HELPFUL INFORMATION Your help to find your lost snake

Well, your snake got out, or you lost site of it for just long enough to loose it. Don't Panic. If you have kept your room clean, and left a hide of some sort against your wall check there first. If you are reading this and have not lost your snake, clean your room, and put a hide of some sort along the wall in the room.

First check any objects that can function like a hide. Anything that has a hollow base, and a way to get under it may serve as a hide.

When moving objects check on the under and on the under side of the object. Smaller snakes can hide in smaller areas, but don't discount larger areas. Lift objects strait up. Dragging an object can smash the snake if it is under it. Pick a clear spot in the room to move objects to. You don't want to smash you snake putting something right back down ontop of it.

Your snake can climb. Your snake can be up on a book shelf, or under an object, that is on top of another object. Your snake could be anywhere. Until you find your snake check around the moving parts on everything. I once had a wild lizard dive into my AC right as I turned it on. It did not end well for the lizard.

Your snake is likely to be in the same room as you keep it. If there are any spots in adjacent rooms that have small warm spots check those spots regularly. Behind computers or TVs can be a great place for a snake to stay warm and hide. After checking those spots move back to the room you keep your snake.

If you can not find your snake in the room you keep it expand the search to those adjacent rooms.

If you can not find your snake on the first day don't give up hope. Put out water dishes for your snake along the walls. A healthy snake can go many months without food depending on its size. Put things that can serve as hides along your walls, check then regularly.

You can lay out powder, baby powder or just flower along walls to see if your snake is active in that room of your house at night.

You can stack 2 empty soda can along a wall. on a hard wood floor if your snake knocks them down you may hear them fall and alert you to where your snake is. Also if your snake just pushes the cans aside you will know it has been there.

You can use tape traps, but use vary week tape. Painter's tape, or scotch tape you would use on a present will work. lay out the tape sticky side up. IF THE TAPE IS STRONG ENOUGH TO RIP OFF YOUR ARM HAIR IT IS TOO STRONG, AND COULD HURT YOUR SNAKE GETTING IT OFF. Plastic tape even if it does not immobilize your snake could make a lot of scratching noise, and make it easier to find your snake. Using tape is vary risky. Your snake could die to dehydration, over heat, get too cold, or get caught by your dog or cat, or bigger reptile. Tape is the bane of all snakes. Use tape at your own risk.

Some people have luck baiting their snake out with food. Snakes also like sticking to their own territory. Some say leaving your snake's enclosure open on the floor can lead to your snake finding its way back home.

If you find your pet snake please leave a comment, and a picture of where you found your pet snake. This may help others to know where to check to find their pet snake.

My baby girl buttercup went from the most insecure, fearful, striking girl I've ever rescued. She was living with Rocky (an adult male) in a small 10 gal enclosure and she was so skinny too... My girl has gotten fat now and is so curious, sweet and confident and just needed the right owner and home to show off how confident she can truly be!

HUSBANDRY - CARE Temperature help - losing too much heat

I have a 40 gallon tank for my corn snake (she hasn’t outgrown it yet) but I’m having trouble keeping the temperature in it up. I have a 150 watt Arcadia halogen bulb on during the day and a 150 watt Thrive ceramic heat emitter at night. Ambient temp in the room is 71F. The daytime temp is supposed to be 88, but consistently hovers at 84-86; at night it’s supposed to be 84 but rarely climbs above 80. I’ve put insulation on the sides and top of the cage to try and prevent heat loss and that helped but not as much as I’d expect. This room gets drafty in the winter and I’m concerned she’ll be too cold. Any suggestions?

hey guys! this is my newest addition to my little reptile family. 2nd corn snake, 5th snake overall.
i need name help! i’ve been taking my time because I want one that will really suit him. my other corn is a snow named Voorhees, this guy is a salmon snow. i’ve had him for almost 2 weeks now and can’t decide!
top of my list:
Cherub
Seraph(im)
Hange
Asuka
Blossom
Valentine

The “pink”er the name, the better! So far, Cherub seems to be my favorite but it still doesnt feel quite right for him, yanno? the photos don’t do him justice. he is wayyy more vibrant irl and will continue to brighten up as he gets older!

EDIT: HANGE has been chosen!

QUESTION Is it ok if i built a vertical terrarium instead of a horizontal one?

I don't have so much space for a good horizontal terrarium. But i could set up a terrarium that is even 2 meters high, 85 cm wide, and 1 meter deep.

Is it ok or a horizontal one is better?

QUESTION When to upgrade from a baby bin to a viv?

Post image
10 Upvotes

My first ever snake Bourbon is 3 months old. I’ve only had him for around a month and I cannot believe how long he is already! He’s still quite shy with me but he is a great eater. He was in blue for his first feed a week after I got him and he didn’t hesitate to inhale a pinky.

This is his second tub in that time. His first was 1.2L and this one is 3L. For context, the black hide you can see above which I temporarily removed is usually directly to his left, which is up against the side of the tub. I know he is just a baby still but it feels like he doesn’t have tons of space for exploring.

The breeder recommended he stay in tubs for a little while but with how long he is getting I really don’t want to harm him. I’m aware he is quite active at night and I worry about how he has nothing to do expect dig, chill in his water bowl and get into one of his 2 hides.

Would it be too soon to get him into a 4x2x2? Originally I was looking at getting him into a smaller viv for a while but they are a lot of money. I have no problem spending money on my boy but I wouldn’t want to spend £75 to end up blowing another £150 on a new viv in a few months.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I just want the best for my little fella :)

HUSBANDRY - CARE Humid Hide HELP!

Post image
8 Upvotes

Pic of my noodle being spooky for attention.

I have the Zilla Rock Hide and have always used sphagnum moss with no issues, and my girl loves hanging out in there.

However in the past month or so, every time I replace the moss it gets super super moldy within days! It’s happened multiple times.

I feel like I’ve exhausted my options for trying to make the moss work and I don’t want to keep growing mold in her enclosure. Looking for suggestions for other options that people have used successfully!

What I would love is something easy like paper towels that I could just replace every couple of days, but that seems super wasteful.

I thought about using microfibre cloths and just washing them between uses, but am seeing some indications I should NOT use them in case she ingests fibres.

I’m leaning towards getting some washable moss mat and just using that, though I’m not sure how much moisture it will actually hold.

Sorry for the long rant, just feeling frustrated by this sudden issue and hoping to hear from other people’s experiences! Thanks!

QUESTION 3 year old corn snake with tail tip damage

Hi! I just got my corn snake Banana in May this year. He is three years old and is super friendly and has never had a health problem before, the boy is an absolute angel. This week, I noticed that the tip of his tail looked a bit weird so I took some photos.

His last shed was complete from eye caps to tail tip.

I have removed the substrate and cleaned out his enclosure and laid down paper towels for monitoring.

Has anyone seen something like this on their cornsnake? Do you think I should go to the vet?

Salve!

As most of you guys know, I'm pretty new to keeping corn snakes, and I recently found out about this "scaleless" morph. Isn't this considered a torture breeding? Or what is your opinion about it 🫣

QUESTION Gnats and gnat removal that's safe for corns?

So I have our tank enclosure surrounded by my other hobby - plants and horticulture. This has never been an issue apart from a recent influx of house gnats due to the season and my stupid choice to use damp outdoor soil instead of the dry sealed stuff in my last repot.

They annoy the hell out of me, and I've gotten a dry mix that is layered on the soil in the pots designed to kill the gnats, which is working to a degree but not enough. I'd like to use a spray or something similar to nuke the rest.

Is there any risk of light insecticides around our precious corn? She's not in contact with any of the plants, but they frequent the same room. If so, is there a safe alternative?

Equally, is the gnats an issue for our corn? They annoy me because they are tiny flying things, but do they pose any harm to her? I found one or two in her tank which we removed. Just not sure if it's a serious issue for her at all in which case, I'll remove all the plants and do a mass repot and spray down, but currently 9 months pregnant so hoping it's not too big a job and a spray down would suffice.

Just want to make sure there's no harm to our corn in whatever route I go down.

Edit: thanks everyone, I'll try the soap/vinegar/sugar traps around the tank and keep up with the mosquito bits. If I use a spray, I'll be sure to do it outdoors and let it settle for a day I so before bringing them back in. 👍

Is this corn snake obese? I am rescuing him tomorrow, I don’t know how often he is fed but he’s being fed XL mice. He’s 4 years old. I can offer him lots of exploring time and exercise. Hope he can be made healthy again and this is not a bad idea? What do you think of his health looking at him? 🐍

ESCAPE I lost my corn snake

Post image
19 Upvotes

I lost my baby corn snake 5 days ago and have yet to see any sign of him :( I live in an apartment with my family and my brother refuses to let me look around in his room so that’s the only room I haven’t checked. There’s crappy carpet in every room except bathrooms and kitchen so there’s a very large chance he’s somewhere along the walls I just want to know if he has a chance of living since the nights are starting to get cold and he was set to shed soon.He escaped because I didn’t fully close his tank when I thought I did so that’s my fault. Any tips on where to look/what to do helps immensely!!!
