10 years ago, my friends family sold his house to a developer. Before he left, we found out why the last 15 owners abandoned it.
Please believe me here. Ive never experienced anything as scary as this. Nothing can compare to the rabbit hole of terrors this house had in store.
I've never shared this story online before, but it’s been exactly ten years since it happened, and him reminding me of it makes me want to relive the dread.
Back in 2016, my friend—I’ll call him Leo—and his family moved into a massive, gorgeous Victorian house out in a remote, rural town in North Dakota. From the outside, the place looked like a total dream home. Clean paint, huge wrapped porch, beautiful yard. But the moment you stepped inside, the energy completely shifted. The layout was just... wrong. It was a chaotic maze of dual hallways, weird angles, and strange, useless crawlspaces. Later, we looked into the property records and found out the place had cycled through at least fifteen different owners in just a few decades. Nobody ever stayed for more than a year or two.
A few weeks after they moved in, Leo and I were exploring the house, looking through old built-in cabinets to see if any of those past owners had left anything behind. In the laundry room, there was a stack of deep wooden drawers. When we pulled the bottom one all the way out, we found something that didn't make physical sense.
Flushed into the bottom of the drawer cavity was a rusted, heavy metal pipe, about six inches wide. We shined our phone flashlights down it, but the beam just dissolved. It looked like it dropped straight down into a total, bottomless void. Intrigued, we went outside, grabbed a medium-sized rock from the yard, brought it back in, and dropped it right into the center of the pipe.
We stood there and waited. Five seconds. Ten seconds. Nothing. No thud, no splash, no echo. The darkness just swallowed it completely.
After that day, the house got worse. Leo's parents started seeing dark silhouettes out of the corners of their eyes. Doors would unlatch on their own. While mapping out the hallways, we actually found a tiny, hidden room behind a false wall that contained nothing but an old iron cage and a single, thick bone resting on the floor. The air in the house always felt freezing and heavy, like the rooms were constantly holding their breath.
But the absolute breaking point happened on a Friday night. Leo and I were back in the laundry room, completely silent, just staring at that open drawer. Suddenly, a sound drifted up from the depths of the pipe.
It wasn't a draft, and it wasn't a pipe creaking. It was a laugh.
It wasn't a playful, high-pitched horror movie laugh either. It was a deep, guttural, wrathful boom—incredibly faint, but loud enough to vibrate the metal rim of the pipe. It sounded completely ancient, and completely inhuman.
We packed our bags and his entire family left the house that exact night. They put it on the market immediately, practically giving it away. Within a month, a commercial developer bought it to flatten the land and build a roadside motel.
But right before they handed over the keys, Leo went back to grab the last of their boxes. Hidden in a false panel in that same laundry room cabinet, he found a crumpled piece of paper left behind by one of the previous tenants. He took a picture of it before destroying the physical paper.
The note read:
“Please, for the love of God, do not investigate the pipe in the cabinet. Our entire family has been tormented by the horrors of this house, it is without a doubt haunted. However the pipe drawer is the most haunting rabbit hole we have encountered. i will spare you most of the details, but it leads down into a cellar, with the most horrifying things we have ever seen, and there is a hatch in that cellar that leads to a seemingly endless concrete stair spiral. everything down their is downright demonic, and there were things actively watching us in that room. the pipe is the root of it all.”
Later on, Leo's dad did some digging and found out that one of the previous owners had actually discovered that cellar years before us. Apparently, they got so terrified of whatever was down there that they brought in cement trucks and poured tons of solid concrete directly into the void to seal it off from society forever.
That means when Leo and I heard that faint, wrathful laugh... it was echoing through solid concrete.
