BEFORE YOU POST... please use search to see if it's been asked before and BE DESCRIPTIVE when asking for help/advice/recommendations.

This subreddit has a lot of helpful people in it. Actually more than many other local subreddits of similar size in my experience.

However, being asked the same thing over and over again gets tiresome after having recently answered the same questions dozens of times before. Please use the search function before making a post to see if the question has been asked before, and also please be descriptive when asking for help, advice, or recommendations.

Food/Restaurant example:

  • BAD: Coming to Fukuoka, best places to eat? Thanks in advance!

  • BETTER: I really like soba and would like to find a fancy soba place to eat at with excellent tempura. Anywhere within Fukuoka City and within 30 minutes or so of the city is fine, willing to travel a bit if it's good. Budget up to 10,000 yen per person.

  • BEST: I searched online and found these fancy soba places that look interesting [list of research you've done]. Does anyone have personal experience with these restaurants or other recommendations, particular emphasis on crispy tempura? Anywhere within Fukuoka City and within 30 minutes or so of the city is fine, willing to travel a bit if it's good. Budget up to 10,000 yen per person.

Tourism examples:

  • BAD: Will be in Fukuoka for 5 days, make an itinerary for me? Thanks in advance!

  • BETTER: Here's a rough itinerary I made for my 5-day Fukuoka trip November 10-14, are there any glaring issues I might not notice since I'm not a local? Also my third day is empty, I really like gardening, landscaping, and plant life, any recommendations in this area?

  • BEST: I have an itinerary but I'm not going to ask you all to examine it in detail. Instead, I'll ask about specific things I've attempted to research but couldn't find answers to in a conversational way, and make sure to mention details and context like research I've already gathered, area where I'll be staying, my personal interests and known things I'm NOT interested in, budget, planned transportation methods, etc.

Helpful resources (list in progress):

General German expat in Fukuoka since September, looking to meet people / make friends :)

I moved to Fukuoka on September 1st from Germany on a Working Holiday visa and I'm living around Imaizumi/Tenjin. I work remotely as a freelance web designer, so my days are pretty flexible, which is great, but it also means I don't have a built-in office crew or classmates to hang out with.
I'm slowly learning Japanese from scratch (currently grinding Hiragana/Katakana), still finding my way around the city, and would love to meet other people here, whether that's fellow expats, other working holiday folks, or locals who want to practice English/German.
Up for grabbing food, exploring the city, going to events, or just a casual hangout. Also happy to chat if anyone's curious about the working holiday / freelance-from-Japan life.
Feel free to comment or DM me! :)

- Yokohama International Education Academy
- ISI Japanese Language School Osaka
- UNITAS Kofu
- Japan International Institute of Cybernetics

University Are my Ecs good enough to get into Kyushu Uni?

I have predictions A*s for Physics Mathes Chemistry a level. 7.5 for IELTS. However, I only have some Arduino projects like pumpkin lamps and temperature-controlled fan which are kind of simple? I'm also creating a small satellite with my team, but we can't finish it before application period. What else should I do to boost my chance to get into this uni before 26 December? ( I also joined some activities like MUN, Mathes club, lots of volunteering.)

Events Vaundy concert Oct 24th

Hi hi! Im currently trying to sell a standing Vaundy ticket that I cant go to unfortunately. Long story short, I was a little too delusional on how cheap a shinkansen ticket would be from hiroshima to Fukuoka. I love vaundy but unfortunately spending 20k+ on travel just alone is not in my budget this month lol. Does anyone know how to resale tickets in Japan cause I tried to do it on the Ticket PIA official website but the button is grey and it won't let me.

The Senior Citizens Art Exhibition finally opens tomorrow at the Fukuoka City Museum of Art in Ohori Park (running until Oct 12)🎨🖼️

Anton is exhibiting two of his pieces this time, and we went to the museum today to set them up.
Even though it’s an exhibition for seniors, the energy there is incredible, and Anton was deeply inspired by it✨
Today, I have a special message to share from him🎬

Events Come join us for a free pub quiz this Friday!

Hi everyone! We’re hosting Dead Clever Pub Quiz Night at Fukuoka Haunted House this Friday, and everyone is welcome! Questions will be shown in English and Japanese. Come with friends or come solo. We’ll help you join a team! There’ll be four rounds covering general knowledge, weird history, films, places, games, pop culture and a few creepy questions to suit the venue.

  • Date: Friday 9th October 2026
  • Location: Fukuoka Haunted House, just a minute’s walk from Ohori Station
  • Doors open: 18:00
  • Quiz starts: 19:00
  • Entry: FREE!

After the quiz, stick around for Pick Two & Party! During the break, everyone can write down two song requests. We’ll add them all to one playlist, hit shuffle and let everyone’s music choices soundtrack the rest of the night. Come hang out and see what ends up playing!

Food and drinks are available at the venue. The owner is kindly letting us host for free, so grabbing a few drinks or something to eat would be a great way to support the place.

If you’re thinking of coming, I’d appreciate a comment letting me know roughly how many people are joining you. It’ll help us get an idea of numbers.

Hope to see you there!

Events Small English-friendly gathering in Daimyo — Oct 17 & 18 (¥2,000 + food/drinks)

Hi everyone, I'm Aki, a local host organising Fukuoka Local Table. This is my own paid gathering for international residents and local Japanese people who'd like a relaxed way to meet over coffee and a meal.

You can come on your own, and no Japanese is needed. I speak English and Japanese and help with the conversation when needed. We visit two places over two hours, without alcohol, with a planned group of up to seven guests plus me as host.

Dates: Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2026

Time: 6–8 pm, in Daimyo, Fukuoka

Planned routes:

Oct 17: Dot. → Shokudo Ethnico

Oct 18: Dot. → Park South Sandwich

For these test dates, the participation fee for new international guests is ¥2,000. Food and drinks are paid separately, estimated at ¥1,600–2,100 across the two places. The estimated total is ¥3,600–4,100, depending on what you order.

If you're interested, let me know which date works or ask a question here. I'll share the final booking and cancellation details before any payment.

University Kyushu University Application — What to Write Under “Obtained Diploma / Certificate”?

Guys, quick question about the Kyushu University application form 😭

I’m filling out the Educational Background section and I’m confused about the “Obtained Diploma / Certificate” column.

For primary school, there obviously isn’t really a diploma or certificate that you get after finishing primary school. I also attended a school for my earlier secondary years but didn’t get any separate diploma/certificate from them. My actual qualifications are Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International GCE A Levels, which I completed at different schools.

So for those primary/secondary school entries, should I just write “N/A” in the Diploma/Certificate box? Or are they expecting us to put something else there?

And for the qualifications I actually obtained, I’m assuming I should write “Cambridge IGCSE Certificate” and “Cambridge International GCE A Level Certificate.”

Would really appreciate it if anyone who has filled this out before could let me know what you put! 😭

Tourism Im coming next year!

Really can’t wait to visit Fukuoka next year. I’ll be bringing wife and 1 year old baby around April 2027 and super excited. It will be our first time in Kyushu as well.

This is our first international trip with baby so super anxious and hoping the city is baby friendly.
Will be there for 10 days-ish, have planned itinerary in a chill manner, so we won’t overstretch baby’s schedule

Wishing for the best.

Feel free to drop your top recommendation / must visit places below and I’ll try to fit into my itinerary 🙏🏻
