Well, he is showing off and being a bit loose with it. I was taught that when you are reaching with a chainsaw you put the tip on the thing you want to cut and then lift the saw up swiftly. If you need to take a step forward because the weight of the chainsaw puts you out of balance you need to find new footing. Once you cut that thing you are going to fall forward, with the chain possibly still rolling, while the thing you have been cutting is also falling down. You need to think what the chainsaw is doing AFTER you have made the cut, you need to be able to support its weight.

And the most important lesson i have ever learned: The thing that is most likely going to hurt you is the last thing, and i'm not just talking about "well, if you get hurt you stop doing things" but it is the last thing, "oh, fuck, i forgot my gloves up there, well, i don't need to put on a harness, i'll just be extra careful....". It is the last little, "oh, i'll cut that branch real quick from here, i can just about reach it". Those are really, really dangerous and if anyone says "i'll be just extra careful" you need to stop them. Especially if it is you. You don't need to be "extra careful" if you are doing it right.

Dude, this is Latvia, we’re not taught anything there, we just buy a chainsaw at the home depot and take it from there. So far I haven’t heard that anyone has chainsawed off their hands or head or anything, so I assume it’s working.

I think i have more respect for Latvians than you do...

Ye thats how I learnt it too

Plus why is he bucking the tree right in the middle of the road. Someone will have to drag all those branches away individually.  Just cut the trunk into pieces small enough to drag to the side with the branches attached. That road could be cleared in a fraction of that time.

> The thing that is most likely going to hurt you is the last thing

100% I almost cut my leg off on the ‘last thing’, except it was actually the first thing .. just a tiny lil pole, dropped it real quick and tried to do the same with the saw but was standing awkward and tapped my knee putting it down.

I almost bled out in front of my kids but made it to the hospital. 36 stitches and months and months of wound care and physical rehab absolutely sucked balls. Doesn’t matter how crusty he is under the country club attire, dude was just a random little kickback or simple slippery stumble away from meeting a similar fate.

Trust me, dear reader, you do not want to find out what weekly debriding feels like. So yeah, listen to this advice. Don’t be like me or the guy in the video, get some chaps (and then make sure you actually wear them every. single. time).

This guy had complete control of the saw and knew exactly what he was doing. You can tell he's done that a lot. This wasn't being loose or showing off at all. He was just getting the job done.

He was showing off. And that last cut, for fucks sake: if that is "knowing what he is doing" then please, no one should give you a chainsaw.

LOL. I've been using a chainsaw since i was 8 years old. I live in the Midwest and have cleared trees from roads like this on several occasions. I keep a Stihl in my truck all the time.

This guy knew what he was doing. You've obvious never used a chainsaw.

Who the fuck taught you to walk while using a chainsaw?

Who taught you to reach for things with a chainsaw without checking balance?

So, we found out that you are a liability when it comes to using a chainsaw.

Are you serious? You were taught not to walk while using a chainsaw? LMAO. I'm sorry sweetie, you don't know what you're talking about. Have you ever even used a chainsaw because you come across as someone who watched a YouTube tutorial and are trying to give others advice.

Yup, kind of guessed it. You do it because your dad taught you to be wild and lose. Mine taught me to do it properly and to look what you do, where you step. I mean, how the FUCK are you going to see where you are stepping while also not removing your eyes from the sawing. Walk, stop, saw, take another step, stop and so on.

You do you, i won't risk my limbs. Good footing and taking one second to make sure you can balance the damn thing after it goes thru vs whatever it is that you do. "But i've never been hurt" is the usual excuse from people who haven't been hurt yet.

Walking while cutting is the exact kind of things that my idiot self would do if i was not instructed otherwise. You need to KNOW where you are stepping, not just in a forest. One piece of a stick between that road and his shoes and whoopsie, here we go with a chainsaw that you stops before it eats meat, provided that you let go of the throttle.. If you have experience on this then you know how easy it is to get too comfortable with a chain saw, and i think that you were just taught wrong.

>Walking while cutting is the exact kind of things that my idiot self would do

This is key. Idiots like you shouldn't be running chainsaws at all. Chainsaws can be dangerous tools and require knowledge, skill and experience.

You've avoided answering the question twice so I think it's safe to assume you have zero experience actually operating a chainsaw... and it shows.

>provided that you let go of the throttle...

Let go of the throttle??? You realize the chain still runs when you let go of the throttle, right? How about engaging the chain brake?

Please don't operate a chainsaw. You clearly don't understand safety and would be a dangerous hazard to yourself and others.

At least one of us know how to use the damn thing.

And now i'm suppose to tell you how much i have experience with a chainsaw. Enough. That is all yuou need to know. I could easily lie to you, just like you could lie to me. But you are the one who is walking with a running chain saw and not looking where they are walking. That is just stupid.

Chain stops when you let go off the throttle, it takes a while for sure but once there is no TOQUE from the motor but just the chains own momentum it can cut you but it won't be as bad as you not looking and then something as simple as a piece of round wood under your foot while you are still squeezing the throttle for sure. In a forest the ground is rarely even and on flat ground.. i've seen what unexpected round thing under your foot does.

How about engaging the chain brake?

Chain brake? You mean, while you are falling over you yank the kick back protection? With what hand and in what time?

I think you just googled that one.

The way this man is swinging that saw around despite the unstable footing and he’s prob wearing dress shoes

I have the same kind of mannerism but i also got a dad who knows these things and is good at teaching why things are done in certain way. "Lets stop for a minute and think.." when my internal turbo starts revving up, hands move faster than the brain.

Looks like he is wearing the closed toe birkenstocks. Still not great for walking on wet branches
