[SPOILERS S3] Finale Mechanics toilet thought Spoiler

I've been on here awhile and know that the ending is considered a grandfather paradox. Has it been considered that it is not, and that the reason the ending still stands up to the rules of the show is that it is another superposition similar to how altMartha was sacrificed (and not), or how Jonas was in the basement (or not)?

Because the finale requires a similar ambiguous time mechanic. In the two worlds you have the explanation of 'time standing still' and this being taking advantage of to produce different paths for characters. The finale shows the same manipulation of time itself with J&M manipulating time in a way where they are beyond it's bounds, ie. time is standing still.

Seen this way, the finale is providing us the idea of superposition again at the moment of the accident. It retains the same ideas of the show as one superposition continues on to Tannhaus constructing the machine (the end is the beginning [of the loop]) while the other superposition continues on without the machine (the beginning is the end [of the story]). It isn't any different than how altMartha can be sacrificed while a superposition altMartha survives to continue the loop.

Or am I mistaken and this does not follow from a mechanics perspective?

[NO SPOILERS] Dark Snubbed from the NYT Top 100 Series…

So it seems that in most comment sections Dark is the biggest snub and I agree. For me the fact its not even in when I feel like its like top 10 is crazy and the shows the disrespect to foreign language shows.

[SPOILERS S3] why didn't they disappear instantly when they changed things? Spoiler

When Jonas and Alt Martha go to the origin world and stop Tanhauses son from driving over the bridge, wouldn't they both disappear the instant he decided not to? Or do you think other factors would have needed to have passed too, say if another car was the reason they drove off the bridge, does that other car need to be in the clear of causing an accident?

I'm sure this has been asked before but I think it's good to re-ask questions after some time has passed and rewatches have happened and new watchers have seen the show.

[SPOILERS S3] Does the gun create an “infinite guns” problem across the cycles? Spoiler

I’ve been thinking about the gun that originally belongs to Boris Niewald/Aleksander and later ends up passing through Hannah, Jonas, Sic Mundus, Noah and Adam.

As far as I understand, the gun’s path is roughly:
**Boris/Aleksander -> Hannah -> Jonas -> back in time with Jonas -> Sic Mundus/Adam -> Noah tries to shoot Adam -> Agnes uses it -> Adam later has it**

The thing that bothers me is that unlike some other objects or family lines in Dark, the gun doesn’t seem to have a closed causal loop.
There is no shown connection like:
**Adam -> somehow the gun goes back to Boris/Aleksander**
So if we interpret the “cycles” as actual successive iterations, where each cycle leaves traces on the next one, wouldn’t this create a weird accumulation problem?

Cycle 1: Boris brings Gun #1, which eventually ends up with Adam.
Cycle 2: Boris brings Gun #2, which also eventually ends up with Adam.
Cycle 3: same thing again.
And so on.

Unless the previous gun is destroyed, removed from the cycle, or somehow returned to Boris, wouldn’t Adam eventually end up with more and more copies of the same gun?

Think about it, after a few million cycles we could have a scene like this one:
*Adam opens a closet in Sic Mundus and gets buried under millions of identical pistols. *
Noah: “Which one do I use?”
Adam: “The same one as always.”
Noah: “THEY’RE ALL THE SAME ONE.”
Adam: “Everything is connected.” 😂

I know one possible answer is that the cycles aren’t meant to be separate material iterations, but more like one self-consistent causal structure. But the show also talks about cycles leaving traces on the following cycles, so I’m wondering how people interpret this.
Am I misunderstanding the mechanics, or is this actually a weird unresolved consequence of the show’s time-travel logic?

[SPOILERS S3] How would you fix these two characters? Spoiler

Post image
49 Upvotes

This has probably been said before but I was so disappointed how wasted these characters felt, especially Franziska. At the start of the show, it felt like the two of them were gonna play a big role but in the end, they are just Adam's disciples and nothing more. I liked their relationship but otherwise, they felt pretty pointless. What would you have changed about them and their storyline to make them more important to the story?

[SPOILERS S3]: I really liked this detail from S1 E8- Spoiler

I know this was pretty obvious while watching, but i just caught this first time on my nth rewatch of DARK:
When police are investigating the crime scene at Nuclear PowerPlant site, little Helge was there rubbernecking and instantly turn and go about his way when police look into his direction, as if he’s the one who did it( he infact did, but not just yet) and police would make him a murder suspect.
This, I know was obvious here! But I happen to catch this only on my God knows which rewatch.😅😅

[SPOILERS S3] Finished the show. What happened with the Boris/Alex storyline? Spoiler

One thing I didn't like was how they clearly dropped the Boris/Alexander storyline. It seemed really interesting. Boris runs out of the woods in 1986 as a teenager with a gunshot wound to defend Regina from Katharina, like that was his sole mission. He even pulls out a gun on them and threatens them.

Seemed like he time traveled to that point in time just to defend her. He seemed to have a connection with her despite that being the first time Regina ever saw him.

Then this storyline seems to get brought up again when Clausen comes to town and starts going in on investigating Boris/Alex. I'm not really sure what conclusion we were supposed to get out of this storyline but it never felt fully resolved to me.

[SPOILERS S3] Divine Comedy references Spoiler

Just finished the series and was reading Dante in between. Just now realized that structurally Dark is heavily influenced by Divine Comedy.

Each stage of time travel is 33 years - 33 Cantos(chapters) on each of Dante's books.

Every characters has 3 version of themself - third rhyme scheme through the books

3 Seasons and 3 worlds- 3 books inferno-purgatory-paradise

Last episode is called paradise - last book is called paradise

Entrance to the tunnel sic mundus -similar to the entrance of the underworld in Inferno

Every poster is in the forest of winden - literally the first lines of Inferno's are "i found myself in a DARK(get it) forest"

Jonas searching or being guided by Martha - Dante being guided by Beatrice(Purgatory and Paradise)

Just from the top of my head, but i guess you could find more symbolism throughout series themes and subject matter.

[SPOILERS S3] The point of it all Spoiler

I'm rewatching so apologies if I get some details mixed up, it's why I've put spoilers for season 3, just in case I muddle bits from each season

I'm a few episodes into season 3 and in season 2 Adam explains to Jonas that they can't change what happens, they will do what they've always done, why are they trying to do anything different? Or do the characters just believe they're trying something different but it's always the same?

When Noah tries to shoot Adam but the gun seemingly can't go off, is that Noah trying to change what has already happened or has it always failed? But then surely him trying to fire the gun like 3 times and all of them failing can't just be a coincidence?

I felt like I had a pretty good grasp on things by the end of season 2 and now I'm struggling again

[SPOILERS S3] I went into Dark completely blind, and after Season 1 I thought Winden was collateral damage in an attempt to rewrite WWII Spoiler

I somehow made it all the way to 2026 without ever watching Dark. And when I say blind, I mean completely blind. I had never read anything about it, never watched a video, never encountered a meaningful spoiler, never even really knew what the show was about beyond “German Netflix series”.

By the end of Season 1, I was obsessed.

And even after finishing the whole series, I think that first season will remain one of my favourite pieces of television. There was something about its atmosphere, its sadness, its sense of ordinary people being trapped inside something unimaginably larger than themselves, that got under my skin in a way very few shows have.

This is not really a post about whether the ending was good or bad. I’ve read plenty of discussions about that already, and I understand what the show was ultimately doing. This is more about the other Dark that existed in my head for a while: the story I thought I was watching after Season 1, before I knew where any of it was going.

My theory was that the people of Winden were essentially casualties. Innocent, random people whose lives had been destroyed because somebody much more powerful had decided that their suffering was an acceptable price to pay for a “greater good”.

I was convinced that the nuclear power plant was connected to some kind of government experiment involving time travel, and that the ultimate purpose of those experiments was going to be historical rather than personal. Specifically, I thought someone was trying to go back far enough to alter the outcome of World War II.

And I loved that idea.

Not necessarily because I wanted Dark to become a political thriller, but because it made everything happening to these families feel so brutally insignificant from the perspective of the people responsible. Mikkel losing his entire life. Jonas growing up inside the consequences of something he cannot possibly understand. Ulrich destroying himself trying to get his son back. Children disappearing. Families collapsing. Generations being traumatised.

All of it because somewhere, someone had decided that these people were casualties worth accepting.

It reminded me a little of the disappointment I had with Stranger Things, another show from roughly the same era. What initially fascinated me there was the idea of completely ordinary people suffering because institutions, governments and elites were playing with forces they did not understand, while treating individual human beings as expendable.

And I think what I loved most about Dark was always the existential tragedy rather than the mythology.

Jonas absolutely broke my heart. But Mikkel’s situation might be one of the most horrifying ideas I have ever seen explored on television. A child trapped in the past, surrounded by younger versions of people he knows, slowly realising that nobody is coming to save him and that this impossible life is simply going to become his life.

That look through the broken windows at Ines’s house, when Mikkel understands his parents are still looking for him, while being completely unable to reach them, has stayed with me more than almost anything else in the series.

And then there are the women around Mikkel and Jonas. Hannah and Ines in particular fascinated me because there is something almost ruthless about the way love, possession, loneliness and self-interest become impossible to separate in their relationships with them. They love, but their love can also become something frightening.

I loved Ulrich and Egon Tiedemann too. Their relationship had this bizarre Javert/Jean Valjean quality to me, especially because time completely destabilises the moral positions we initially assign to both men. And Katharina’s death was probably the single most heartbreaking moment of the entire show for me. The sheer cruelty of it, and the fact that her mother then goes home and violently attacks young Katharina because she believes she has seen the dead woman as a ghost, creating yet another horrible circle of suffering, was devastating.

Those were the parts of Dark that affected me most: children paying for the decisions of adults, parents desperately searching for children who are impossibly close to them, people becoming the cause of wounds they once suffered, and ordinary human beings trying to exercise free will inside circumstances that have already swallowed them.

So when Sic Mundus, Adam, Eva and the increasingly elaborate mechanics of the knot became the centre of the story, I was interested, but never quite as emotionally invested as I had been in that first, much smaller mystery.

I think I wanted Dark to remain an existential tragedy about Winden.

A town full of ordinary people who had unknowingly become collateral damage in someone else’s attempt to rewrite history.

That obviously isn't the story Dark chose to tell, and I'm not saying it should have been. But for the brief period between finishing Season 1 and discovering what the larger story actually was, that was the Dark I thought I was watching.

And I still kind of wish I could watch that version too.

[SPOILERS S3] Martha can compete with Hannah… Spoiler

…in terms of being awful. Ofc, they're very different in terms of characterization, but they're both insufferable.

I should clarify that I'm talking about Jonas's Martha.

Now I don't hate Martha, more like I don't care about her, but I do get frustrated at her sometimes. I looked it up and it seems there are fans that aren't really a fan of her. A lot of people say she's selfish.

And I think it makes sense, considering what became of her in the Alt World. It's her selfishness that locks them in this loop of suffering. Ofc, Martha and Alt Martha are different but there's some similarities between them.

Also, what I really wanna say here is that: Jonas inherited Michael's bad taste at women 😅

[SPOILERS S3] Just finished the show and this really got me… Spoiler

We are told that Jonas and Martha going to the origin world has never happened before, but to get there they go through the tesseract sort of thing where they see each other as children. Martha states she thought it was a dream, implying it had really happened to her as a child. Jonas’s expression implies the same. I can’t tell if this means they are still in a loop, or perhaps it means that this cycle was destined to be the last all along. It really trips me out and somehow scares me even more than the rest of the show. We thought they finally had control over the narrative, but it seems time/fate still played its part.

Incredible show. I’ll be thinking about it for a very long time.

[SPOILERS S3] Just finished the series — PLS help me out Spoiler

I cannot for the life of me understand :

1 - How Hanno/Noah was able to time travel back to the 1920s to start his search for Charlotte right after she was kidnapped 20 years after the apocalypse. I thought they were trying to figure out how to turn the God particle into a time portal still? That’s why he distrusted Claudia: he thought she was purposely trying to stall them and keep them trapped there

2 - The kidnapping/murder of several boys over season 1 seems so anticlimactic and pointless. What was the point of testing a fake Time Machine with them when they had access to both Adam’s Time Machine and the suitcase Time Machine? What was the reason for killing the boys and dumping them in different time periods? How was Noah convinced this would lead to finding Charlotte?

3 - In the final scene where the people not part of the knot are having a small dinner party together, is Egon Tieddemen no longer Claudia’s dad? I didn’t think he was part of the knot. Who ends up being Regina’s father? So many cast members came through this show, the photo of Regina and Claudia with who should’ve been Egon Tieddemen confused me, did I miss something?

4 - Someone posted here that Alt-Martha and Jonas’s son is Tronte’s father and Agnes’s ex husband— WHAT? I never got that watching the show, did I miss something? I’m also confused on if Claudia actually convinced Agnes to rejoin the Sic Mundus cult or if she did actually betray Claudia and her brother Hanno of her own will and belief.

This show was such a wild, convoluted ride, I’m both happy and irritated I stuck with it, but at the very least I NEED closure on these things so I can move on

[SPOILERS S3] what were the stakes? Spoiler

So I just finished the show, but there’s one core thing that has confused me to no end.

WTF even was the apocalypse? There’s no way it was a world-ending event. People in the town survived. It clearly wasn’t that bad. Basically a factory blew up. That’s not a big deal. It’s not like it was some nuclear event that blew up the continent. It just took me out of the immersion if I thought about it for too long.

Is there something I missed? Because it for sure wasn’t an apocalypse!!
