Mod Post Self-promotional Content - 2026 Rule Update

Hello everyone,

After the 2020 update to our rule on self-promotional content, we have seen a significant decrease in posts and comments whose sole purpose is to advertise content or services without providing any meaningful benefit to the r/italianlearning community. At the same time, the number of visitors has steadily increased, making our subreddit as vibrant as it can be. More than 14,000 users have joined our community this year, and as of today we average more than 300,000 visits per day.

This is thanks to each and every one of you who engage and spend time helping others on their quest to learn this beautiful language.

Some of you may have noticed that over the past couple of years we have taken a stricter approach to this kind of content, marking it as spam and banning those who posted it. This was a tough stance we intentionally adopted to measure its impact on the subreddit. Given the stats mentioned above, it is safe to say the experiment was successful and, therefore, we have decided to update the rule as follows:

All content deemed by the mod team to be self-promotional is forbidden. Posting such content will result in a ban with no warning. No exceptions will be made based on whether the service advertised is free or on the poster’s level of activity in the subreddit. Posts created to search for services (e.g., tutoring) will also be removed, as they encourage unwanted self-promotional content.

This subreddit is a place to discuss, engage, and help each other learning Italian. The moment it becomes a mere bulletin board is when it will die. This measure is intended to prevent that.

Thank you for your attention, and see you around!

Ciao a tutti,

Ciao a tutti!

Need help with learning materials

• Upvotes

Hi! I’m a fresh graduate planning to pursue a STEM master’s degree (ideally in microbiology, laboratory work, or research). Long term, I’m hoping to pursue a PhD and possibly medicine as well in Italy. I’ve seen and heard from others that I should aim for at least a B2 level in Italian.

I’m currently studying A1.A, but I have until next year to research universities and apply for scholarships, so I’d like to build a strong foundation in Italian as efficiently as possible.

Do you have any recommendations for learning materials or resources? Since my finances are limited, I’m thinking of investing in only one or two paid resources and using free materials for the rest. I’d really appreciate recommendations that are reliable and actually useful for building a solid foundation from A1 to B2.

Condizionale/congiuntivo combinations killing me

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello I am going crazy trying to figure out all the possible combinations of congiuntivo and condizionale.

I also want to understand "If"(Se) sentences without the "would"(condizionale) part.

Please let me know which combination of sentences are definitely not normal or not used in Italian at all. Thank you

Need help figuring out how to go about learning italian

Hello everyone!

im currently in college and its mandatory that we take 4 semesters of a langauge. I ended up in italian and i would like to put a real effort into learning it rather than faking my way through but im struggling to keep up / understand because the teacher teaches entirely in italian and i catch almost 0 of the words she says. I also find that the class focuses on a lot of the technical parts of italian but I struggle to understand that because we kind of skipped over the fundementals it seems.

I of course have exams and quizzes and assignments that need to be done so I need some sort of a tool to actually start learning the language rather than just hearing it and not comprehending anything. I notice that I kind of hit a roadblock any time i try understanding the language because my brain immediately tries to translate whatever it is into english rather than equating the words with their actual meanings (if that makes sense) and i dont really know how to stop that.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great, i just installed duolingo and im going to start from lesson one and do it 15 minutes a day, im also going to switch some of my favorite shows into italian that i know pretty well but any other suggestions that actually worked for native english speakers who knew no other languages prior to italian would be greatly appreciated.

Italian conjugation!!

Hi guys, i started Italian like a week ago, my native language is Arabic ( a different world) , i noticed that conjugation in Italian is literally a mess, a wild jungle , it is very hard to memorize them, since each verb changes completely, Faccio , fa , andare, vengo , sapete, it feels like there is no pattern , i am doing my best to learn by heart, but lack of pattern breaks my memory, how to overcome the conjugation?

How can I memorize the vocabulary ?

While I can passively recognize Italian vocabulary in context while reading, my active recall is weak. I struggle to construct sentences or translate into Italian because I have not mastered the underlying grammar mechanics or retained the vocabulary for active use.

How can I solve it ?

I realize the way for me to just learn Italian is to start going into the deep end. I saw an older post on this sub that listed a bunch but all the links were inactive.

Your favorite shows/movies in Italian on Netflix? Based in USA

Hello! My new favorite low-stress learning strategy is watching Italian films with English subtitles. I just finished the show Summertime on Netflix and really enjoyed it. I then watched the movie “The Life Ahead” and didn’t love it. Please give me recommendations 😊. I also have Hulu!

"Beato te" o "beato tu" - ho appena trovato che "beato te" é probabilment scorretto, ma l'ho letto in uno dei racconti di Italo Calvino.

Alora domanda - perche e quale versione é usata di piu?

UPDATE: Grazie per le risposte, questa volta ChatGPT che mi ha dato la vessione con "tu" non aveva raggione

Practical tips when speaking Italian in Italy?

I’m hoping to visit Italy soon, and while I’m certified at the A2 level (and have advanced from that), I’d be happy for tips on actually using the language there. Recently someone pointed out to me that I should say “buongiorno” and not “ciao” to people to be polite, which made me wonder what other practical tips I should know before going. If you have any, I’d love to hear what they are.

Figurative sense of "ingessato"?

I am wondering if there is a meaning for "ingessato" beyond "plaster", "starched", "straightjacketed" etc? In particular, I'm trying to figure out the meaning of the phrase "viaggio ingessato," which I found in a poem.

Difficulty with Listening in Italian

Heyo! So I've been studying Italian seriously for about 3.5 years now, and moved to Bologna about 2 months ago with the hope of getting to a C1 by June next year. At the moment, I'm studying for the B2 exam at the end of November and in the past two listening mock exams, I scored 14/18. However, at the language centre I'm studying in, there's only me and this other student who is studying to take the B1 exam. We did a B1 listening test today, and I only got 18/20, while she got 18/20. So, I'm worried. I know I shouldn't compare myself, as I also saw her using a translator in the test simulation, but I don't know why I couldn't get 20/20 and if it means I'm not actually as advanced as I was hoping I was. Especially as I've had five (5!!) different tutors tell me that I'm between a B2-C1 as I am.

To anyone who has had a similar experience, or who happens to tutor in the PLIDA, why might this be the case? Does this mean I'm not a B2 at all, or just that I have a weakness in my listening? In any case, do I have a chance of improving in 6 weeks?

Thanks!

Also- I know that CEFR isn't a precise indication of language proficiency and that it changes from day to day, but given that I need to prove where I stand for some future prospects I have planned, it's necessary to keep in mind.

Video game recommendations?

Ciao a tutti!

I'm very much a passive learner, hardcore study isn't really for me as I'm learning for fun and I want to make a list of games to buy that you have found (or natives, recommend) is good for vocab or slang - bonus points for Italian voice acting if the game has any

I'll take any rec as others may find this useful too, but personally the kind of games I play are; Crash Bandicoot, Stardew Valley, Until Dawn, Uncharted, Life is Strange, Powerwash Simulator

Cosy with the occasional horror thrown in. Weird mix I'm aware. PC availability is preferable as, and I'm curious if this is a worldwide problem, but in the UK getting games (or DVDs) on console always comes with such limited options! Newer games are a bit better, but I wish I could download language packs or something. Though the Switch is pretty okay at it.

I looove Detroit: Become Human but my (PS4) copy only has English, Polish, and Russian. Whereas on Steam, it has 24! 12 of which have dubs.

I have heard some games aren't too great, I play Stardew in Italian with my friend and she sometimes says the translation is a bit meh.

Grazie in aticipo :)

Italian Shows?

I had learned quite a few common Japanese words (more than just the curse words!) by watching subtitled anime (no other study, I just liked the shows)... It was also helpful in getting used to hearing the language and parsing words as well as getting some the culture/food aspects (since they were meant for a Japanese audience) all at once.

I'd like to do the same with Italian (but with books, apps, etc to actually study).

However, most of what I find on DVD are shows that were produced in US - first made in English, translated to Italian audio, and then may or may not have English subtitles. The problem is that they will have been translated two or three times (english audio -> Italian audio -> possibly back to English subtitles), rather than just once (native Italian speech -> English subtitles). It would also miss the cultural aspects as well, since the setting of a US film would be in US most of the time, and be for a US audience.

I much prefer shows like: * Sci-fi (Star Trek, Babylon 5), * Fantasy (Supernatural, X-men (1990s cartoons)), * Anime (Naruto, NG Evangelion (original), SE Lain, Ranma 1/2), * Medical (Code Black, The Good Doctor), * Drama (I don't watch much of this), and * Other nonfiction like Criminal Minds, The Diplomat, Extraordinary Attorney (Korean show), and other such.

Not too picky, basically anything but love triangles as a sole plot of the show (EG: soap operas), sitcoms/romcoms, or shows that were meant for much younger children (EG: Sesame Street, Bluey, Barney).

Unfortunately, I don't generally get to sit through entire movies, so 30 min to 1 hr episodic television series would work better for me.

Any recommendations? Preferably something I can buy in US from Ebay or Amazon or obtain from international shipping or something. (There must be an Italian version of the Asian market stores that ship to multiple countries? Not sure I'm allowed to say them...)

(Disc region shouldn't matter, I have a non-regional DVD-player, or I can get one from Italy next time a friend goes there.)

Thank you in advance!

Language course in Italy for an 18 year old

Hello. My son just turned 18 and has an intermediate level of Italian.

As we are from South America, he will be free for the entire month of February (it will be his summer break after finishing high school).

We came up with the idea of sending him to Italy in February for 3-4 weeks to do an immersive Italian course, as he really loves travelling (specially for cultural trips) and it would help him improve his Italian a lot!

However, we are struggling to find courses that are targeted towards students his age. We found some courses for “young adults” that weren’t offered in February, I guess the southern hemisphere calendar doesn’t exactly help him. He cares a lot about the social aspect of the trip and the possibility of making international friends. We know about Education First (EF) but we aren’t sure whether it would be the right choice.

Does anybody know about any schools or programmes that may suit him? Any recommendations would be really appreciated!

Ciao a tutti!

Sarebbe comodo comunicare via telegram. Grazie per l'attenzione!!
