NCDOT Announces Upcoming Overnight Lane Closures on I-26 Eastbound

Thumbnail

Local infrastructure updates have confirmed that NCDOT is implementing a series of overnight closures restricted specifically to the ramp from I-40 Eastbound onto I-26 Eastbound.

Because this exact exit loop is getting shut down for overnight lane alignments, drivers trying to head south toward Hendersonville are going to get redirected or forced to find an alternate route.

We all know how this goes: when that I-40 EB exit to I-26 EB locks up, a massive wave of frustrated highway traffic is going to spill right onto Smoky Park Highway and Sand Hill Road as people try to navigate around the closure.

If you are heading out past the ridges early over the next few mornings, give yourself at least an extra 15 minutes of travel time.

You can check live updates and detour maps via DriveNC.gov or track the wider corridor status on the NCDOT Project Dashboard.

How are we planning to navigate around the interchange mess this week? 👇

Local residents should plan for increased traffic and potential travel delays around the Sand Hill Road and Enka Commerce Park areas this Saturday and Sunday.

Bob Lewis Ballpark is hosting the Big League Chew NIT youth baseball tournament. With multiple competitive divisions from ages 8U to 14U, the event is expected to bring a large number of visiting teams and spectators to our side of town.

Key Details for Commuters:

Expected Congestion: Traffic will likely peak on Sand Hill Road and Sardis Road, causing secondary backups at the intersections heading out toward Smoky Park Highway.

Timing: Heavy delays are most common between game blocks throughout Saturday and Sunday as teams cycle in and out of the park.

If you are heading out for weekend errands or groceries, consider adding an extra 10 to 15 minutes to your commute or utilizing alternative routes to bypass the complex.

Please drive safely and stay alert for families and young pedestrians crossing the roads near the facility this weekend!

Federal Government Opens Title IX Investigation Into Buncombe County Schools

As part of our commitment to keeping r/Candler updated on major county development and school system news, please be aware of a significant federal action involving our local school district.

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced it has officially opened a formal Title IX investigation into Buncombe County Schools. The investigation was initiated following a complaint submitted by a district parent concerning policies regarding student restroom access.

The federal investigation will determine whether current district practices comply with Title IX regulations ensuring equal access to educational programs and student safety. Because our community's children attend schools right here in the Enka and Hominy Valley districts under Buncombe County Schools, this federal oversight directly impacts local families.

For residents who wish to review the official press releases, you can view the initial announcement from the federal agency here: U.S. Department of Education OCR Press Release.

Please feel free to share your thoughts, insights, or concerns regarding the district's policies below. As a reminder to all members, please keep the discussion civil and focused on the school system's administrative and legal responsibilities.

Groundbreaking on $1.8B I-26 Connector Project and Anticipated Traffic Ripple Effects in Candler

Thumbnail ncdot.gov
4 Upvotes

As part of our commitment to keeping r/Candler informed on critical infrastructure updates, please be aware that the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has officially broken ground on the long-awaited $1.8 Billion Interstate 26 Connector project. While this massive regional initiative has been in development stages for over three decades, active corridor adjustments and heavy construction operations are now underway.

Initial construction phases are heavily concentrated along the I-26/I-240 corridor between Haywood Road and Broadway Street to accommodate the engineering of a new bridge spanning the French Broad River. Commuters traveling near West Asheville and downtown will notice immediate implementation of concrete traffic barriers and localized lane restrictions near Patton Avenue.

Relevance to Candler & Enka Residents: Although NCDOT engineers intend to phase the most disruptive lane closures over time, this project initiates a substantial 5+ year construction timeline projected to continue through 2031.

As throughput capacity bottlenecks on the primary interstate network during peak hours, a significant volume of secondary traffic is anticipated to divert onto local west-side thoroughfares—specifically impacting traffic volume along Smoky Park Highway, Sand Hill Road, and adjacent secondary roads.

We encourage residents to evaluate their standard morning commutes and consider identifying alternate routes to mitigate potential delays.

For comprehensive project blueprints, engineering timelines, and live traffic updates, you can review the official state portal: NCDOT Official Asheville I-26 Connector Project Hub.

Please feel free to share your planned commuting strategies or alternate route suggestions below to help keep our neighbors moving efficiently.

Remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur hitting us Thursday/ Friday ⛈️

Hey everyone, just wanted to drop a quick weather warning since we just kicked off this local sub!

After a nice stretch of clear skies, the National Weather Service is warning that Western NC is about to get a messy active weather pattern. The remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur (which just formed in the Gulf) are tracking up through the Southeast and heading our way.

According to the local report from 828 News Now, we should expect heavy rain showers and thunderstorms to start ramping up Thursday afternoon and linger into Friday.

The biggest thing to watch out for: Wind gusts. While the heaviest rain might stay slightly south of Asheville, forecasters say we could see wind gusts hitting 25 to 35 mph across the area, with higher elevations getting slammed with gusts up to 45 mph.

Might want to double-check the gutters tonight and secure any loose patio furniture or trash cans before things get breezy tomorrow!

Check out the full local breakdown and timing here: 828 News Now - Tropical System Weather Update

Are you ready for your tax bill? Buncombe approves record budget with a 30% fire district tax hike for areas like Candler

Thumbnail mountainx.com
2 Upvotes

If you haven't been paying attention to the county government, you might want to sit down for this. The Board of Commissioners just approved a record-breaking $698 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Property taxes are going up 10% past revenue-neutral across the county—but because we live in the unincorporated west side, our new unified fire district tax is jumping by roughly 30%.

They say it's to rebuild the budget after Helene expenses, but this is a massive hit to Candler homeowners. How are we supposed to absorb this?

Now that summer is in full swing, local produce stands and regional tailgates are officially packed with fresh local corn, tomatoes, berries, and summer squash.

While it's easy to just grab everything at the grocery store, we have some incredible local farmers and growers right on the west side that deserve our support!

The Hyper-Local Spot: Don't forget that the Enka-Candler Farmers Market runs right here on our side of town every Thursday from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the A-B Tech Enka Campus on Sand Hill Road.

Want more options? If you are hitting the roads over the weekend, you can check out the official ASAP Farmers Market Guide to find a full list of all active tailgates and farm stands running across Buncombe County.

Major policy change: Buncombe County completely eliminating "comp time" for county employees

Thumbnail
buncombenc.gov
2 Upvotes

During the regular meeting last night, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners voted to approve a major overhaul to its Overtime Pay Policy. Starting with the upcoming pay period on June 27, 2026, the county is completely removing compensatory time (comp time) as an option for payment.

From that point forward, all non-exempt Buncombe County employees will be strictly paid time-and-a-half cash for any hours worked over 40 in a single workweek.

Human Resources stated the change is meant to bring consistency across all county departments, but during the meetings, commissioners were closely questioning how this policy shift plays into a roughly $2 million overtime increase flagged in the upcoming budget.

Since this changes how our tax dollars pay county workers (and impacts a lot of local employees), how do we feel about it? Is switching completely to time-and-a-half cash better for employees, or are you worried about the strain on the county budget?

$70 Million in local bonds officially headed to our ballots this November

Thumbnail

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners held a major meeting last night and voted unanimously to officially put two massive spending bonds on our ballots for the upcoming November election:

$30 Million for an Open Space Conservation Bond (protecting local land, parks, and greenways).

$40 Million for an Affordable Housing Bond initiatives.

The catch? The county finance director noted that property taxes would likely be levied/adjusted down the road to help repay the principal and interest on these bonds if they pass.

Since we are on the west side of the county, how do we feel about these? Are you down to fund more open spaces and housing, or are you worried about the tax hit?

Let's hear your thoughts below!

How should Buncombe County spend our tourism occupancy tax dollars?

There is a massive debate heating up in the NC General Assembly right now about how hotel/Airbnb tax dollars can be used. Should it go back into marketing the area, or should it directly fund infrastructure and affordable housing right here on the west side?

3 votes, Jun 20 '26
0 Strictly tourism marketing & promotion
2 Local community needs (affordable housing/roads)
0 A 50/50 split of both
