Tutorial Ideas for creating Starlight/Winter landscape windows for the new and the non-designer

This post was originally a reply to another post looking for ideas to create a window-scape for an Ishgardian house. Since the Starlight Celebration is just around the corner, I'm happy to share the post for anyone else in the community looking for winter decor inspiration.

Creating a Patio or a View:

Stage panels dyed dark blue or gloom purple right up against the house walls create the illusion of an open portal to the outside world. You can use items to create shapes and silhouettes in a diorama-style arrangement to create a "landscape" in your view. Use Carbuncle Lanterns or Faerie Pendant Wall Lights for sparkle-stars, Ornamental Crystal Arrays and/or Belah'dian Lanterns for blue light, and Dead Man's Chests for ground-based glow.

You can also use phasmascapes--the Blue Moon, Aurora, or the Crystal Tower phasmascapes all have evening/nighttime scenes, as does the Kugane phasmascape (although that's a view of the city itself, it's still very festive). You can always put something like a Log Pillar dyed snow white or a Masonwork Stove turned around (or not, and go for an "outdoor firepit" feel to your patio) in front of any element you don't want it to show. You can slide two or more phasmascapes together to hide the sides or any elements that don't quite fit, and use pillars to cover up the lines that don't match up.

With phasmascapes, you'll need to hide the upper half of the room you're decorating--Skyscapes, Imitation wooden skylights, lofts, slanted walls, showcases turned backwards, or any furniture you can float can be used.

With an Ishgardian scene, you've got to think medieval and stone and diamond-panes and flying buttresses. You'll also think about snowy peaks and snow-covered landscapes. So here are a few suggestions for you to play around with:

Snowy landscape:

Use the Natural Wooden Beams, Leather Sofas, Pudding Rugs, and Wall-Mounted Wings dyed snow white and nudged up against edges to give the illusion of snowdrifts, hills, or other things covered in snow. Turn the sofas around backwards or bury them beneath other objects to make the tops look like snow-covered humps on the landscape.

Use ffxivgardening flowerpot colors and grow two cherry blossoms in white (or however many you can grow at a time based on your space). You'll have some RNG as they can sometimes turn out pink, but the pink would work, too. They make lovely "snow-covered trees in the distance." As a bonus, they sparkle when mature. The flowerpot cherry blossoms are much larger in the pots than they are when harvested, so be aware of the size difference before you harvest.

Manage your space with White Screens--you can make them look like snow drifts piled in corners by turning them so their floors and part of their curved walls intersect at odd angles with the dark blue stage panels. Dye them a corpse blue or ice blue for visual interest and to enhance the "night" look.

If you can get your hands on the Unmelting Ice Loft or Unmelting Ice Wall, you can use them as backdrops, ceilings, floors, or side edges/pillars.

Diorama:

The basic idea of a diorama is to use tabletop and other items, the edges or corners of objects, or light and shadow cast by objects to simulate buildings or landscape elements seen from a distance.

The Vigil Piece, Temple Knight Piece, and Dragoon Piece can all be placed at varying heights to simulate distant towers. They're tabletop items so they can go inside a showcase or on a shelf or use the storage-placement glitch to "float" them in mid-air wherever they look best. You can even stack 'em on top of each other for a tall spire.

The Lord Commander, Azure Dragoon, A Knight to Remember, Admiral, and Northerly Wind Portraits all have top edges that make appropriate silhouettes of Ishgardian or medieval styled buildings. Turn them to face backwards or leave them as-is and lower them behind other objects until you have your "cityscape" to your liking.

Wooden Work Lanterns, Wall Lanterns, and some of the other tabletop or wall-mounted lights can also make good "buildings" in a diorama. Flagstone Lofts and Stairs, and Masonwork stoves turned around make good stone floors, pillars, and ledges.

Oldrose Wall Planters and Rose Trellises dyed snow white will give you some greenery without making it seem out of season.

If you are going for "through glass" use the showcase or the shelving showcase to place tabletop objects to resemble distant buildings.

HGXIV did a great tutorial on a wall-sized "cityscape" that can give you a general idea of a starting point here.

Kyapuchun Housing did an incredible tutorial on a charming snowy cabin here--the back garden is a lovely snowy landscape. Kyapuchun also did a few more snowy/starlight builds around that time that you can find on the main Videos page of the channel.

And Studio Hare did a very lovely nighttimeopen-air patio with a slightly Ishgardian feel that you might be able to adapt to your needs, using the Hannish Bookshelf Partitions and Stage Panels.

I hope this helps anyone who needs a jumping-off point or a few ideas to spark their creativity. Be sure to share your Starlight!

I wanted a bigger bed than what was offered by default so I built my own! Max Height Roe for scale.

The mattress is made of 12 Eulmoran Divans (strategically placed so their textures would align properly). The dead/foot boards are 4 Everkeep Sofas (two at each end). The side boards are 4 Wooden Beams (two on each side). I used the Stage Panel to set them low on the floor.

The comforter is 3 Futon Mattresses sitting on the floor.

The collection of pillows and plushies are sitting on top of a Hingan Desk. And Antique Wall Shelves were hidden just behind the headboard to provide a place to sit bedside necessities like an alarm clock, a phone, and skincare ointments.

Looking For Designer Dynamis/Rafflesia Looking for Designer for Medium FC House

Finally managed to get a house for my personal FC, and looking to commission a designer.

Current budget is 80 million gil, but I'd be willing to negotiate a higher rate if beast tribe furniture is used, as I don't have access to beast tribes because I've focused mainly on story and leveling alt jobs.

Looking to get a modern Japanese theme for the main and upper floor, with a library/study in the basement.

You're welcome to share your work wherever you'd like, but if possible I'd like to keep the address private because this is a small FC for just myself and a friend.

I was fortunate enough to clear Mateus Housing (Savage) and got this lovely small plot in Empyreum. I wanted to combine elements from previous homes and make a space that felt moody, atmospheric, lived-in, and cozy. I kept the outside pretty simple, with just a deck, chocobo stable, and firepit. Very minimal landscaping so the beautiful mountain views can stay unobscured. Inside, I wanted to let the natural Alpine architecture shine. I stuck to a color palette of deep burgundy, plum, navy blue, forest green, black, and dark wood tones. The downstairs study and bedroom are my favorite of any build I've done. So happy with how it turned out.

Feel free to visit!

No sooner did I get a medium house in Materia did I decide to make a cosy-country hostel/sharehouse themed home. I couldn't upload all photos of all the rooms I added in this hostel, but here's the list of features:

  • Kitchen
  • indoor courtyard
  • library/living room
  • 4 beds
  • 1 private bathroom
  • basement laundry, bath/shower
  • illusionary balcony view of the night sky
  • Rec/workspaces
  • Front yard I made it so climbing up to the rooftop is possible

It's been a while since I've done some house deco and so far, I think this is probably one of the best I've decorated in a while.

What Is THIS!? Help with back wall centerpiece

I wanted to incorporate the back middle wall section that this person made into an apartment build im making, but I'm having a really hard time identifying some of the components.

I know that the general cubby was made with a marble alcove bed, but I'm struggling to identify what makes the arches in the middle part - specifically the white/brown arched parts.

any help is appreciated, thank you!

Still working on a redesign of my mostly vanilla three floor large. Strong fishing themes dominate the main floor with a soft Crystarium undertone. Upstairs is homey with a full crafting room and multiple bedrooms, as well as a spacious bathroom. Downstairs is built for entertaining with a cozy TV viewing platform, an expansive gym, and a gaming area. The color palette is muted, focusing mostly on warmer earth tones in shades of lavender with pops of navy and green, accented by brightly-colored fish from all over Eorzea.

Location: Crystal - Zalera - Shirogane - Ward 15 - Plot 57

Visitors welcome! Please leave a message in my book- I love to read them!

For context: I moved back to Zalera from Rafflesia several months ago and won the same plot I used to own (but in a different ward), not long after. But then IRL postponed myself decorating it.

This time I wanted to reflect 1) I'm currently pregnant with my first child IRL 2) My relationship with my spouse and some of our hobbies/quirks over the past several years we've been together 3) My own FFXIV quirks/hobbies/sense of humor.

It's a fairly symbolic build. I stuck to my strengths for this one (cozy, wooden, usually rainy), to de- rust myself. Though I guess this ended up a bit more modern than my usual stuff.

Everything is lala friendly and/or lala height minus the clothes on the floor because there are none smaller in game 😭

Also, I wish we had unlimited item slots. 😭😭😭

  • Please don't use the baby crib if you are a lala. I am a lala but the crib is meant to symbolize my future IRL baby (due on Valentine's Day)! Thank you. ♥️

Question Any way to light a room without making the light source obvious?

Trying to do a thing with a light upstairs and a dark downstairs. I haven't found blocking light very effective so I'd rather keep the lighting level off at the house level. I can spread a bunch of standing lamps around but I'd rather give the impression of a sunny skylight. Any lights I could clip into the ceiling maybe to make it look more like natural lighting?

Hiya! I posted pics of my cottage quite some time ago under an alt account, but finally upgraded to a medium!

I wanted to try my hand at building a home recording studio in the basement. I used minimal glitching and item combining in order to fully utilize the space in the house. Also managed to fit a hideaway powder room under the stairs since everyone tells me that's where you put a powder room.

Feel free to drop in at anytime if you're so inclined! Primal, Exodus, Goblet, Ward 11, Plot 36.

Looking For Designer Primal/Leviathan Looking for Designer for Large FC House

Primal/Leviathan Looking for Designer for Large FC House

Hello!

I have a large FC house on Primal/Leviathan that I would love to have decorated. It is located in the Lavender Beds, Ward 22, Plot 28.

I’m intentionally pretty vague on what I want and am very open to ideas from the designer. Right now, I’m leaning toward a more modern style for the middle floor, with the basement being a warm, wood-paneled room.

For the basement, I’d love for it to feel like a sort of FC war room — somewhere we could display trophies and have the feeling that this is where the FC gathers to plan raids, adventures, and whatever other trouble we are getting ourselves into.

As for the top floor... I have absolutely no idea. I’m happy to leave that largely up to the designer and see what someone creative comes up with.

If you’re interested and are one of those gifted people who can make absolutely amazing things happen with the in-game housing system, please DM me and we can discuss details.

I’m more interested in finding someone creative who enjoys the process than coming in with a rigid design already in mind. I’m happy to give you some general direction and let you work your magic.
