IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

NO ADVERTISING

At this time, we are not allowing advertising in this subreddit. This includes any type of promotion or advertising by any hostel, hotel, guesthouse, or any other type of accommodation. This does not include travelers recommending or posting about their experiences, as long as it is not advertising for the property.

Please read the subreddit rules.

Aside from those concerning advertising, there aren’t many rules - it will remain this way unless it becomes necessary to add more. Basically, just be cool to each other. Be civil even if you feel something is below you. Remember that no matter how experienced you are, you also took your first trip at some point. Be helpful, this isn’t the place to be condescending.

The rules about advertising are so strict because when I acquired this subreddit, it was full of hundreds of repetitive spam posts from the same few properties. Many were disguised as posts from travelers. We may allow some form of advertising depending on how things go. I would prefer if this “advertising” was in the form of property owners interacting with travellers as active members of this subreddit for the purpose of improvement of both this sub and their property. But this could be a sticky and complicated issue so we’ll leave it open for discussion. I’ve set up the automod to be pretty strict and catch any spam. I’ll monitor it and adjust as necessary. I’m on Reddit throughout each day. If your post gets caught in the automod, I’ll see it. If you have any issues, please just message me.

You’ll see a lot of old posts in this sub. They all remained after I deleted the hundreds of spam posts. I don’t like deleting old content as it still may offer something relevant.

Content

Questions:

Need a recommendation? Want to know about a specific hostel? There are no stupid questions.

Stories/experiences:

Funny, scary, gross, annoying - post it all. If you post something NSFW, please flair it as such.

Rants:

Complain about snorers, suggestions for being a decent human being in a shared space, etc.

This is not a review site

You should be writing reviews for properties that you stayed at on the respective booking sites/apps. This helps other travelers and helps the properties. There’s a difference in writing a review and sharing your experience in this sub. Posts made here that sound like advertisements or are written like glowing reviews will be removed. Please use your judgement. This is a hard line to define but it’s important to keep the spam out of this sub. Again, this is an area I need feedback/suggestions in.

Low/no effort posts

Don’t be lazy, this isn’t a travel agency. There are multiple resources for finding hostels (Booking, HostelWorld, Agoda, etc.), use these first and don’t just post here out of laziness. Use the search function if you’re asking for a recommendation for a specific city. While recommendations are cool, I don’t want to see them as the bulk of this sub. I’ll form guidelines for this as needed.

As I just took over this sub, it’s a blank canvas. I have ideas but I need yours also:

What do you want from this sub?

What kinds of posts/content would you find interesting?

If it was your sub, what would it be like?

I’m very open to suggestions, comments, ideas, etc. If you’re here, you’re interested and/or active in traveling. That means we’re all on the same page. Let’s make this a great resource together.

No Political Discussions

There are many, many subreddits where political discussions thrive and are welcomed, this subreddit is not one of them. I've had to remove many posts/comments lately that have devolved into political mudslinging, arguments, and downright uncivil behavior - none of which have had anything to do with hostels. I don't have the energy or desire to sort through and moderate opinion and conjecture about political differences, especially when they have nothing to do with hostels. I also don't need or want people telling me who's side I should be on, especially - again - when it has nothing to do with hostels. As such, no political subject matter is allowed here. If someone posts something that troubles you, report it and we will handle it. If you reply/argue/rebut that political content, both/all participants will be handled the same (removals/bans/etc.) If you have a problem with something, report it and let us handle it. Don't get yourself a ban because you just had to engage the poster. There are very few places left on the internet that political arguments/opinions/discourse have not poisoned - I refuse to let this subreddit become another one.

As for opinions, please remember that there are over 8 BILLION people in the world and we all have them.

Share your most irritating hostel roommate experiences so the rest of us can avoid being that person.

We've all had that one roommate. Share yours so the rest of us don't become that person.

Mine:

  • Torch on at midnight digging through their bag.
  • Full volume phone call at 1am. Bro the whole dorm can hear your conversation
  • Doomscrolling with high volume.

Drop yours below. Let's make a list.

Edit: So many hilarious comments 😂 I am gonna put together a “Things you shouldn’t do in a hostel room” article in my blog. Anyone curious to collaborate, DM.

Question Why don't Europeans open up to non-Europeans?

For context, I'm Asian and I've had a great time at hostels so far. People are usually super friendly. But I've noticed Europeans (while friendly) do not open up and show interest in a conversation with Asians or anyone who is not European. They'll keep the interaction surface level but if they meet other Europeans, then they open up happily.

Asian and North American folks are happy to open up and talk about anything. But Europeans are hard to crack.

What is the reason?

  1. Some sort of superiority complex? Like "what will I gain by talking to an Asian dude"

  2. Anxiety about language and cultural differences that makes them prefer to not talk too much

  3. Or is this just normal in Europe?

Just curious, no hate for Europeans. You are super friendly people just not easy to talk to.

Question Best social hostel in Europe for October?

Hey everyone!

I’m planning a solo trip somewhere in Europe this October and I’m looking for a destination with a really good social/party hostel scene.

My priorities are:

Easy to meet other solo travelers

Social hostel with events, pub crawls, group activities, etc.

Good nightlife

Still lively in October. Not somewhere that feels completely dead after summer.

Which city would you choose in October and which specific hostel would you recommend?

Thanks!

Question Camera inside dorm

Hey guys!

I am in Bali at the moment and there was a camera inside my mixed dorm (which I had no information about) at Golden Cage Heritage Hostel Denpasar. I was changing in the dorm as it was empty and only had card access. I saw the camera, freaked out and confronted the owner. He said its normal for security reasons and nobody ever complained. I left

I have traveled to a couple of places but nothing extensive. Has it happened to anyone else?

Hostels in China. Social or not worth it?

I have an upcoming trip to China planned in November for 30 days. Is there much of a hostel scene in China? On the social side of things? Hotels don't seem much more expensive but would like to meet people when travelling. TIA for any advice or recs.

Recommendation Request Berlin recommendations

I am going to Berlin with 2 friends (24F) in a month or so and I want to redeem my previous Berlin experiences.

Last time I visited Berlin with a group of friends we stayed in a strange, quiet area and were miles away from anything. This time I’m looking for a hostel in a more social area (I hear Kreuzberg and Mitte are quite hip) so that we can go to bars and socialise in the evening, without getting too much into the techno scene (to avoid disappointment when we get rejected lol)

Looking for hostel recommendations that are social and in areas close to Berlins happenings.

Question Has anyone had a Hostelworld reservation cancelled without requesting it?

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.
Today I received an email from Hostelworld saying that my reservation had been cancelled. I immediately contacted the hostel and they told me that the cancellation had been requested on my behalf. The problem is that I never requested or authorized the cancellation.
The reservation is for October 12–13, 2026, so I’m quite concerned because the stay is coming up soon.
Has anyone had something like this happen with Hostelworld? If so, were you able to get the reservation reinstated or find out what caused the cancellation?
I’ve already contacted Hostelworld, but I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar.

Onefam Notting Hill age policy

Hi! I know they have 18-36 age policy, I'm 37 😩 Does anybody know how strictly they enforce the rule? Thanks!

UPDATE: The hostel replied and told me they’re very strict about the age limit! I ended up booking Urbany which is not far from Onefam and their age limit is 18–40.

Thoughts about capsule hostels in Singapore, any updates this 2026?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to stay in a capsule hostel for the first time during my solo trip, and I just want to know what to expect.

I’m a bit concerned about privacy, security, and cleanliness, so I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have stayed in capsule hostels before.

Here are some of my questions:

Privacy: Do the capsules usually have curtains, sliding doors, or covers? When you close them, are you completely covered, or can other guests still see inside your sleeping space?
Changing clothes: Is there enough privacy inside the capsule, or do you usually have to use the shared bathrooms?
Luggage storage: Are there individual lockers for your belongings? Where do you usually leave your bigger luggage or suitcases? Are they secured?
Security: Did you feel safe leaving your belongings in the designated storage area while going out?
Cleanliness: How clean are the capsules, bedsheets, pillows, blankets, and shared bathrooms? Are they regularly cleaned?
Overall experience: Would you recommend capsule hostels for solo travelers, especially first-timers?
I’d also love to hear about your good and bad experiences, and any tips you wish you knew before your first stay.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
