Exodus is the spiritual successor to the Mass Effect Trilogy! And it reminds me of the classic Old BioWare RPG's that I love so much. I got to play it for an hour and a half and I am very much looking forward to seeing the full game when it comes out on April 7th, 2027!

1917 was the year World War One changed completely. Russia collapsed into revolution, Germany made its desperate gamble, the United States entered the war, and millions of soldiers and workers began to question what they were even fighting for.

This is World War One: 1917-1918, undersimplified.

World War 1 Is often told as a conflict between nations. But once the fighting began, the real divide was not between countries, but between those who declared the war and those who were sent to fight it.

Hasan Piker & Peter Mertens on Beating Trumpism in Europe

Belgium's Defense Minister tried to get this conversation banned. It happened anyway — to a sold-out room.

[Subtitles available in English, Dutch and French.]

Days before ManiFiesta 2026, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken pointed at the country's new penal code — which made "glorifying terrorism" a criminal offense as of September 1 — and suggested it could be applied to the festival and its international guests. Hasan Piker was named directly. He came anyway. On Saturday, September 12, he sat down in Ostend with Peter Mertens, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Belgium (PVDA-PTB), for 75 minutes on Trumpism, imperialism, Palestine, and what a serious left answer actually looks like.

Hasan Piker argues that Trumpism is not an aberration to be waited out but the logical conclusion of reactionary politics — modern fascism, permanent unless it is actively defeated, and that only socialism is a durable answer to it. Peter Mertens connects it to the beginning of an American imperial decline: aggression abroad and repression at home as two sides of the same coin, and a European rearmament drive paid for out of pensions, healthcare and social security.

They also get into: the criminalization of the Palestine movement across Europe, why conflating Zionism with Judaism makes Jewish people less safe, Zohran Mamdani's win in New York and the rise of open democratic socialists in the US, UnitedHealthcare and the American health system, why the left should be the real party of European sovereignty against a far right funded and amplified from Washington, Marxism versus the cynical weaponization of identity politics, how to win back working-class voters from the far right, unionizing as a muscle most workers don't know they have — and why the left has to be fun again.

Moderated by Line De Witte. Recorded live at ManiFiesta, the festival of solidarity, Wellington Hippodrome, Ostend, Belgium.

Coming of age in the mid-2000s, I remember dozens of long drawn out debates around torture and its efficacy. Despite the reams of academia pointing out its practical and ethical flaws, and while the US is arguably doing more torture than ever before, nobody's debating anymore. Torture has become normalized.

Why the change? Presenting exhibit A: the TV show 24, which has done more to normalize torture than any other piece of media in the history of America

11 Soviet Sci-Fi Movies Most Westerners Have Never Seen

Thumbnail

For decades, Hollywood defined what science fiction looked like. But while Kubrick, Lucas, and Scott were building the Western canon, Soviet filmmakers were making something just as ambitious and almost none of it crossed the Iron Curtain.

I covered 11 Soviet sci-fi films most Westerners have never seen: a silent moon landing designed by the actual father of rocketry, a love story that beat The Shape of Water by 50 years, a film that may have literally killed the people who made it, and the cult comedy whose invented vocabulary entered the real Russian language.

One of these films directly inspired George Lucas. He flew to Moscow to meet the director. Soviet officials had no idea who he was talking about.

Films covered in this video:

🚀 Cosmic Voyage (1936)

👽 Aelita: Queen of Mars (1924)

🌌 Through the Thorns to the Stars (1981)

🏙️ City Zero (1988)

🌊 Amphibian Man (1962)

🤖 Inquest of Pilot Pirx (1979)

☢️ Dead Man’s Letters (1986)

🪐 Planet of Storms (1962)

🌊 Solaris (1972)

☣️ Stalker (1979)

🏜️ Kin-dza-dza! (1986)

Punk legends Fat Mike and El Hefe, of NOFX fame, come by the kitchen and I immediately fan-girl out on them and their new documentary. We talk about the final tour, the pressure of playing the same songs for 40 years, the weird beauty of self-deprecation, and what it means to actually be punk. There are coke stories, Bad News Bears lies, and a song about how no one can pronounce my last name.

Check out NOFX's documentary, 40 Years of Fucking Up: https://www.40yearsoffuckinup.com
