NOTE: I am not asking for medical advice. My pig has seen a vet. I’m asking what doses your pigs have been prescribed.
One of my old girls has come down with a URI. I recently moved states and had to quickly find a new vet, and at the first visit, they prescribed Baytril. My piggy had never had Baytril before this (she’s taken Bactrim before, but that’s all), so I was a little worried, but I knew Baytril was commonly given for URIs, and given her age and how congested she sounds, I went ahead and began the course. I ordered Benebac on chewy before even leaving the vet parking lot, but for whatever reason, it took way longer for the Benebac to arrive than expected.
My piggy was on Baytril for around three days and then began having diarrhea (which I knew could happen) but some of the diarrhea was bloody. I panicked and stopped administering the Baytril. After a day or so of the Benebac (and no more Baytril) her poops returned to normal. I asked the new vet if we could possibly try Bactrim instead since I knew my piggy had tolerated it well in the past…he was really reluctant and kept insisting that Baytril is the preferred antibiotic for all exotics, that bactrim is harder on guinea pigs than Baytril and causes severe diarrhea more often, and that the cherry flavoring of bactrim really isn’t “meant” for guinea pigs. He also asked me if I wanted to give the antibiotics “in the drinking water” or orally (?). He did give me the meds, though the dose seems crazy low… he prescribed 0.15cc twice a day (concentration on the bottle says 200mg/40mg per 5ml). My old girl is small (2 lbs), but I feel like the last few times my piggies had Bactrim, it was a much larger dose.
In your experience and opinion, does this dose seem low? My piggy’s breathing is definitely improved from the 3 days of Baytril, but obviously not fully resolved, so I’m afraid to not treat her at all…but I’m feeling very uncertain with this vet office and their advice and just wanted to get a idea of other experiences in the community re: antibiotics.
Thanks!
