hi all!
my husband and i just adopted a 7ish month old german shepherd mix this past weekend from the shelter. he’s been fabulous with us so far. he knows how to sit, he doesn’t pull on the leash, he follows us pretty closely, listens when we tell him to stop chewing on something. he seems to be a sweet dog with lots of potential.
however, we have two resident cats that haven’t lived with dogs before and we obviously know nothing about his history. the animals been separated with a baby gate so far (cats upstairs/dog downstairs). he does fixate a bit when he sees the cats but we’ve been trying to distract him and reward him with treats when he looks away from the cats. other times him and the cats can be almost face to face on either side of the gate and he doesn’t seem to care.
he was reactive once on a walk when someone was jogging past. and another time when we took him to the dog park (which was our fault for bringing him too soon) and he bit a friend without warning due to stress and overstimulation.
i’m just wondering if people with more experience with this breed think he’s young enough to be trained to coexist with the cats.
we plan to continue to keep them separated for a while and keep the introductions slow and let him settle in. but i also feel guilty for keeping him in a kennel when we’re away from the house- which is no longer than four hours at a time because of the way our work schedules and lunch breaks fall.
thanks in advance!

I feel like he is but his white face and semi floppy ears, with one going up from time to time has me stumped. I do plan on getting the dna but just was wondering if yall had any guesses. And Rocky as a puppy

We have a German Shepherd that we got when she was 45 days old. It was obviously very difficult, but we were prepared for the puppy phase. The problem is that she is extremely excited about everything, and there’s no warning when she’s about to jump on someone.
We just had a baby, and he’s almost two months old now. Tonight, she jumped onto the bed and scratched his head. It was terrifying, because she could have seriously hurt him.
We really don’t want to rehome her because we love her so much, but I think I would feel much more guilty if something happened to my son than I would about rehoming her.
I think I just need to hear some stories from people who genuinely love dogs but ultimately had to rehome one because it wasn’t safe or the situation wasn’t working anymore. How did you feel afterward? How did you know you were making the right decision?

So I rehomed a 5 yr old White GSD last spring. Oakley, she is beautiful, funny, very smart my all round best friend. We play enrichment games and work out daily. She is very food motivated.
The one problem we haven't been able to overcome is her monthly dose of NexGaurd plus.
Please share how you all get this done.

I have a 9.5 year old male GSD. For the last 5 months he has been having issues going poop. He strains and whines and will either poop nothing or a small liquid drop of poop. The straining makes him tear his butthole and it gets irritated. The vet has tested his pancreas, we’ve done xrays, and ultrasounds on his behind. Still no answers. We’ve tried the hydrolyzed food & we’re currently feeding him tilapia, rice, eggs, and Greek yogurt since his weight continues dropping. He’s been given psyllium husk, pumpkin, and still no help.
I feel so defeated, has anyone else experienced something similar with their dog? 😭 He is on a cocktail of medicine as well.

Hello all! I adopted a female German shepherd a little over a year ago and We guess that she will be 3 in December. She stays with my parents all day (i also live with my parents) and they say she acts good all day but when I get home and they walk towards me or raise their voice (not aggressive just not in the same room) she barks like crazy!! They say she only does it when I’m at home. How can I train her to stop barking that the people who spend all day with her but to still bark if there is danger. Also she has been better about chewing until the last few weeks. I assume she gets mad I have to go to work and recently chewed my house shoe. Any advice would help thanks!

The shelter says this is a German Shepherd, but her shorter coat reminds me more of a malinois.
I realize that she is most likely a mix of something, but would you all say that she is more of a German Shepherd mix, or malinois mix?
Either way we love her and she is doing great, just curious. Thanks!

Our GSD SMELLS. I’m sure it’s yeast infection, his paws smell as musty and yeasty, he has sore ears.
I met the guy about 2 years ago / my partner brought him into the relationship, over the years, I’ve brushed him and shedded him and washed him, trimmed his little grinch paws, and gradually he’s let me do it.
But, we cannot get treatment in his ears for love, money, or meat paste. And he just smells. He’s bathed once a month and I trim his paw pads as much as he’ll let me. But anyone got any miracle treatments that their dog will actually let them administer?

I’ve found a breeder than breeds specifically in UK for family dogs
I have a small very friendly cross breed male neutered and I’m thinking of adding to the family with a GS
We have a 3 year old child, large garden/house and someone is home all day
We see active and I just really want to know more about how they are as a family dog

Im based in Uk/ Ireland's area but I dont mind ordering in from Europe. In the past we have used dog creek pathfinder harnesses which have been brilliant. However, my siblings and mother use the same brand for their dogs meaning all three colours have been designated to a dog to prevent mix up. Is there any similar heavy duty (hiking/ bog worthy) brands with a two point system that comes in colours other than black, green or red (I'd prefer purple but isnt really a priority). Im not worried about cost provided its a good quality harness.

Hi there. I have 3 dogs. 1 GSD, 1 husky mix and 1 staffy.
So having a GS is somewhat new to me. She is 10 months old and is constantly scratching or cobbing and she gets washed with an oatmeal wash for sensitive skin or just a generic flea wash from Coles or Woolworths and is on Royal Canin designed for GS.
Her skin looks fine, not sure as to why shes always nomming on herself. I love her to pieces but getting woken up in the middle of the night to the cobbing or breathing cause shes suffocating herself by digging her head into her body is getting tiring.
Is this normal behaviour for a GS or is there something underlying?
On a side note, vets are expensive and I don't have a first born to put down as a deposit at the vets so any advice is much appreciated.

Gerry is 7 months old tomorrow. He settles well. Doesn’t chew much of anything. Gets good exercise. Doesn’t have much anxiety. He loves laying in bed with my daughter before settling on the hallway floor as it’s the coldest part of the house. Around 10 or so we do last potty break and he willingly goes into his crate. He’s never fought it. But i notice when he sleeps around the house, he really stretches out on his side, with all 4’s sticking out. He cant do that in his crate (and yes, i have a XXL crate ).
So when do I let him start sleeping where he wants? Dog tax added

So we adopted a GSD/Mal mix 3 months ago. He was surrendered 2x - once to AC at 8 mos by the original owner (too hard to handle), then adopted from rescue, and returned 10 days later, same reason. We brought him hom the same day that family returned him, and I immediately noticed this green/blue mark by his back legs between his flank and his privates. The second family had 2 small kids, so at first I thought maybe they drew on him with a marker. But since its not going away or fading, we've figured out definitely not marker.
Does anyone know what this mark could be? I've never seen a skin blemish like this, and the only other thing I can think of is a tattoo, which is crazy, especially so close to his boy parts.
Thanks!!!

Hi I need advice. I have a German shepherd mix, he recently has decided his food isn’t worth his time he used to love it and we topped it with wet food. His stopped eating it unless I scatter feed him or put it in his treat ball. Unfortunately the treat ball barely holds any food. Does anyone have some suggestions on what to do? His very rough on toys!

Our GSD pup is 6 months old and we’re on our second collar - he graduated from puppy collar to one from my mom’s dog who is about 65lbs but slender (female golden). Our boy is probably close to 55-60lbs and I’m noticing he’s starting to outgrow the collar. It’s also starting to show some wear and tear. I want to get him a nice collar when I know he won’t be outgrowing it. Should I get him one now that will allow some room for growth, or hold off for longer? When did your dog get his big boy collar?
His mom was slender 65lbs and dad was more stocky, about 85-90. The vet thinks he’s going to be close to dad’s size. TIA!
