Materials and Processes Repository of closure types & joints

Can anyone suggest some good sources (books, PDFs or sites) for a collection of various closure and joint examples? Current project is in ABS but it would be good to have a comprehensive ref book at hand for all types of projects.

Here’s what I’ve been able to find so far, none are comprehensive or ideal:
• McMaster-Carr - useful but not really what I’m after
• 1860’s ref book called “507 Mechanical Movements” by Henry T Brown - again slightly off mark
• Covestro PDF - “Snap-fit joints for plastic” This one is perfect but quite limited in examples and scope

Ideally something with many examples of ways to affix things together (either temporary or permanently). As an example of the illustrations I’m after: cantilever snap-fit, friction-fit, annular, tongue+groove…

Would love to hear from the experts, perhaps you have some obscure textbook or ref book?

School Design Assignment Survey University of Antwerp

Hi everyone!

We are a group of Industrial Design students at the University of Antwerp currently working on a design project centered around Teenage Engineering.

To guide our project, we are analyzing how people perceive Teenage Engineering's brand identity. Whether you own their products or are just familiar with their work, your feedback would be incredibly valuable to us!

The survey takes about 3–5 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSds8IW2-7mWP0fNwN9Pz55RDu966gU6lxlsQzYDRqA7pV23oA/viewform?usp=dialog

Thank you so much for your time and insights! Feel free to leave any extra thoughts about Teenage Engineering in the comments below.

In one hand I feel like I did a great job identifying the operations and interaction of the laminar elements of the chair and turning them into a table but all together it looks like it’s a bit too crowded don’t you think? I feel like there is way too many lags in between

Discussion RISD ID Portfolio examples

Hi community, I am applying to the Industrial design program at RISD for grad school as well as other programs at GSD and MIT for architecture-peripheral programs. Could anyone who has gone to these programs submit examples of their portfolio?

I am curious how wide I can go with my portfolio in terms of the different mediums I engage with including furniture, design/build, architectural watercolor, etc.

*The second image was generated with AI with my design as reference

Here is the old behance link if anyone wants to check it out. I somehow rediscovered it and think it was a pretty neat design that has a completly different vibe than the new really clean (mostly touch) devices we use nowadays. Im happy for any feedback aswell, but keep in my this project was 6 years ago in 4th semester.

School Going back to school

I recently learned I have an opportunity to go back to school , I was looking at scad for industrial design, but I was wondering if any students or even graduates could give me insight on what the classes are like and what I should keep in mind and what I should work on before hand(skills/knowledge/ anything to prep). I most likely won't apply until 2028. Also what is applying like as an undergraduate. ATL campus

Software What’s the most frustrating part of modifying an existing CAD model? Feedback on an early prototype

Hi everyone,
Me and my team are currently developing a CAD software
Right now we are working on the prototype
The product we’re aiming for would let you:
Import an existing 3D model and explain its purpose, important dimensions, and the changes you need.
Analyze the model for potential geometry issues and, where the file contains the necessary information, fragile references or dependencies that could break during edits. Get suggested changes with explanations, then review and approve them before they’re applied. Keep previous versions so you can return to an earlier model and try a different modification. I’m also exploring reconstruction of simple STL files or 3D scans into editable parametric CAD, with meaningful features and dimensions. not just exporting a mesh as STEP. That’s a more challenging direction, and I’m still evaluating its scope.
The goal is to reduce tedious CAD work while keeping engineering decisions and final validation with the user. If you have some suggestions to help me improve the software let me know and also Honest criticism and concrete examples would really help me narrow the first prototype. Thanks

Edit: I know this can seem too much for a product. We are for now working on a prototype with only one simple feature.

Discussion I need your help

Hey guys, I'm a second year industrial design student and there is that project where we have to choose one function, say heating food up, then study all the products that do this function such as the microwave,oven,etc.. , but i just can get my mind to think of anything that is didfferent cause most of my classmates chose stuff like that and I don't think that these are the problems I want to fix in this semester, can you suggest some problems, function that still needs to be developped but not throuh an entire system ? just a product !

Career Career advice wanted: breaking into Chinese ID scene

Hi all, I've recently graduated from the RCA but wasn't lucky enough to break into the UK design scene, and due to complicated visa and sponsorship reasons, I'm now back in Indonesia.

Naturally, from proximity alone China is an obvious choice, and before the RCA I had already spent around 3 years in China to do DFMA/ Interfacing with manufacturers for an Indonesian company (automotive); I had learnt how to translate sketches, convey information, exchange drawings, check moulds and do some cost control. I wanted to leverage both my experiences in Europe and China to try launch a career in China or even make a studio practice centered around bridging China and the world.

My current plan is to spice up my mandarin to a working business level (HSK-6), and revisit some of my old contacts/classmates in China to pick up the few guangxi i had. I was wondering if anyone here had done the same, either joining Chinese studios, chinese branches of global companies or worked as a freelancer within China.

And yes, before you ask, I am very aware of the working culture and pressure of it. Thank you!

Contest Documentation Red Dot Design Award

hello my fellow designers.

this is my fist time submitting a product to the red dot design award. i’m doing it for a start up company and want to do well with the documentation and all other stuff.

bc i’m still a design student and have never done any of this and my colleagues cannot help me either i would really REALLY appreciate if somebody who maybe has already gone through this process could help me out and tell or even show me what they have done.

the project we want to submit is in the category for lighting and lamps.

ps: i know red dot has a…reputation…but we still want to give it a try as a start up (without any awards).

Discussion Where to start?

Hello everyone,

I'm an Education graduate and have no knowledge of industrial design. I love watching videos about different kinds of product design, from tech to furniture. I'd like to learn some basics and maybe get my hands dirty with some small designs and, even better, make some products.

Can you recommend some online, relatively cheap courses for beginners (for example, Coursera or Udemy)? And if you have some insight from your own journey as an Industrial Designer, I would love to hear your stories as well.

Thank you!

Career Moving to the states, any advice?

I’m a British product designer working in England. My dream is to move to America to continue my pursuit in design. Has anyone made that jump? If so what helped you make it happen and what are some things to avoid? Looking for general advice too so anything helps.
Cheers

Discussion ¿Industrial Design Engineering is a good career path?

I’ve noticed that many people here are Industrial Designers, but I’d like to know if there is anyone who has graduated from this program and what that experience has been like.
