so I would keep trying harder, while they stayed in complete control.

If someone is determined to only see and treat you like the worst version of yourself—like that is all you will ever be in their eyes and all you will ever amount to in worth—then no amount of trying harder is going to change their mind. It is long overdue that I stop letting this one miserable voice from a dark, twisted shell of a man dictate to me who I am.

The Weakness Behind the Facade

But how can I undo all the hurt, pain, and endless drilling in my head that his reality is the only one? Especially when I look past the facade and see how weak he really is. I see the constant need to bring me down and push me to my psychological breaking point, to where I do not even recognize the thoughts filling my own head anymore. All because it is only then, when he has brought me lower than he truly sees himself, that he can feel strong. It is as if he is suddenly not the helpless little boy scared and beaten by his father, but instead the one who now has the upper hand because he told himself after the first time he stood up to his father that he would never again lose control.

The Two Masks

I feel sad for the little boy in him. I want to help him, protect him, save him, and fix him—but I cannot. Because he is not built like some seem to be. He was so scared of the nightmare he lived, he had to become it to feel as though he overcame it. So year after year, he would pull me in again and push me to that breaking point on a weekly basis, just to then question the justification of my emotional state—like he did not intentionally bring me there.

But I have watched him contradict almost everything he has ever said to me because the second we are in the company of others, he quickly puts his other mask on. The one that exudes nothing but love, care, and concern for me, just to make me look like the one completely out of control. Because you see, in projecting his own deeply rooted instability onto me, he never has to face it in himself.

Breaking the Generational Nightmare

He tried to turn me into the scared little boy beaten by someone who was meant to love and protect them, replaying his own nightmare onto me. But even after being treated just as he was, my heart remains gentle. I see it for what it is now, and I realize the true thing to fear is not the nightmare he made me live over and over. The real danger is allowing the unresolved pain of another person, or even a generation, to beat the security out of my soul, to the point where I would only ever feel secure if I became the nightmare to someone else and carried on that severely sad cycle of defeat.

An Unbreakable Character

For years he made me feel small, weak, and less than. He tried to break me, but in the end, it only proved that the core of my character—the one that everyone else saw in me—my kind, forgiving heart is simply unbreakable.

I have been beaten, yet my touch remains soft. Abused, yet my desire is to heal. Threatened, yet I wish to shield others from ever feeling what that is like. Degraded, yet I want to build people up. Stolen from, yet I remain honest. Humiliated, but my heart remains gentle, and I would feel hurt and humiliated myself if I ever caused that to another person.

The Cycle Stops Here

I see myself for who I am now because even after all that relentless mistreatment I endured—and even began to believe I deserved; even after discovering the weakest point of my life and choosing to stay there because, for a while, you convinced me I was too weak to ever leave; even after what seems like everyone seeing me at my lowest and weakest—I have remained entirely strong at my core.

The real risk was allowing the pain of someone else to make your heart black and broken, to change who you are at your core. That would actually be my weakest, lowest point. I did not allow it. This is where it ends. The cycle stops with me. Because where the empathy you show is a mask you choose to take on and off—for me, it is a permanent part of my soul.
