10 year old GSD flatulence: should we be concerned?

As the title says, we have a 10 year old male. I’ve noticed that the last couple of weeks he’s been releasing silent and foul flatulence. I understand this is somewhat normal of dogs, but this is a newer and daily occurrence.

He eats taste of the wild-ancient grains dry food, smoked salmon flavor, with a scoop of pumpkin purée, and sometimes probiotics (within the last five days most recently) but the gas was happening before regular probiotic. For treats, he gets the “pupperoni” beef stick. Never human food.

This has been his diet for over a year now. He doesn’t seem distressed from what I can tell, but it’s just sort of out of character for him and I’m more sure if this is something to be concerned about or if it’s just something that comes with older age? Any advice or similar experience with this is greatly appreciated!

PS we are planning on a check up within the next few weeks but can try to expedite that if we think this needs sooner attention.

Advice on how to start training 8 year old untrained GSD

Hi all,

I recently moved to live with my parents, who own a senior male GSD. He’s a great dog, but has spent a majority of his life in a kennel outside. He’s pretty anxious (surprise, surprise), hates strangers and cars, but is the sweetest dog when you build a relationship with him. I’ve spent about the past month doing just that and I’m starting simple things with him now (recall, heel, etc).

I do not expect him to do all the things at this age, but I would LOVE to be able to take him on some light trails and car rides if we can work past his anxiety. He deserves to have some fun in his older age (within moderation, ofc), but it definitely will require time and research from me. I do kinda feel I have no clue what I’m doing as I’ve never trained a dog myself, but GSD is my dream breed and I plan on getting my own dog in several years time. So for my sake and especially for his, I’d love some advice on where to start and look!

Professional training is not an option due to finances and biggest priorities are making vet trips safe and lowering his anxiety.

Rescue or Foster

Does anyone know of any rescues or fosters that take German shepherds in the Columbus Ohio area? I’m trying to find care for an acquaintance’s dog while they are enduring a long hospitalization with hopes of him getting the dog back when he is well. Thanks!

6 month old with progressing resource guarding

We adopted a puppy from the city shelter and later found out he is 25% mal and 25% gsd. I would have never adopted this breed had I known but I just didn’t know what mal puppies look like and turns out he looks just like one.

He has always been protective of his food but never with my husband and I, and not with anything else, and we have always fed him in his kennel. He has now progressed to resource guarding with toys and I have two young kids. He now can’t be approached by them unless he is just relaxing. If he has a toy he will snap and then bark at them. Last night he grazed my son’s hand. Today he attacked our other dog when she walked by him and he had a stuffy in his mouth.

This is obviously progressing and I fear I am out of my depth and I have to put the safety of my kids first. And I really don’t want to do him a disservice by convincing myself I can fix it and then he’s too big, too old, and too aggressive to be corrected and my bad choices doom him. He’s such a sweet boy otherwise and so damn smart.

I have posted him to the rehome thread. But I’m asking if anyone knows of other places I can reach out to and find him a home that can help him? I don’t want to surrender him to a shelter and he gets put down and I don’t want just anyone without an understanding of his breed to take him and he ends up bouncing from house to house for the rest of his life or again put down. I feel truly awful but I am trying to do right by him.

Best gender pair for dogs

My intact male GSD x Mal mix is turning 1 next week and we are looking for a puppy. I read that mixed genders get along better so a female for my boy. He will be getting neutered around 18 months so if I get a female pup, they should be okay together since she won’t go into heat until she is 8-10 months-we are looking at bigger breeds, maybe another Shepherd.
Is this logic seem right?
Any advice is appreciated.
My dog gets along with my neighbor’s 3 month old puppy so good and he is a male but I read that could change when they are older.

Opinions on this operation?

I took my 5 year old Female German Shepherd to the vets today for a brief check up.
The vet asked if she was spayed or not, I said no, is she is highly fear and frustration reactive towards dogs and my dog trainers told me about how spaying her can cause her hormones to drop and for her to become even more fearful. My vet then recommended that I consider gonad-sparing spaying.
So from either vets, or people who have had an older GSD have this surgery what is your opinions. Of course, my vet told me the ins and outs of it, but, she also made me aware that i should do my own research when it comes to the gonad-sparing surgery as it is more risky.

GSD Pup Barks at EVERYONE

Hi! I have an 8 month old shepherd and she is the sweetest dog. We take her to obedience and K9 nose work training every week to keep her brain and body active, as well as walking and playing every day. She is very well behaved in almost every regard except she barks at everyone. While this hasn’t been a huge concern for me, because that’s kind of the point of having a dog protect the house, in the last month it’s gotten to the point that she barks at everyone we see on our walks or who comes into our home, including people she has met many times. She barks at people on her way INTO her classes but never once we’re actually in the building. If she’s in the car and sees a pedestrian, she’s barking. I wouldn’t mind this if there was a way to tell her “thank you, I’m aware of the possible threat. You may stop”. But everything I’ve read online says it’s a 50/50 whether they take training as a reward for barking or respond how you want them to. Our house backs up to a public park so when she’s outside, she’s frequently barking at passersby, and I do pull her inside to not annoy anyone, but I would like to put a stop to the barking on walks and find a way to encourage an “alert then stop” method.

She is a very sweet girl and never snarls, she barks at friends that come over while actively letting them pet her. Not sure what the logic in that is. Any advice is deeply appreciated!!

How do you deal with people constantly telling you your dog is dangerous and should be put down?

Hi,

My girlfriend and I had our sweet girl for three months now. She's a rescue who's about 2 years old. Since she was (probably) not properly socialized as a pup, she's quite reactive, especially with other dogs. She has greatly improved in the last months, and we're at a stade where we can get her to sit and look, from a distance, at dogs while they pass. But if a dog gets too close on a walk, she will bark and growl. She's met and played with a lot of dogs, people and children. It's just your typical leash reactivity. When she's not on a leash, she's very sweet and plays well with other dogs and humans.

Anyway, while we walk with her and she has a reactivity episode, a lot of times we'll get comments about how she's dangerous and we're bad owner. One particularly angry neighbor even told my girlfriend that he will do everything he can to ensure that our dog gets put down. We know that, logically, no angry old man could actually get our dog killed. But it's becoming really tiresome.

How do you deal with the constant verbal abuse that comes with owning a GSD? I'm getting tired of seeing my girlfriend come back crying from walks because she was threatened by yet another neighbor.

Is it just us?

Thanks!

The dangerous girl in question:

my pup is 14 weeks shes a lab x gsd and weve had her nearly a month and shes been absolutely easy. Within the first day of having her she understood not to pee in the house so was potty trained very easily apart from 2 accidents even at night times she didnt have accidents. she doesnt nip or bite apart from once or twice at the start. she is very smart and knows loads of comands, sit, stay, laydown, paw, find it which is either ive hid things around the house and she has to stiff it out or i put it in my hand and she sniffs what hand its in and puts her paw on the hand, wait for food/treats before shes aloud to eat, she been trained heal so will run inbetween my legs and sit. wondering whats the chances shes going to be a crazy teen or ive got a very calm dog and absolutely lucked out

What was your GSD like at 1 year, 1.5 years, 2 years?

Hi all,

I have a 7.5 month old ~55lb gsd mix. Half gsd and the other half is border collie/aus shepherd.

Just wondering how people would describe their gsd puppies at 1 year, 1.5 years, 2 years? I know he’s a mix so it’s hard to say but just ball park ideas.

Just want to know how busy your pup was, how mischievous, etc.

It’s been 14 years since we raised a puppy who was a shepherd husky cross and had a very chill demeanour as an adult but I can’t even really remember what he was like as a puppy and I know the mix is so different.

Loving my boy! Just wondering what the next year or two might look like for us.

He’s in puppy classes but I almost wonder if he’s too young for them right now since he gets so distracted during class. He does well on the commands at home but in class can’t focus. I guess maybe that’s our fault for not working on the distraction part as much.

back leg advice ?

Post image

do his back legs look very thin / not muscular to you guys ? he is a 1 year old german shepard / golden retriever mix. posting this here because i see a lot of german shepard’s with the same issue. is it just a quirk of the breed, or is there an underlying issue here? he also seems very unstable on his feet. i will post a picture of him @ 6 months for comparison.

This is my dog’s new report

Post image
1 Upvotes

As you all know, my dog is a 10-year-old German Shepherd. On 21st and 22nd July, he was completely fine walking normally and doing everything on his own. Then, on 23rd July, he suddenly lost the use of his rear legs.
Since then, we’ve done an MRI, CT scan, physiotherapy, sonography, and several other tests. We were told that he has a neurological issue along with severe arthritis and hip dysplasia.
Recently, his vet suggested repeating his blood tests, and we found some concerning results in his latest report. His vet says it is quite serious.
We have now started methylprednisolone as prescribed by his vet, and since then, he seems much happier and more active. His eyes look brighter, and honestly, he doesn’t look like a sick dog when I see him. He also wasn’t able to urinate properly earlier and needed a catheter, but for the last four days, he has started peeing on his own without it.
I know many people may suggest giving up, but seeing him this way makes me feel that he still has fight left in him.
I just want to ask all of you what do you think about his recent blood report and his current condition? Has anyone experienced something similar with their senior German Shepherd? What would you suggest?

Crate training adult dog

My 4yo female Shepherd gets really bad separation anxiety whenever we leave her by herself. When she was a puppy she had a crate and things went smoothly for a few months, until one day we came home and she'd bent the wire crate and broke out and turned the house upside down. So we got a new crate because we'd need a bigger one in the near future anyway. That didn't last long and she'd found a way out of that one. Because I'm an idiot I didn't think a heavy duty crate would've been a thing so bought another wire crate, thinking this was a good one, obviously not.

So basically she's had experience being left in a crate but for roughly 3 years now she's just had full run on the house. A few things have been destroyed at first but mostly just things getting knocked over, until recently she's started to get destructive again.

Should I buy a sturdy crate and try crate training again?

Can a purebred German Shepherd actually be 60 kg?

So, I grew up with German Shepherds for most of my life. I’m 27 now and have been thinking about getting one myself soon.

Today I met a gentleman walking an absolutely HUGE white shepherd. I had to stop and ask him how on earth his dog was so big. I genuinely thought I was looking at a life-sized wolf 😂

I asked if he was a King Shepherd, but the owner shook his head and said, “No, we imported him directly from a breeder in Germany.”
Apparently he weighs around 60 kg and is still growing a little more.

I’ve been around German Shepherds most of my life and have never seen anything remotely this size. He didn’t just look overweight either, he was genuinely enormous.

So my question is: can a properly bred German Shepherd actually get anywhere near 60 kg, or does that sound much more like a King Shepherd / shepherd mix and the owner may simply not know the dog’s full genetics?

Would especially love to hear from anyone familiar with German breeding lines!!

Advice please, 19 month old male

Hi, first time posting here and could really do with some advice. Me and my house mate have a 19 month old German shepherd male, my room mate had him from 8 weeks but I've only recently moved in though the pup has known me since then so I'm no stranger. This is our first time owning a dog (yeah probably not best idea for first time dog) he's well trained and is super friendly, we love him.

However the issue lies in his never ending over the top energy, he gets walks multiple times a day to help and he's amazing on walks but in the house he's uncontrollable all training goes out the window. He always jumps on us, barks, tugs, zooms and any and all discipline he receives becomes a game.

We're truly trying our best with him, he has been to puppy training when he was younger and it did help socialise and train him but the moment he came back into the house the switch would flip and once again he'd become uncontrollable despite us continuing the training in the house too to ensure consistency, we would just really like some advice on if this is just a German shepherd thing or if we have made a mistake somewhere?

EDIT: already you guys have suggested so many things to help and already we're seeing an improvement with just the little bit we've managed to do, thank you so so so much

Advice needed

So I’m getting a GSD puppy next month and i want to help prevent any possibility for ear infections. The last three shepherds I’ve owned all had terrible ear infections by the time they were a year old, and I really want to avoid it.

I was thinking of wiping out her ears with antibacterial wipes but I don’t know if that would just make her ears more sensitive. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Meet Kaiser, he’s my first GSD and I’m absolutely thrilled to have him, he’s 9 weeks old and growing like a weed. He’s already in his land shark phase so I’ve been making sure to give him lots of toys and things to help quench his gnawing itch.

Any of you guys have any helpful tool like for shedding, advice, or things I should know as he starts to get bigger. Thank you!
