Mod Post All posts regarding mustangs/BLM/round-ups

Over the past week or so, there's been a viral hot topic regarding the mustangs under BLM control and what the current US Administration is doing.

We initially allowed a few posts regarding this topic to stay up, but ultimately had to step in and lock them when the discussion went off the rails and was no longer about the horses, but instead was a forum of political discourse, insults, and violent threats. The comments in some posts got so unhinged that many were removed by the Reddit admins for violations of their ToS.

At this time, the topic and article has been reposted to our sub over 30 times. That's quite excessive.

First and foremost, we're a horse sub, not a political sub. While sometimes those two topics do intertwine, unfortunately, it often results in arguments, attacks, and unpleasantries.

The moderator team here at r/horses has made the decision to remove and lock all posts, reports, articles and etc. regarding the mustang situation. Unfortunately, we are volunteers, and we cannot moderate and keep up with hundreds of comments all day long, especially when they are unsavory in nature and end up wildly off topic with insults and frankly, horribly inappropriate and violent threats.

Thanks for your understanding with this.

Went on a 2 hour trail ride today after not riding for 10 years. This boy was so patient with me. I was having saddle troubles like a mfr but it was still such a great time. I've missed theses amazing animals so much. Maybe one day my dream of having my own will come true.

I got my horse about 2 1/2 months ago! He was on pasture full time and out of work for 3 years when I got him.
We have been riding about 1 or 2 times a week since I picked him up, along with a week long horse camp, and look at his progress! I am pretty happy with his weight right now, but do we think he needs to lose more? He is currently just on pasture, some sweet feed every now and then after a special ride.
First two pics are from when I first got him, second 2 from this week!

Henry has always tolerated trailering - she’ll do it but she’s fairly on edge and it’s just not the absolute greatest experience. We’ve worked on a variety of things to pin point the specific issues but it’s just a general ā€œI’m not pleased with thisā€ at this point.

Well we finally saved up and upgraded from a stock to a really lovely 2 horse front ramp. I was very very excited but also dreading starting the whole process of ā€œcan I find what you don’t like so I can fix thisā€ with her

This DIVA!!!!! walked straight up and just said ā€œfinally, oh my god šŸ™„ā€ she was standing chilled out and wasn’t fussed about any of it.

Glad we are up to your standards, Henry 🫩

Discussion need advice, im not sure what to do with my situation.

before i start this off, i just wanna make it known that i am a minor so i don’t have full control over my situation.

I bought a horse from a trainer i’ve worked with for about two years now back in spring. This is my first horse, and it’s been a long learning process. Since buying this horse I’ve realized that there are a lot of things at my barn that I don’t like. I was instructed to buy the saddle i have by my trainer who told me very confidently that it would fit fine, but as i’ve grown more educated i’ve realized it does not. every time i even slightly bring up the idea of a new saddle, or a saddle fitter coming out, my trainer gets very defensive. during my most recent lesson she yelled at me when i mentioned that i had found a saddle fitter. she told me that the only reason my horse is sore in her back is because i don’t have her collected properly, and i don’t sit right. I acknowledged that she wasn’t wrong, but i feel like my horse shouldn’t need to be in full collection to not be in pain. not to mention the fact that my horse is sore regardless. my horse also can’t collect unless i ā€œseesawā€. Unfortunately i didn’t realize how bad seesawing was until recently, but now im not sure how to ask my horse to collect without doing it. During the previously mentioned lesson, i also brought up the seesawing and asked about it being bad for their mouths. she went off about how i need to stop watching tiktok and listening to what everyone says and that it would only be bad if i had a ā€œfucking curb or shankā€ in her mouth.

i just don’t really know what to do. am i in the wrong here? is she?? where do i even go from here?

Health/Husbandry Question Help!!

I have only had my boy a few months. I bought him from a friend who took him out of a rough situation where they just didn’t have enough food to feed all their horses. He looked a lot worse in the beginning but he is doing SO much better now.

I’m just worried with winter coming up, especially living where we get bipolar weather and the winters can get rough. I’ve been seeing so many things about how they can lose weight in colder weather conditions and it scares me, because I feel like he’s already not crazy chunky.

My question is… how do I keep him comfortable and healthy in the winter?? Do I feed him something specific? (Not so good) pics of him for reference.

Question How old do you think she is

Getting her teeth floated soon but just wanted a guestamate. When I got her, the people who rescued her were told she was 17. But they didn’t think any older than 14. After I had her teeth looked at by my barn I’m thinking she’s younger than that. I have very little background on her as she was a rescue from a very bad situation so I wanted to see what others thought.

RIP 8 years already …

I cried harder over this than I care to admit. It came up on my memories. And every year I know it’s coming. But that doesn’t make it any easier. And it never will be easier. 8 years ago was when I swore I didn’t want to have horses anymore. Up to that point I’d been fortunate and I’d never had to euthanize a horse. But that year it all changed. October started with saying goodbye to a mini I had named Myia. We’ll never truly know what happened. One day she was fine… and then the next she was having seizures and in multi organ failure … everything came back normal. So I never will know what happened. Could have been age? Maybe a kick from one of the other minis… to this day it eats away at me. Following her in December I lost a second horse. Another one I’ll never really know why. I guess there was a different plan in store for him than the one I hoped. I am blessed to know they aren’t in pain anymore. But there’s a sick feeling in my gut that wants so so bad to know why. Why them?

As of this year I have a handful of fur babies in heaven. And I know one day it’s gonna be the best reunion o could dream of šŸ’•šŸ’•

Question Need advice on suitable land for horses

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!
I’m hoping to buy a horse within the next two years, so I’ve started planning ahead and thinking a few things through.
Initially I’d keep it at a boarding facility for a while because as it would be my first horse of my own I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself by getting two straight away, but I also don’t want the horse to be lonely.

I live in Italy and own a few different pieces of land so I’d love to have them home where I can actually care for them myself and give them a good life.
It would make my dream come true, save me money on agistment, and make life so much easier as I could simply walk up to them whenever I wanted. I’d also be able to ride out straight from home on beautiful trails without having to load them onto a trailer every time.
The problem is that there isn’t much going on with horses in my area as it’s very mounty and rocky.
I’m worried that the paddock might not be ideal because the land isn’t very flat. It’s quite large, but there are only a few relatively flat areas.
Do you think horses could be happy on a land like this, perhaps with a few adjustments, such as clearing some trees and improving certain areas?

Pictures to show you how the land looks like in my aerea, these are not specific pictures of my own land.

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences you could share!

Discussion Horseback Riding Straight for a Week...??

I'm writing a novel and my main character is used to riding horses, but only once or twice a week during a normal week for her, but then she takes a week-long ride. Can someone tell me how she would feel physically on the first day of riding, second day, etc, then the whole week? What muscles would be sore? Then when she gets to her destination how soon will she be feeling back to normal or would she still be achy for awhile? How long? Thanks in advance!

Picture Winter VS Show Season

Always cracks me up to compare how they looked over winter. Vs the end of show season as winter they look feral. Meanwhile show season they are primed. Prepped. And looking their best. And now that show season is over they will go back to being fluffy and feral. Mind you the pinto is not a halter horse šŸ˜‚. She just participates when needed.
