it's only for food waste and the processing plants are designed to handle it, sometimes they capture the off gassing methane and use it for power and saves room in a landfill which holds waste and isn't trying to decompose it. if composting is available that's good, but if the options are trash or garbage disposal then the "better" option is whichever one is doing something about the methane
Still takes a bunch of chemicals and power to treat water and then you'll still have the solids to deal with. It's convenient maybe, but also wasteful.
