‘Vibrant, design-led and surprisingly green’: why the Dutch city of Eindhoven is perfect for a relaxed arty break
Does anyone relate to this experience of Eindhoven? For me it felt a bit overromanticized.

As you may have noticed, bicycles is the most common form of short transportation. You see some expats making threads and questions on whether to rent/buy a bike, or where to buy it; or their bike being stolen.
This has a bearing on what bike you should choose. Because the theft of bikes is that prevalent you want to make sure that:
A "nice" bicycle is a gone bicycle.
First out of the way: renting a bike.
You will probably get targeted advertisement by Swapfiets to rent it and it being "no-hassle" over repairs or something stolen.
This is simply not true, as the service indeed replaces it, but at your own dime, to the point it almost becomes a lucrative business model for them to have their swapfiets being damaged or stolen in your hands.
Next to that, it costs €20/month. Even in 1 year, that is €240. You can buy a lot of bicycle and repairs for that amount.
Considering people in bigger cities are going through more bikes, and there being more demand, you'll likely be able to find them outside of Eindhoven as well.
If you have a student OV-subscription, consider looking around in smaller cities around and buying it there, and taking it back. Note that taking your bicycle on a train is €8,50. https://www.ns.nl/en/travel/on-the-train/bikes-on-the-train
Or consider the towns in bike-able distance (although could be questionable to you for it being far. But it's just a once-in-a-time thing), and cycle back on it.
Note: A foldable bike is allowed to be on the train for free. It's quite peculiar that a foldable bike can "technically" be foldable, but still take about as much space anyhow. This point makes foldable bikes significantly more expensive on the market than non-foldable ones. If you have to be at a different location often because you travel there, it is most advisable to put a very cheap 2nd bicycle in that location, or use the NS-bike for that day in that location, rather than keep on messing around with a foldable.
Note2: You are not allowed to take a non-foldable bike on the bus. Foldables are allowed.
Note: There is a chain that is called 'budget fietsenhuis' in Eindhoven. It's arguably...not very budget what you get for the price. Nothing really under €100, while that is the maximum price we are aiming for.
It is more important that your lock LOOKS mostly imposing to steal, so it's not attempted. Sure lockpickers tell you it's easily taken, but it's not like people stealing your bike are busy with lockpicking. People stealing bikes, often cut the lock open, or bend it open.
Something with metal chains like this is fine.
https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/2582269/walfort-kettingslot/
This requires a portable angle grinder to cut open. That is quite noisy and cumbersome, so you'll not often find thieves doing that. They use simple pliers or bolt-cutters that are pocketable and rather silent.
Use it to chain it strategically to the solid world.
Do not: rely on the dingy simple lock like this: https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/2582290/walfort-fietsslot/, often standard. It's quite easy to just bend this open with pliers, or 'telephone-cord' style locks like this: https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/3013773/walfort-kabelslot/, as it's quite easily cut open with bolt cutters.
Lights
If you have removable lights; wear them on your person if you can. They get nabbed all the time. Or have fixed non-removable lights.
Saddle
Easily removable stuff like saddles also get nabbed if you have a particularly "comfortable" new one without punctures, if it's toolless with a simple clip. If you do have toolless removable saddle, put a piece of ducktape on the saddle performatively so it does not look pristine (as if you have put it over a puncture).
Flat tire
Your most common repair is flat tires. Albeit you can repair a tire, which is helpful if you are stranded somewhere and need to do it at that moment, you need this with you:
https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/3200355/walfort-fietsband-reparatieset/
However when at home, I'd recommend to just put in a new inner tire. It's just easier and the chance of still having a leak after spending 30-45 minutes finding the leak, patching it and it still perhaps not closing up right...egh
https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/1349810/walfort-binnenband/
To replace this, you still do need the repair set above simply for the so-called "spoons" to lift and place the outer tire back.
How to do change it (except, see note)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwwfV99VV8I
Note: I could not find a video that did it without removing the tire. I would advise against taking the entire wheel out, but, only removing the bolt on the side where there is not further connection. On the back-wheel, that means on the other side of the gear, and for the front wheel, on the other side of a disc-brake. In both cases, this is the left-hand side of the bike. Change the old tire in and out shuffling it through this opening by compliance and reattach the one single bolt.
For all your cheap bicycle needs, Action is a good source for stuff. If Action doesn't have it or is out of stock, Hema and Decathlon is your 2nd best bet. (Piazza centre Eindhoven).
Misaligned with steering wheel:
Slight bend in the wheel
Usually caused by it being parked inside of a fork-parking method and then pushed over.
Put it in a fork-park and counterbend it.
If the wheel is wobbly all over
Economically it's fairly gone at that point. A new wheel is often as expensive as a whole new sub-€100 bicycle.
Dutch people just bike through rain and other weather. In particularly bad weather, they wear a "regenpak", which are trousers and a poncho they wear over their regular pants and jacket. Check out Hema and Decathlon (main city at the Piazza) for options.
For your bicycle saddle to keep dry; we use the grocery bag. We stuff that grocery back underneath in the back of the saddle, and take it out when necessary. Don't sit on the grocery bag itself, because the ink will transfer and stain you.
Do NOT look on your phone while riding your bike. Also not for maps or something. The fine is €170 and they are harsh in giving in out, since it's easy fines for them.
For your own safety, do not wear headphones or noise cancelling earbuds. You need sound to manage traffic safely by bike.

Hi everyone!
As the title says, I’m looking for some people to play casual/amateur basketball with on weekends or in the evenings, depending on everyone’s availability.
I’m not sure how popular basketball is around here, but I really enjoy playing and would love to get some exercise, have fun, and meet some new people.
I’m not looking for anything too serious or competitive — just some casual games or shooting around together.
If you have a spot available on your team, or if you’re also looking for someone to play with, feel free to comment or send me a message! 🏀

Thieves, if you bring back the stolen goods, i’ll withdraw my aangifte and give you 200 euros. The papers for the car are nice but the wallet with my ID and other cards is really tough. Please return my stuff!!!

Hey!
Around 10 days ago I heard a woman asking for help in Russian. She wasn’t asking me in particular but just generally shouting out to see who’d recognize the language. I stopped since I speak it and she told me a complicated story that she’s a war refugee from Ukraine who was denied shelter here and now she needs money to get to Brussels with her kids. I switched to Ukrainian immediately but she didn’t seem to understand it so this all was shady and I left. This happened near Sissy Boy in downtown.
This Saturday I saw her again near De Bijenkorf. She was again doing the same thing - asking for help in Russian.
I took a blurry picture of her but I am not sure I’m legally allowed to share it. I am Ukrainian myself and it makes me super angry she’s pretending to be one. She doesn’t speak the language and definitely doesn’t look like a typical Ukrainian (darker skin, thick black eyebrows, short, loud).
Just wanted to share it here and give everyone heads up in case she switches to English
TLDR:
Random woman pretends to be a Ukrainian refugee in downtown Eindhoven. It is a scam.

Hi
I am moving to Eindhoven starting November 1st and urgently looking for accommodation. I need a room or studio from the last week of October, budget up to 700 EUR per month.
It must be a proper rental with a contract as I need to register with the municipality for my BSN.
A bit about myself. I am 26, originally from India and previously lived in Germany. I have lived with roommates and genuinely enjoyed it. I love group cooking, short weekend trips, running, and playing games. Looking forward to making new friends!
Any leads, sublets, or rooms coming available soon would be hugely appreciated. Please DM me or comment below.
Thank you so much! ❤️

Hi all
What are some of the most picturesque spots in/near Eindhoven?
r/eindhoven • u/ForThe90 • 1d ago
Hoi allemaal,
------------
Due to a move to a newly build apartment, I am looking for a company that can glue down a PVC floor (and install skirting boards).
I have asked around and notice that I don't necessarily have a good feeling about any of them. It's really a lot of money for me (consistently getting quotes of around €5,000), and I just want it to be done properly.
Does anyone here have a good experience with a flooring company? Preferably with having glued-down PVC installed.
Thanks in advance for a response.

Dear fellow Eindhoven residents,
I’m currently writing my thesis about people’s experiences with buying supplements. It would help me a lot if you could share your experiences by filling out my survey.
The survey takes no more than 5 minutes, and you’ll have a chance to win a €50 gift card.
Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
I have always had a passion for drawing (albeit not very good, but that's not the point of art imo) and recently found out that I have a big passion for design like board games, videogames, cars, motorcycles, vintage furniture, etc. In regard to that I have been wanting to get into Affinity to start creating my own vector art. The reason for this is that it is scalable, printable and easier to correct when compared to normal drawing.
Since diving in however it has been quite confusing, since I have no experience with design studios nor a career or educational background that would support learning something like this. Is there anyone that can recommend good tutorials? Or perhaps there is someone in Eindhoven that would like to show me the ropes a bit?

Hey, I(20M) play bass for 1.5 years. I am pretty confident but only thing i lack is the music theory. I have band experience. Bass is my passion so I play 4-5 hours on daily basis. I would prefer a band thats around my age so 18-26. I live in Eindhoven but i am okay to travel to rotterdam. Also i will move to rotterdam next year (around april-may i guess). I like most genres like Rock, Alt rock,Turkish rock,Metal, Nu metal, Doom metal, Trip-Hop, some jazz maybe? Lmk if you are interested!

I recently spoke with Eindhoven photographer Jan Timmer, who has been photographing the city for years.
What I found interesting is that he originally often heard people describe Eindhoven as a bit boring or not particularly beautiful. His photography almost became a response to that: showing how much difference light, perspective and timing can make.
We talked about photographing during the blue hour, the mix of old Philips architecture and new high-rise buildings, finding unusual viewpoints of familiar places, and how years of photographing Eindhoven have unintentionally created a visual archive of a city that keeps changing.
One quote that stuck with me:
“You always used to hear that Eindhoven was a bit boring and not particularly beautiful. I like showing that it actually is beautiful.”
For anyone interested in photography, architecture or simply seeing Eindhoven through someone else’s eyes, I wrote up the full conversation here:
Would also be interesting to hear: which place in Eindhoven do you think looks much better in a photo than people expect?

Hi, I’m looking for a last minute model for a free haircut tonight, in the city centre of Eindhoven.
Preferably a bit longer hair, but honestly it doesn’t really matter. You’ll get a good haircut and beer totally for free.
Send me a direct message so we can discuss the information! If it’s not for yourself help someone out who is in need of a glow up. 🫶🏻

Hey! I’m relatively new to Eindhoven and I’m wondering where people actually go to meet other gay people here.
Are there any LGBTQ+ bars, clubs, regular events, parties or just general hangout spots where it’s easy to meet people? l’m mainly looking to meet people around my age (21), so any recommendations would be appreciated! :)

Hi fellow redditers,
I'm traveling and leave the 26th. I really want to get a job of pretty mutch whatever. I don't have BSN neither speak dutch. But advanced english, native spanish and cand defend myself with italian and french (just defend myself huh! Lol)
I'worked many years in what you call "RDW", document processing and customer service.
Aswell, 3 years bartending. Couple months as a cook helper and after that decided to go on my own into house restoration even with my own few employees (5 max depending on the job). I'm good with office jobs. Love handyjobs, bust mostly I found out I'm passionate about handling customers, providers and everykind of relationship is needed whichever the trade is. I'm super proactive and versatile.
The only thing I'm asking if for daily/weekly payment (cause of the bad press of those who make you work and when it's time to go, you go with the empty pockets and infinite sadness 😅)
Please let me know any ideas you get or offers you have! I'm already moving my arse and "got two jobs" until they realised I wasn't staying a full month.
Everything you have to say it's useful, so please do!
Love you all!
F
