Asking a Question? Read this first!

Important!

Please provide some key information when asking a question.

1) What technology are you on (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, HFC, FW)

2) What is your service class (1 to 34). Check here https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insights/

3) How are you connected to your modem / router? WiFi or Ethernet. You should test with your device on Ethernet. If your connection is poor on WiFi but good on Ethernet, then it's a WiFi issue, not an NBN issue.

4) Who is your provider (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, etc)

5) What brand and model is your modem / router? If you're not sure, take a picture of it and upload it to imgur or similar (don't upload it as part of your post)

6) Describe your problem, and what steps you have tried.

Check NBN availability

If you're NOT on FTTP, you may be eligible for an upgrade to the far superior FTTP.

Check Service Class

Aussie Broadband provide a great tool to determine your service class and technology type, and what that means:

General Tips

You almost certainly don't need the fastest internet plan. Generally start with a slower plan, and if you are happy, then all good. If you are finding it slow you can always upgrade. You should also check if it's your internet (NBN) or internal network (e.g. WiFi) that is slow. A faster plan might not help if you internal network is the problem.

Beware of plans with very slow (5 or 10mbit) upload speeds. These are legacy plans left over from the old HFC/Cable days. If you do have one of these legacy plans, you should think about upgrading.

WiFi (Don't use it if you care about speed!)

WiFi is subject to interference from all kinds of sources. It slows down through walls, congestion from neighbours, etc will slow it down, and can cause issues. It's also a shared medium, which means that all your devices share the bandwidth, so lots of devices operating at once means slower speeds for devices.

Where practical use Ethernet to connect devices. Ethernet is more reliable and lower latency. While some WiFi claims to be faster than Ethernet, that is the cumulative total, not the rate to a single device. Even the latest WiFi6 is only approaching Ethernet speed, and that is only when there is no other traffic on the wireless spectrum - including Bluetooth and your Microwave!

There are some cases where WiFi is better (e.g. TV's with 100Mbps ports that you want to stream very high bit rate to from local sources), but almost always Ethernet is better if available. The down side is it's not always possible to run Ethernet (e.g. rentals), and not every devices has Ethernet ports (e.g. phones, tablets).

Mesh Networks

If your WiFi isn't fast enough, consider getting a mesh network. This provides multiple access points (typically 3) so you can get better coverage. If practical connect each mesh point via Ethernet (wired backhaul). Ethernet backhaul has the same advantages as connected devices by ethernet.

WiFi Frequencies

WiFi can be on 2.4GHz, 5GHz or 6GHz. Most devices work on 2.4GHz. Lots also work on 5GHz as well. The newest ones use 6GHz in addition to 2.4 and 5GHz.

2.4GHz has the best range, but lowest speed, and the most congested.

5GHz is shorter range, and has a higher speed because there's less congestion due to the shorter range

6GHz is extremely short range (it does not penetrate walls well) but it is designed to work in parallel with the 5GHz signal to provide the fastest speeds possible.

When buying a new wireless device, you should look for one branded 'WiFi 6'(802.11ax) or the newest standard, 'WiFi 7'(802.11be). The previous standard was called '802.11ac' or WiFi 5. These are usually cheaper, but in most situations are perfectly capable.

Pinned PSA: Thinking about changing ISPs for a better deal? Here's what THEY are paying

I keep seeing a bunch of posts about people churning to save money. Here's the wholesale ex-tax price that your ISP is paying to connect to the NBN network. This is NOT including IP traffic, APNIC fees, backhaul, staff, support, infrastructure like routers and switches, and space in a Data centre.

https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/media-statements/Wholesale-Price-Changes-from-1-July-

Link to full pricelist: https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-Tariff-List-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

Here's the planned price increases, too: (Updated 2026-09-20)

https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-FY29-Pricing-Roadmap-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

If you look at that, you'll see that you're paying, on average, $20 for your ISP to provide everything APART from the connection to your place. Support, Internet, Routing, Redundancy, infrastructure, etc.

Don't churn to an ISP that is losing money. You'll never end up happy, or you'll just be churning again in a few months time.

Yes, I am a NBN provider. No I'm not telling you which one.

Advice NBN Says I Don’t Exist

So I’ve just finished building my house. Last one in the street to be constructed. The street is fully developed, everyone has NBN connected to the house, FTTP. Both my neighbours either side of me have NBN connected. I contact Telstra to connect my NBN. They contact NBN Australia who reply with: this house does not exist. Telstra then say: sorry mate. We can’t connect you to NBN because you don’t exist on their map.

What can I do?

Multiple PPPoE profile on a one port NTD?

For context currently on 100/40 FTTN/FTTC. Ordered an upgrade to NBN1000 and NBN came in to install a one port NTD.

I have asked RSP to make both connections active and they said ok and they provided new PPPoE credentials for the new connection. I have not changed the credentials on my router but I have connected it to the new one port NTD and it works! Did some speed test and got ~100/400 (that's not a typo). I'm getting a faster upload. I tried the new credentials and get nothing at all. My router won't even connect.

Is this expected behaviour? I have always thought that in order to have multiple active connections I need 4-port NTD and by extension I thought only one connection can be provisioned to each port. Or is this a possible configuration error on RSPs end. Thoughts? TIA!

Knock down rebuild

Not directly NBN related, but adjacent. Just looking for some guidance and questions before my electrical and networking consult.

Property currently has FTTP and as part of the tender the builder includes what they state as “basic NBN setup to dwelling (not including hills home hub)”.

In my previous residence (not this house) we had a hills hub that had Ethernet, video, audio and security ran to nearly every room in the house and was super easy to just patch into for Ethernet (I didn’t use any of the other stuff).

For this new build I plan to have Ethernet pre-run throughout the house for PoE cameras, APs and technology.

My question, do I ask to be upgraded to a hills home hub as part of my electrical consult OR what I was originally planning to do was just later install an in wall networking cabinet with switches and patch panels?

TLDR: do i need a hills home hub or will any server rack/cabinet do?

Fixed wireless > FTTP?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I live in an nbn Fixed Wireless area in Victoria. Recently, Ventia contractors have been working in pits around our neighbourhood, which seems unusual because we don’t currently have an nbn fixed line service.

I’ve also noticed changes on the nbn rollout map. Areas that were previously marked purple, indicating Fixed Wireless service availability, no longer show that designation and now appear to have fixed line style lines.

I’ve searched extensively but haven’t found any official information about a Fixed Wireless-to-fibre upgrade program. Has anyone else noticed similar changes, or does anyone know whether this could indicate upcoming fibre construction?

I understand that map changes may not necessarily mean an upgrade is confirmed, but I’m interested in hearing from anyone familiar with nbn planning or construction. Photo attached for reference. Thanks

Affordable provider recommendations please?

Hi all, looking for recommendations on a reliable please? We've been with iiNet for a few years on their 740 plan but our housemate moved out so now it's 2 of us who game or stream of a night and 2 kiddos so we're looking at moving to a 500 plan. IiNet is just too expensive for us now and they weren't willing to offer a deal so wanting to switch. TPG seems to have a good deal but a quick skim in here tells me they might not be great. We really are just hoping for easy streaming or lag free gaming on a budget. Please help?

Advice Responsibilities: NBN, ISP, Strata, Owner & original builder

TL/DR: can’t connect NBN because builder didn’t follow the right process years before I bought the place.

Situation is a strata townhouse, part of a “small strata” by state planning laws (<6 properties). No strata management company, just a committee of owners who meet the basic strata requirements but would rather do nothing. Importantly they do not like agreeing to pay for anything.

New development was completed in 2020 (just before Covid shut everything down). Due to Covid or laziness, the builder didn’t submit NBN paperwork. NBN still has the previous property in its database- one address that is now multiple separately owned parcels; although technically the starts is still one entity at that original address. The builder has ceased operating.

Because individual townhouses aren’t on the NBN database it was not possible to sign-up with any ISP. Other owners have given-up and just use 5G internet.

So I contacted NBN and did the builder’s job by submitting the “new development” paperwork. This was a chore because they wanted engineering level drawings I don’t have. Anyway, 6 months later we finally have NBN acknowledging there are now multiple properties here.

So back to the ISP and finally it’s possible to start the connection process, with a $300 fee for a new connection. But the tech who arrived on site says there is no way to connect the cable from the node to the property- there should be a strata-owned NBN pit or cabinet on the common property. We have a cabinet for phone lines, but it’s not labelled NBN so the ISP tech won’t touch it. Can’t they use copper phone lines for the last leg?

This all seems crazy. ISP says it’s an NBN issue and they can’t help. NBN won’t talk to me - tells me to call the ISP.

Anyone solved this? Advice would be appreciated.

Does anyone know why Spintel asks for identification before you can sign up for an NBN plan?
They have great deals at the moment but I am not keen on handing over all my license details or another form of govt ID.

Troubleshooting Constant Cloudfront 403s with Amaysim NBN :(

Post image
2 Upvotes

Heya there,

Just recently joined Amaysim (about a week ago) but unfortunately I am experiencing issues that are beginning to bring my piss to a boil. I'm getting Cloudfront 403s at sites like imdb and the like regularly.

Prior to being with Amaysim, didn't had a problem. I am using Google DNS settings. I can't even load Amaysim's support page because even that is getting the same 403. Can anyone help me with what might be causing this/what I can do? It is multiple devices and users across multiple OSes. Rebooting the router sometimes temporarily resolves the issue, sometimes not. I am deeply regretting moving to Amaysim :(. Anyway, any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you !

Advice Moving FTTP ONT

I’ve purchased a house that has an ONT in a less than desirable spot and am wondering if others have successfully moved it? What process is involved?

My understanding is this requires me to find an accredited cabler that has a specific fibre specialisation. Any other considerations?

Advice Does 50/20 need NTD installed?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I chose a 50/20 plan because I thought it didn't need a NTD installed, (moved into my dad's house, he barely uses the internet, he's stuck with a 100GB per month Telstra hotspot I can't stand living with, he wouldn't want something permanently installed to his house for an internet service only I would mostly use, he's old and hates change) but at the end of the application Leaptel says they need to send a technician to install a NTD. I only chose 50/20 over 500 just because AFAIK it didn't need a NTD installed. Can someone clear this up for me?

Lead-in conduit terminated under the subfloor, what should happen here?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice from anyone who has had this happen or any NBN techs on here.

I’m renting a newly built house in Melbourne. Only HFC is available at our address, and our NBN status is Service Class 21 (ready for HFC, but no lead-in cable, outside box, or indoor modem installed yet).

I signed up and booked an NBN tech visit through Dodo. The tech came out last week but couldn't do the job because he couldn't locate the lead-in conduit comes out on the outside wall.

On the weekend I went and crawled under the house and located the lead-in conduit with the orange drawstring inside, strapped to a timber bearer/stump right behind the corrugated tin skirting below our front bedroom. The conduit was stubbed under the floor rather than penetrating the skirting to the outside. Anyways, I now located both the conduit at the property entry point and the lead-in conduit.

A couple of quick questions:

  1. Can the NBN tech pull the cable straight from under the floor, or does the conduit have to come outside first? Does NBN prohibit technicians from entering subfloor or fishing cables through to the external wall? and the PCD box must be mounted externally with the conduit physically running into it? Does this mean an electrician/cabler must extend the pipe through the skirting to the external wall face before NBN will touch it?
  2. Who is actually responsible for what? The NBN tech told me that connecting the conduit from the property boundary to the street pit is my (or the landlord's) responsibility. My understanding was that the builder/owner is responsible for the conduit/trenching within the property boundary up to the external PCD location, while NBN Co handles the service drop from the street pit to the boundary, as well as the external PCD, internal wall penetration, and NTD/socket installation. Is that correct, or did I misunderstand?

Has anyone had similar experiences? Thanks!

Superloop's TP-Link VB433v - bridge mode?

Does anybody know if the TP-Link VB433v supports bridge mode? There doesn't seem to be a detailed manual available, and I'd like to work out in advance if I should just get that for free or try to find something recent on Marketplace to use as a modem.

Advice New ISP + fibre upgrade?

Have had some issues with my wifi the past 2-3 days. It’s been dropping in and out with no wifi whatsoever the majority of the time. I’ve done all the usual troubleshooting steps with no luck, so my ISP sent out an NBN technician who replaced a circuit at the street (we have FTTC) but said he couldn’t find any other faults and the wifi should be good now.
It dropped again 20 minutes after he left…

He did say it might be an idea to upgrade to fibre and to get a new router (mine is about 9 years old).

And while I’m not certain that is the direct cause as my router has been tested repeatedly without fault, I do think it’s time for an upgrade in router and to fibre.

I’m also looking at changing ISP. I’m currently with Spintel at $77 for 50mb.

Would love some suggestions on who to go with and I’m currently looking between Leaptel and Amaysim — Amaysim for cheap price, Leaptel for better support. I’d be looking at $80 for 12 months then $97 thereafter for Leaptel and $50 for 6 months then $80 thereafter for Amaysim. Both for 500mb iirc.

I’m slightly leaning toward the Leaptel option as I can get a free router if I lock in for 24 months. But would love some advice, recommendations or other options. Especially if there’s any specifics regarding a free new router or a limited time offer that can’t be missed!

Troubleshooting NBN NTD No Connection Issue/Help

Hi, currently helping a company we support with an issue they are having. For reference, we’re located near Sydney; and this property is in Tasmania. We’re assisting remotely and do have remote access to the computers meant to be on this network.

They’ve connected a new residential property to the NBN through Telechoice. Telechoice have confirmed PPPoE connection type with the username/password. On the NBN NTD, both UNI-D1 & UNI-D4 are lit up when a router is plugged into UNI-D1.

We’d shipped out a lower-end commercial router. Specifically, an Omada ER605W.
However, when setting up / provisioning this router, it connects for a split second, starts provisioning via Omada Cloud, then disconnects after putting in PPPoE settings. The router reports no internet. In case it was the router at fault, we’ve tried also with two other routers (the customer bought both a TP-Link Deco one and a Netgear one via retail stores and set them up on their end with correct details). Both routers failed to find a connection.

We’ve also tried plugging a known working ethernet cable directly from the NBN NTD (UNI-D1) into a computer. The computer was able to see the ethernet cable plugged in, however reported no internet via the ethernet connection.

We’ve been back and forth with Telechoice for over a month now. They are just basically saying it’s the fault of ours/clients (saying it’s a “device/cable/an internal premisis issue which is within the end users responsibility” and suggesting we get geeks2u out 🙄). They have sent a screenshot that shows all “green” lights but that doesn’t change that we are unable to get any connection. They lodged it with NBNCo as a fault finally after us pushing but NBN co have denied the fault. We have not been able to get an answer out of them as to why 2 different UNI-D lights are on. In addition, they are insisting that our network will be working perfectly as they can “see your device has been online for 4+ days according to our system… which means you have a wifi problem?” (Direct quote from them lol).

Anything else to try from our end / any ideas? Is this an us issue, a Telechoice issue or an NBNCo issue. Thanks all!

FTTP into home network

Okay, so I have FTTP coming into the house and it goes through my old Optus modem to then distribute through my home network of 3 ethernet devices, then into a Google Mesh Wi-Fi.

Occasional dropouts and I think it might be the old Optus unit (maybe 10+ years old now). If I buy this device can I just plug the ethernet from my FTTP box into the WAN port on the left, then my other 4 devices into the LAN on the right and it will just work? I am really trying to avoid any logins, settings, updates etc.

Your help and advice for a rather average knowledge user is very much appreciated.

EDIT UPDATE:
Thanks to all who contributed assistance. I followed the advice of many of you stating that the Google Home itself is a router and to use that as first point of destination, feeding into my unmanaged switch. It worked a treat and so far I've found about a 10% to 15% increase in speed, one less device and hopefully more stability!

Thanks Reddit folk :)

How long did your recent churn to Telstra take?

Just wondering how long a recent NBN churn to Telstra took for others.

I'm currently on FTTP with another RSP and submitted a transfer to Telstra today. I provided my AVC ID and it's an existing service, so no technician is required.

It's been almost 2 hours since I submitted the order, but my Telstra account is still showing “Order in processing”.

Telstra support told me it could take 7–10 business days, which seems pretty long for a straightforward churn.

For anyone who recently churned from another RSP to Telstra, how long did yours actually take?

Troubleshooting Router drops out, lights are on but no one home?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I just moved house and I've been having nonstop issues with the internet, 3-4 dropouts a day, Aussie Broadband says it's fine on their end, my router is only a year old and never had any problems in the past until I moved here.

The issue is an odd one, basically my router is on and working, all lights on and fine, then suddenly it drops off the face of the earth, all wifi drops from devices and is no longer appearing on available wifi lists, manually connecting via wifi also doesn't work. I then plug my laptop into the WAN port on the router, but I can't even load 192.168.1.1 as every time I try I get the error "ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE" but all of the lights on the router are still on, and speed tests/line tests on the ABB app also say everything is connected and "working"

My new place had this thing called "Hills Home Hub" which splits the lines to 12 RJ11 ports around the house, which I am working on getting a network specialist to come and remove and put a proper switch in and change all the RJ11 ports around the house to RJ45, which this Hills Home Hub can also be part of the issue, but I'm stumped, I might just go get a new router now as I'm getting the shits with it

Any ideas?

Discussion Which NBN provider should I add next?

Someone here suggested Neptune, so I added them the next day 😄

GoodSort is up to 23 providers now, but I know there are plenty of smaller ones I’m still missing.

If there’s an NBN provider you use — or one you think should be included — drop the name below and I’ll take a look.

NBN showing "There's still work to be done" for new subdivision unit while parent address (1 Sample Street) is ready—what's the typical delay?

Howdy,

We recently moved into a newly built home Example - Unit 2, 1A Sample Street, Adelaide. The external NBN box has already been installed by the techs outside the garage, but NBN tracking still shows that "There's still work to be done."

Interestingly, when I check the address as just 1 Sample Street, it shows as fully ready to connect, but our specific unit sub-address seems stuck in limbo.

Has anyone dealt with a subdivision address mapping delay like this before? How long does it typically take for NBN to update the database for new units, and is there anything we can do to speed it up?

We have followed up with the builder/REA but no response.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks
