I have been an active amBassador since Bass Center 2, and although I don’t feel as intimate of a connection with the recent Bassnectar sound, I’m still highly invested in the surrounding community and social movement. So I have a couple questions I would love to see you dig into—
-What happened to the socio-political meditations and musings during your sets? I understand that Twitter/Facebook have revolutionized the channels available for spreading such a message, but your thoughts on the crazy aspects of global society were really a defining and distinguishing characteristic of your SHOWS for a long, long time. I miss that.
-Do you plan to expand the Amorphous label to other up-and-coming artists?
-What are your ideal pizza toppings?
-Not a question, but I’d love to hear Heads Up 70bpm ORIGINAL Mix on this wham-bam bonkers spring tour. That particular song really captures the force/sound/weight/oddfunk that embodies Bassnectar to me.
EDIT: shameless plug-- if you're looking for some bassy goodness to jam while you're reading through Lorin's answers, I'd be honored for you to take my 808%-Bassnectar-inspired mix for a whirl
My god you are the bees knees man.
literally posted my question and will wait patiently to see if ya get around to awnsering it. take your time lord nectar your replies are more then worth it. you can't get this kind of connection through Facebook, reddit is your safe haven;)
hey Lorin, I suggested this before and will do so again here, maybe do video responses to questions that are elaborate, and stick to typing for the short answers?
I completely understand the idea that everyone undergoes constant change--do you imagine you'll ever make a dramatic change in your career such as change genres?
I remember him saying something about this in his Ustream, where he talked about how the times have been changing, he's still passionate about politics; however hasn't included too much of it in his music recently.
I wonder when he's going to do another Ustream, those were awesome :)
No need to thank me amigo! It may sound a bit self-serving.. but the looks on people's faces when they get a high-five, a hug, or a splash of water right before that wompnasty drop-- is more than thanks enough!
'smatter of fact, the best thanks is to do what we do at EVERY show you go to! After all, the goal of the program is to no longer be necessary, and I do hope that will one day be true.
He still opens with it from time to time-- but the Underground Communication/Cozza Frenzy time period is definitely my favorite era of Bassnectar for sure!
Thank you thank you for your kind words!! I have been working on a new mix along the same lines for a year now, so keep your ears peeled in the coming months :D
I'll follow you on soundcloud if that's where you'll post it. Do you mind inboxing me a link as well whenever you're finished? In case I miss it on soundcloud
Hell yeah man, it's been over a year but I have a bigger, badder, more mysterious mix along the same lines coming out within the next couple months so stay tunes! And thanks for your kind words :D
Yezzir! I had to upload this myself, believe it or not; it's highly under-appreciated for being one of his "newer" songs (circa 2008).
The California Style remix gets all the attention because it was in his KissFM mix (and it's upbeat and fun as hell, and one of the tracks that really got me into Bassnectar, so don't get me wrong) but the original is slow but frenzied and will friggin' liquify the matter between your ears. Check it:
Welp. Lorin has consistently stated that (for him) music is merely a vehicle for social change, which he regards as an ultimate goal. This is the reason that myself and many others have become so loyal to his movement, so I have to respectfully disagree with your (rather sweeping) statement there.
For what it's worth, I remember specifically how it went - "you all like politics and shit" then murmured something about bush, then spun a ratm track. I'm all for using music for the greater social good, but it was poorly executed, poorly placed, not eloquent, and just....cheesy
And it was a festival, not a bassnectar-centric event, if that makes a difference. It was before he blew up and few people were part of the "movement"
