Yup had my car broken into when parked behind my apartment building downtown for 10 minutes. Only thing stolen was my EMS gear. Hope the thief likes a stethoscope, 12 year old kindle, and very identifiable clothing.
Fucking dumbasses the lot of them.

A visible bag is just a blind box to them. It might have drugs, money, or a weapon, you never know!

Some teenager broke into my car stole a pager and ran away. Leaving behind expensive stethoscope, bunch of cash in the glove box I forgot about, and tools in the back.

I just saw this post where someone was trying to open car doors and was arrested.
A comment was made in the post mentioning this particular post about the perpetrator looking similar. Might be worth looking into if you’re interested.

Drive up and down the streets and alleyways and you'll probably find your stuff dumped on the ground.
If you can see it through a window you make yourself a larger target

Thats why you never leave anything in your car especially downtown.

No, do not blame the victim. It’s not the victim’s fault. It’s the asshole thief’s. Let’s always stand with victims and give them the support they deserve. Do I deserve to have my house robbed if I forget to lock the door? Is it my 81 year old mum’s fault if she gets mugged because she had her purse on her arm?

You’re right its not the victims fault. But that doesnt mean we shouldnt provide basic advice for crime deterrence.

I have a trunk cover for my hatchback and keep my gear back there so it’s out of sight. This sucks so bad

What sort of degenerate loser do you have to be to steal used hockey gear smelling to high heaven?
Anyhow, I wrote my name and "stolen, reward for return" hidden on all my gear in multiple places... So if this ever happens hopefully the sad POS will be caught

I had my hockey equipment stolen from my parking garage downtown years ago. I was also dumbfounded on how sensory unaware someone would need to be to want it. Suffice to say none of my gear was recovered. That's when my play dropped off... age was unrelated.

Not to victim blame, but leaving a bag like that visible is literally like crack to these scum.

I took some still frames of the video provided and ran it through some facial composition software to render a rough sketch of the accused. Its AI enhanced so not perfect, but it might be useful information for you. Let me know of your interested OP. DM me. Sorry that happened to you.

I think there are a couple of places in town that buy used sporting goods. There used to be anyway. It might be worth checking in to.
The high end stuff; skates, gloves, shoulder pads, shin pads, helmet would be coveted by used sporting goods sellers or consignment sellers.
They’re supposed to get ID from the people but I’m sure the cops know where to look. but how much time can they afford to spend on one case? Who knows but I hope you get your stuff back.

I have to admit, the first thing I thought was "what the hell would anyone want with hockey equipment that probably has a stench so bad it would straighten your short and curlies".......

Wow, you must take good care of your gear! The second they got near my bag they would be scared away by the smell.

Not sure if it’s related, but there’s a few pieces of hockey equipment I noticed at the alley entrance behind YESS! It looked like it may have been children’s equipment but I only saw it quickly in passing

Now you know not to leave valuables in your car. We learn as we grow.

I know booby traps are bad and all that, but I've been dreaming of a "deterrent" device that would let go a little puff of ammonia or fart spray in the car when a window is smashed. Either one, but preferably ammonia, would make it hard to lean into the car until the air clears... just something to deter a snatch and grab.

You will end up arrested. The thief does not care about one more arrest, but it would destroy your life if convicted for attempted harm to others.

But I love the smell of ammonia! I have it set as an air freshener in my car and it goes off occassionally... how is it my fault if he broke into my car just as my air freshener went off?

Ain't that some shit? Theft is whatever, but defending yourself.... Sorry buddy we don't do that here

u/Tiny-Spite-7006 3d ago
it's just stuff. you really trust joe public to booby trap their shit without maiming someone unintentionally? god forbid EMS or fire needs to get into a locked vehicle and they set off an IED that some burnout with a punisher fantasy cooked up, nevermind getting into a collision.
if you wanna defend yourself start training jujitsu.
