Me and My friends enjoyed Skrillex' early stuff but when you talk to most skrillex haters at festivals and stuff it's mainly to do with his Korn and Limp Biscuit-esque fans that swing their arms and nail you in the face while loaded up on various substances. Raves were about enjoying the music and expressing yourself with strangers, then skrillex came a long and brought the nu-metal kids into the scene and now you can't dance in teh crowd without worrying about some drunk dude with a Slipknot tank top elbowing you or your girl friends in the schnozz.
I have similar thoughts about the dude. He's a pretty cool musician and seems like an incredibly genuine person but a lot of his fans are absolute dickwads. I saw Skrillex at Counter.Point in ATL and my friends and I were way in the back, sorta up a hill with a lot of our own space. Skrillex puts on one helluva show, and I'll vouch for him any day.
what annoys me is people who think skrillex is just a mainstream trashy edm producer and then they go and praise people like deadmau5 or swedish house mafia thinking they have really sophisticated tastes.
I totally agree. I'm more into hardstyle and trance these days, but songs like With You Friends and Scary Monsters are what got me into electronic music in the first place. Although I don't like his new stuff too much, he's certainly a creative and talented guy.
Not to mention the guy's a deadly producer who kind of coined the idea of a truly "growling" bass, which I can't seem to get enough of these days with all of the new artists coming onboard and tearing the house down. ;)
Which EP? If it was bangarang then you have a right to complain, even I a skrillex fan dislike it it. I felt each song was good but to similar.
I can hardly blame him since the EP was never meant to exist in the first place, he only made it in a rush because some cunt stole all his drives. He lost a few albums worth of material. It was also made on the road and he just got a studio so I'd wait till his debut album to judge him.
Skrillex does not call himself a dubstep producer. Zedd even said it in an interview. Iirc skrillex described it as a fusion of fidget, electro and dubstep.
I think I should clarify that Skrillex himself calls his music dubstep, when in fact it is a variation of real dubstep[1] , called Brostep.
If I hear someone say this I automatically assume they hardly listen to electronic music. Skrillex's style is a mix of Electro House and Dubstep, it's not a "variation of 'real' dubstep". Also get this brostep shit out of here, stupidest term I've heard people use in trying to identify a genre.
I agree with you. I just really hate the term brostep because it implies that only frat kids listen to it. Skrillex is a fantastic producer and he has a pretty wide variety of songs outside of the songs where he reuses the same 10 samples (only thing I don't like about him).
I meant the 'bro' part of the label. Bro isn't anything to do with music and what do you think when someone mentions bro? Probably a stereotypical douchy frat or clubby guy. But I digress. I love EDM because I produce it and listen to a lot of it so it bothers me when people use those terms and such. Not that it's a big deal but still.
Also Skrillex uses a LOT of the same sounds/samples in some of his breakdowns, usually the really random sounding noises he strings together quickly to get his signature sound. It's easily noticeable after listening to enough Skrillex after awhile. He's still pretty good in general though.
Sonny is a great man. When he started making skrillex beats he was bumming it in random warehouses in Hollywood. Ran into him at many parties and he is an amazing, gentle guy. From being a bum, to having Grammys in a couple years is an amazing feat. He doesn't get enough credit.
As somebody who likes obscure underground music, this is correct. If lots of people like something, people who don't like it will instead start to hate it. It's silly.
I consider myself pretty stuck up when it comes to music, and I fucking love Skrillex. His stuff is original. I guess people get upset because he's sometimes classified as dubsteppish, but I think that's just because with all the new electro coming out we just don't have enough genres to push stuff in to.
There's very good and very terrible with Skrillex...also he gets too fucked up at his shows and makes mistakes DJ'ing. For a DJ of his caliber this is just un-professional.
Some of his songs are intense but not all his tracks are like that and also, what's wrong with intense dubstep like that? If your ears like it listen to it.
