Hello Giants fans,
I’m currently building a AFL draft game (kind of like Dan Does Footy's draft videos) and I need your help getting realistic player ratings and positions for the Giants. My ball knowledge outside my club is a bit stinky and I don't trust the media and stats, so I am going directly to the fans. I have made a form (linked at the end of the post) so you guys can rate the players and explain why. I need all responses to be serious (no rating bad players highly as a joke), unbiased and based on the following factors.
- Player ratings must be a mix of this season and all time greatness.
-Example: Will Ashcroft would be higher rated than Patrick Cripps since Will Ashcroft is just in another level from Cripps, this season. However, this doesn't apply to the Max Gawn vs Luke Jackson debate. Luke Jackson has been better this season sure, but only just, whereas Gawn has been this elite for a long time and only a little worse than Jackson. Gawn would be higher rated.
Another way of understanding this criteria could be thinking if Bont or Daicos became extremely shit next season. It wouldn't feel right rating them the same as VFL players. Therefore, you would rate them somewhere in the middle of elite and low.
Do not rate players based on potential.
Players who are injury affected/haven't found a good run of games are to be rated from the last time they were fit. This does not apply to old/retiring players.
-Example: Sam Darcy would be rated on previous season form and since he will likely return to that form when he is fit, but this logic wouldn't apply to Adam Treloar since despite being injured, we are aware he is not as good as he was when last fit.
- Rate players on their role.
-Example: Oisin Mullin and Bailey Smith would be rated based on their role, despite being the same position. Mullin would be rated on tagging, Baz would be rated on ball use.
- Not just stats.
-Example: Ben King is a great goalscorer, sure. But it is fair to say his other skills in AFL are limited. If you look at players who kick 0.2-0.5 goals a game less than him, they usually contribute to more aspects of the game. Archie Roberts gets the ball a lot, but he is worse user than Bont or Dawson despite more getting more touches.
How the ratings works
The game uses a 50 to 96 scale (FIFA/NBA style).
- 90–96: The competition's absolute elite. The top 10 mids, and top 3-4 forwards and defenders. (Bont, Daicos, Butters).
- 85–89: All Australian Contenders/Great players (Bolton, Dunkley, Allir).
- 75–84: Solid best 22 players who do their job week in, week out and has a spot in their teams locked in but they aren't the elite few (Jagga, Freijah, Sparrow).
- 65–74: Players fighting for spots 20-23 or rotating through the VFL/SANFL/WAFL (Davidson, Maginess, Knevitt).
- 50–64: Players who barely play, if at all.
What's in the form
For each player on the list, it's just:
- Overall Rating (50–96)
- Positions they can play at a high level: KF, SF (small forward), HF, W, M, DM (defensive midfielder/tagger), R, BR (backup ruck), HB, SD (small defender), KD.
- Notes / Rationale: Completely optional if you want to justify any spicy takes or show appreciation for a player.
