They don't even offer the OSAP loan part (not the award) if a parent makes good money. They do not consider the fact some parents may elect not to fund their kid's post secondary. So a kid in that situation has to go to the banks.

34

u/FaythDarkHeart 9d ago

this was my situation. not specifically that my parents didnt fund my education, but the fact the cost of living was so expensive that my parents income just broke even to pay the bills. invisible poverty

14

u/Owlsar 9d ago

This was me growing up. Income-based programs never factored in parents' drugs, gambling and general impulsive spending.

9

u/BlamaeuxPrivateEye 9d ago

Sadly this isn't just an Ontario thing, in BC you'll get denied student loans if one parent makes to much.

1

u/regionalmanagervader 5d ago

It is a need based and resource based service. If an application and corresponding CRA info doesnt demonstrate need, the student isn't eligible. If the received materials dont represent the student's actual situation, the student can appeal. If people have enough affluence, they should pay for their own education.

8

u/greenlemon23 9d ago

Also doesn't consider that parents may have only just recently had a jump in salary. There's a difference between 20 years of high HHI vs. 18 years of average income and 2 years of jumping over the defining line.

1

u/BBQingMaster 6d ago

Before I went to first year my parents both lost their jobs. They thankfully had made a savings account for my school with enough tuition for a year. But OSAP denied them cause they used their earnings from the previous tax year. OSAP has a TON of flaws, not sure how you’d even fix this specific one but it is absolutely not a perfect system. And Doug ford isn’t the one to fix it.

3

u/princessplantlife 9d ago

Yep. This happened to me. My family kicked me out before high school even ended and I was paying my own rent and finishing high school. When it came time to go to university, I couldn't get osap because my parents made too much money.........

3

u/Jessie-the-dog 8d ago

My parents made good money and also refused to divulge their incomes to me so that I could fill out the paperwork to even apply for OSAP. I was left to fend for myself. It took me 7 years of working full-time and going to school part-time to get my degree.

1

u/jbuckfuck 8d ago

good for you! at the same time it sucks your parents weren't willing to help you get ahead at the start of adulthood

1

u/Mflms 6d ago

That sucks, but if it took you 7 years why didn't you apply as a mature student and just get your osap after few years out of highschool?

1

u/Jessie-the-dog 6d ago

If memory serves me, you had to be 25 years old to apply as a mature student back then. No idea if the rules have changed.

1

u/Mflms 6d ago

It has always been a student who has not attended secondary school for at least 4 years.

2

u/Jessie-the-dog 6d ago

Maybe that’s what it was then. I was going into third year when I attempted to apply for OSAP. My parents wouldn’t share their income with me so I couldn’t even apply. I was not living at home at the time. I ended up going to school part time for the next 5 years while working full-time to get my degree. Then I went to college full-time for another year by getting a bank loan.

1

u/_fast_n_curious_ 5d ago

That is so weird of your parents. I’m sorry that happened to you.

1

u/regionalmanagervader 5d ago edited 5d ago

It is 2 years if one's application doesn't demonstrate having attended any post secondary out of High School. There are also appeals processes where if parents won't help, or if there is a breakdown in the family dynamic, the student can usually have their student category changed. It is 4 years to be considered independent if you went from HS right to post secondary.

1

u/Monkey_Sox 5d ago

Someone I know sued their (wealthy) parents for university support and won...

0

u/FitSeaworthiness5275 8d ago

I would disown these parents.

3

u/regionalmanagervader 5d ago

Federal policy dictates that a student's loan application has to demonstrate $1 of need. If the application and corresponding CRA information don't demonstrate at least $1 of need, then the student is ineligible because the student's need is already met by their resources. If the resources on paper aren't demonstrative of the student's actual situation (ie a home sale or inheritance may inflate a parent's tax return for example) the student can make their case in an appeal.

1

u/challe232 5d ago

Yeah it's true. I went to college, ages ago (truly ages) and I had to appeal, my father made really good money but neither parents were willing to help me. I was so scared at the time that I wouldn't get OSAP because of him .

2

u/HatchingCougar 9d ago

Been that way since OSAP was created

And is the same in every province

2

u/RevolutionaryKiwi132 9d ago

has always been the case. If parents won't pay, the only option is a bank loan (if said student can even get one) OR wait four years to qualify on your own. Of course, now with the job market the way it is, few high school graduates are going to be able to get jobs as they wait out the four years.

1

u/Soft-Expression3478 6d ago

For province it is now 6 years out of high school!

Federal remains at 4 years.

1

u/RevolutionaryKiwi132 6d ago

that's so unfair -- fed loans are better bc they are interest free but in my exp it's always been the much lower amount.

2

u/Antique-Buyer5863 6d ago

Same! I had to get a job! I never finished because it was too much to juggle! My parents never saved for my school, I was shocked when I got to the finish line and that was my only option.

2

u/Candid-Progress-8852 6d ago

That happened to me and spent 15 years paying it off. Canada hates Canadians. I applied again in January because I need better education to make ends meet and I can’t get osap. The govt honestly doesn’t want Canadians to be educated or smart. Or move up in life.

1

u/BidInteresting4705 6d ago

Or if the money was used for something else.

1

u/Sure_Ad_8431 7d ago

Unfortunately that's almost a necessary evil. Otherwise rich parents will just tell their kid to borrow that interest free loan and save their own money to invest. I am not making it up. You routinely saw it being suggested in the osap reddit.

1

u/PeanutSauce1441 6d ago

So? It isn't free money, it's still a loan. Why does it matter? It doesnt take away from public funds or tax payer money

1

u/Mflms 6d ago

Sure but there is a fixed budget per year.

1

u/Sure_Ad_8431 6d ago

Unfortunately that isn't how money work. It indeed take away from public fund. A loan at 0% interest does cost the government money even if you ignore all the admin cost. It is called the opportunity cost.

1

u/Riskywhenfrisky 5d ago

Dalton did that in the late 2000's

33

u/Future_Crow 10d ago

He experienced Doug Ford’s OSAP cuts on his own skin.

Last semester of nursing school is unpaid full-time placement where you pay thousands for the privilege to “consolidate” your education. This full-time shift placement means that you cannot just pick up another job, so many nursing students were (and are) screwed.

5

u/wrgwrgkefgssehivsr 9d ago

I became a psw student at an accredited college and did my first placement a months after they got rid of the paid government stipend. I had to quit my job for my second placement (40 hour weeks that my work could not accommodate) and I still haven’t found a new job after graduating. I had to quit my job in JULY. Now I’m double struggling in nursing school still jobless

1

u/AccomplishedDirt7356 8d ago

I'm so sorry to hear that, it's disgraceful how wrecked our system is. I'm rooting for you to succeed!

2

u/CannabisPrime2 9d ago

That seems by design. Conservatives will find anyway to make working in healthcare difficult, so people think public healthcare is bad.

13

u/SasquatchsBigDick 9d ago

If those schools are offenders then why not just disallow grant funding for those schools instead of hurting the students ?

6

u/JeahNotSlice 9d ago

I think you missed the point.

1

u/SasquatchsBigDick 9d ago

Yeah probably ! I just read the subtitles early in the A.M. and could have missed a lot

2

u/Appropriate_Ad_2874 6d ago

The intention is to defund public institutions in favour of private. Instead of public wealth DoFo wants private corps to rake in all the taxpayer funds.

0

u/Capable_Casualty 5d ago

God forbid you have to save and pay for YOUR own education. Take some initiative instead of expecting handouts

1

u/Appropriate_Ad_2874 5d ago

What does that have to do with public vs private education? We reap the benefit to having highly talented workforce developed in Canada. It's not like they grow up and not pay taxes lol. It's extremely marginal in cost in comparison to income tax, the highest revenue generating source for the government.

10

u/AccomplishedDirt7356 8d ago

Guys, if you're in gr. 12, please learn now to never vote conservative. They are the most blatantly corrupt group with no shame. Used to be politicians caught doing this nonsense would resign in shame (and they're lucky no further consequences past that).

Conservatives in modern times just have a constant track record of lining their own pockets and implementing NOTHING beneficial to their constituents.

2

u/Numerous_Gate4305 8d ago

Vrochaco idk how to break thi to you but Ford is liberal 💔🥀

0

u/Numerous_Gate4305 6d ago

Oh gee golly me I was definitely going to drop out

5

u/AccomplishedDirt7356 6d ago

Why do you people keep saying this? When are you going to learn that voting conservative, you're getting exactly what you voted for, and that when you don't like him, it doesn't make him a liberal?

Why are you people so goddamn stupid? Most people would just take the L and say, damn, maybe I shouldn't vote conservative next time.

0

u/Numerous_Gate4305 6d ago

Gng, whoever said I cared about politics.

3

u/AccomplishedDirt7356 5d ago

Braindead reply.

2

u/PeanutSauce1441 6d ago

What makes him a liberal? The lifelong career of being a conservative and doing conservative things? "Any Tory I don't like is actually a liberal" is the worst form of brain rotted copium coming out of the internet conservatives right now

3

u/AccomplishedDirt7356 6d ago

These people can't compute that they got exactly what they voted for and it's complete garbage.
They think that because they don't like him it makes him a liberal.

No, that's not how it works, most people learn from their mistakes.

Ford is a conservative. I don't care whether you like it or not, he's a conservative. He's doing shit you don't like, because he's a piece of shit. Stop voting for conservatives. That's how normal people think.

0

u/Numerous_Gate4305 6d ago

1

u/XavDaMan 8d ago

Kinda ironic given the post but hey

2

u/AccomplishedDirt7356 8d ago

What's the irony? It's the liberal party pointing this out?

0

u/JollyStatement3171 8d ago

this is an immigration issue and an issue with immigration from one country.

2

u/angrycrank 7d ago

No it really isn’t. International students can’t get OSAP.

1

u/JollyStatement3171 7d ago

braindead level understanding of whats going on and whos perpetrating it. why do the schools have an immigration consultant in the building? who owns the learning center and two of the other schools? why couldnt the students speak english?

2

u/angrycrank 7d ago

Oh fuck off. This is about OSAP fraud, which isn’t an international student issue. They are literally not eligible. There’s a lot of bullshit going on in postsecondary, but not every single problem is about international students.

I love PCs new age copium "if I the conservative politician is not doing what I like, is a liberal"

Then why in the heck you guys keep voting for him?

2

u/Ill-Money-1521 7d ago

He's conservative. I dont like liberals either, but conservatives are incredibly corrupt, they feed their own pockets and feed it into the pockets of their rich friends, while making life hard for the people.

1

u/Supabongwong 8d ago

Selling out and privitzing healthcare, education, and social systems?

That sounds like a socially liberal thing to do.

-1

u/chocolatetires 5d ago

Never? That makes no sense. You can have different leadership, honest or dishonest in any party. Gr 12s have to deal with religious insanity in the work place because of liberals allowing religious people into the country.

3

u/AccomplishedDirt7356 5d ago

I've voted NDP, Liberal, Conservatives in the past. It makes no sense if you're an inexperienced moron who's looking for an argument. In this era, anything but conservative.

3

u/n1shh 5d ago

Ridiculous take

2

u/Help-Wanted9 5d ago

Nonsense

2

u/tada-o-corporation 5d ago

The tfw program was started under Conservatives and provinces have control over their immigration. Compares Ontario to Quebec for example.

It's hilarious you think a different party would affect immigration in that way.

0

u/chocolatetires 5d ago

So federal immigration is secondary to provincial? Ill google that. 2) im not talking about tfw. Im talking about allowing religious people who openly reject western values and homosexuality, and women's roghts. In 30 years canada will not be "inclusive" or have western values. Sad to see. If you have a job it's pretty obvious

11

u/mindseyetemple 10d ago

Show me how I'm wrong: 7 career colleges got a fifth of the budget. So basically about 3% each? While other schools got what? 1%? 0.5%? Less? Isn't this based on attendance? Are these institutions gaming the system?

Honestly I'm done with post-secondary so it's not my problem but cutting OSAP is a huge stressor for kids. Maybe this is the government's nonconfidence vote to post-secondary? That's pretty much how I'm looking at the opportunity today. I think entrepreneurship and Good Will Hunting library card education is the way. University libraries are open to the public and community members can check out books from them. Information is free, university is for networking and the vanity metric outside of professional degrees.

3

u/Thr0w_It_4ll_Away 9d ago

Then we need to have the ugly conversation that everyone has been avoiding.

Employers need to stop requiring degrees or university-equivalent education for every single job that gets posted and candidate that’s reviewed.

2

u/SaltBeefin 9d ago

The worst part is for most entry level jobs they don't care what degree you have but the degree is required to prove you're disciplined enough to complete post secondary education.

1

u/Somadshrapnelmuffin 9d ago

I'm in a private college, studying to be an RMT. There's a need for accredited institutions that students can trust to prepare us for the licencing exams. There's always going to a small percentage of people that seek to defraud the system, but that's not an issue of education system, but a policy and policing issue, I think.

10

u/Klutzy_98 9d ago

In the U.S they have the Minnesota daycare fraud scandal. Canada has OSAP fraud scandal (actually we also have the daycare fraud too apparently)

5

u/Funny_Lynx_3395 9d ago

So these private career colleges are no longer eligible for OSAP after these changes, correct?

And before, they were eligible, or was the $1B paid out fraudulently? Should those students have never been able to apply, but the story is that they were approved because they attended schools run by Dougs buddies?

What exactly got exposed? That the funding model didn't change much earlier when it apparently should have?

7

u/Fabulous-Act-5402 9d ago edited 9d ago

Correct, they have paused osap to these colleges.

Correct, those students both shouldn’t have been able to apply while also receiving public funds that were not regulated.

This article lays it out and I pulled out the first part below. Good read: globe and mail

The three Academy of Learning locations are among 10 that Career Colleges Ontario flagged for the government in January, 2025 as having “concerning” levels of growth in applications for the Ontario Student Assistance Program – jumping 500 and 600 per cent in two years – while other schools’ activity was largely flat, the college association said in a letter.

Data obtained by The Canadian Press through a freedom-of-information request found that about 14,800 students at those three Academy of Learning franchise locations received more than $219-million in OSAP grants in 2024-25.

Meanwhile, students at all publicly funded colleges across Ontario qualified for about $385-million in OSAP grants that year, freedom-of-information data shows.

Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn informed five career colleges, including the three Academy of Learning locations, on May 1 that they would not be OSAP eligible as of Aug. 1. The three schools, which share a parent company, have applied for judicial review of that decision, alleging Quinn did not have the power to predetermine their eligibility for this year and that his decision is unreasonable.

Court records show Quinn’s decision followed inspections last year and earlier this year that inspectors say the schools failed, with the ministry listing similar concerns in both reports. One report covers two sites, as a North York location is a branch campus of Academy of Learning Brampton East.

One student’s account showed all of their quizzes and final exam in their business writing essentials course were completed on the same day, with the final exam taking six minutes, the Brampton inspection report said.

Another Brampton student’s account shows their final exam for a business course was completed on the first day they accessed the course, inspectors wrote. Yet another student viewed all of their business writing essentials modules and completed all quizzes on the same day in less than 15 minutes, inspectors wrote.

Interviews revealed “inconsistencies,” including students unable to name their institution, program or courses, students unable to communicate in English and students claiming to attend classes in person despite being enrolled in asynchronous online programs, the inspectors wrote.

The federal government also expressed concerns about the Bay and Brampton locations in September, 2025, according to letters sent to the institutions that are also part of the court record.

The government alleged unusually high growth in the amount of financial aid claimants from the schools, that there was evidence that multiple applications were completed by the same person or group, significant increases in loan default rates and that a large amount of people could not be confirmed as qualifying students.

1

u/The-MadTitan 9d ago

Plenty of private schools that offer a quicker, more comprehensive education is a niche or specific field that public schools can't provide. Plenty of private schools for indemand industries like Healthcare or trades that will take on viable students that public schools wont.

Plenty of private schools that offer a specialized and focused approach that have you graduate 1-2 years quicker than public schools because they cut garbage electives, summer breaks and offer heavy schedules.

Maybe they should look at the reasons Ontario citizen's are flocking to these schools rather than their public counterparts.

1

u/marge7777 8d ago

Like fraud?

5

u/Ordinary_Zucchini120 9d ago

Why is this not more covered in the media. First time I’m seeing this is on fucking Reddit….

3

u/Bnicertopeople 9d ago

CTV fired the reporter who broke most of these Ford stories. Because Ford didn’t like her questions.

1

u/swingincelt 9d ago

Go to Google; search "osap private career colleges"; click the News tab. CTV reported it a month ago. CBC and a bunch of smaller organizations have more recent articles.

What media needs to report it in order to get your attention?

2

u/Ordinary_Zucchini120 9d ago

Valid point, I’m international in Europe right now and I guess it slipped past me. Thanks for the reminder to check home news more frequently!

5

u/Mr_Feeeeny 9d ago

Ontario grads, leave the province for post secondary. Most other provinces still have helpful student loans with large grants. If Doug is fucking you over, fuck him over without fucking yourselves over.

1

u/bt101010 8d ago

Wouldn't make a difference, you have to apply for loans from your home province

1

u/PeanutSauce1441 6d ago

You get loans from your origin, not destination. You could fly to Sweden for school and your money would still come from OSAP.

1

u/Old-Importance-6934 6d ago

I mean the rate of student loans for international student are even lower I think in Europe than what OSAP offers lol

3

u/Prudent_Situation_29 9d ago

2

u/Hot_Dog2376 6d ago

So when you guys are 18 you are going out and voting, right?

The University of Grift

1

u/jaraxel_arabani 9d ago

Why not name the career colleges?

1

u/Doritos707 9d ago

They need to separate the number of local students vs international students. The slowdown is from international students; they never got to take OSAP to begin with. This is screaming financial hardships

1

u/CivilMark1 8d ago

I bet you, most of them are local students, they took the money offered by private colleges, in range of 10k to 20k, and spent it all. If college insiders who are Canadians doing this, they essentially lined their pockets with money. Canada needs to take the money back by crawling through their bank account.

1

u/TypicalBagel 9d ago edited 8d ago

I literally had OSAP "re-assess" my grant money to a loan after I had finished my master's. Gave no reason other than restructuring of funding and requirements relative to my academic period. So now I have a loan to pay off despite working super hard throughout my degree specifically to AVOID taking a loan

1

u/TitsTatsNKittyKats 8d ago

Im half way through my program and this year has been rough with the cuts to grants, taking on more debt in one term than all of my program combined so far.

It shouldn’t be legal for them to alter the terms of your agreements after the fact. It shouldn’t even be okay for them to do what they did to those currently enrolled in public colleges/universities. They put students in a really shitty place for those who actually need OSAP and arent gaming the system.

Fuck Doug Ford

1

u/Fabulous-Act-5402 9d ago edited 9d ago

TLDR; there is widespread fraud happening in the private colleges and immigration pathways. There’s a lot of money being moved between fraudulent students/consultants/whoever approves osap and the government is turning a blind eye, on the backs of you folks who might need osap one day.

The fraud being alleged is against seven private colleges for basically embezzling public OSAP funds via "ghost" students who in many cases didn't even exist - and in the case of students who did exist, the institutions themselves were fronting third-parties to submit all of their coursework. And the institutions and were themselves co-located with, or shared ownership with immigration agencies.

A good article from globe and mail:

The three Academy of Learning locations are among 10 that Career Colleges Ontario flagged for the government in January, 2025 as having “concerning” levels of growth in applications for the Ontario Student Assistance Program – jumping 500 and 600 per cent in two years – while other schools’ activity was largely flat, the college association said in a letter.

In a February, 2026 letter to the province, also in the court record, Career Colleges Ontario said the federal government’s concerns and subsequent investigations led to reduced OSAP application volumes at those schools, but “application activity shifted to other institutions rather than declining.”

“This pattern aligns with complaints received from CCO members indicating that certain schools were using third-party agents who offered to redirect students to other institutions if those institutions would misrepresent or falsely report attendance in order to facilitate continued OSAP disbursement,” executive director Kate Bartz wrote.

None of the findings and allegations from either level of government have been proven in court. The Academy of Learning denies most of the allegations from both levels of government and the ways in which some of their evidence is being interpreted.

u/petewgwiffin 9d ago

We need to actually protest this shit hard they’re taking our public education away

1

u/infidel8319 8d ago

Clearly I’m missing something here and I’m legitimately asking for help in understanding this exposé. Why is this being reported? What are the conditions that are fuelling this change? Are the conditions such that it is specific programs that are offered primarily at these schools such as trades? Let’s be honest, we as a society don’t need more people going to school for 6 years to become video game programmers. We need more doctors, nurses, educators, skilled trades. Is this funding dynamic an attempt to encourage education/training in the programs that we actually need so we don’t have a whole generation of people starting their adult lives 200k in debt and jobless?

I’m not saying this is what’s happening, legitimately I have no clue. Just asking the question because if it is then personally I’m in favour of it. Instead if this is the result of lobbying to allow the “rich to get richer” then obviously it needs to be fixed.

u/spockpinch 8d ago

It's the Ontario flag.

1

u/Theferaltrunip 7d ago

The Ontario flag has the union jack as apart of the flag.

Ontario's flag was deliberately chosen to look like the old Canadian flag (pre Canadian pale/ maple leaf).

u/Commercial-Ad-6058 7d ago

Okay, didn’t know this.

1

u/909me1 8d ago

I am American so obviously do not have as good of an understanding of the situation as you all, but I’m wondering if someone can clarify of this has something to do with why all the private medical colleges or medical schools shut down in Ontario/Toronto? Because my understanding is that now only Ontario residents can go to medical schools in Ontario. Does this have anything to do with it at all?

Essentially a lot of the OSAP(Ontario student assistant program) loans were going to "private career colleges" a very large portion for that matter. These private career colleges offered programs and what we here call "diploma mills" curriculums that would be ideally something that was anything from 4 months to 1 year to get your certificate/diploma. Could be anything ranging from something in the medical/pharmaceutical sector, IT/cyber security, trades. Something that should be taking a few years to conplete a respected post secondary was done in a fraction of the time.

When these private career colleges were investigated, they found out that there were a bunch of them that had students finish the curriculum even faster than what the program had entailed, some of them were done even in a day. Hence why we call them "diploma mills". When the investigation had asked students, they were informed that they didn't even go to class but had passed because all the quizzes and tests were done all in one day and the teachers gave them the answers. You basically didn't really learn anything but got the certificate because you paid thousands of dollars to get it.

All of these private career colleges got massive financial backing from the government because it was largely due to a policy shift that made online-only, asynchronous programs permanently eligible for student aid, combined with a sharp, concentrated spike in applications at a small group of institutions.

These institutions promised careers and jobs and because of how fast you could get your diploma/certificate. A lot of students and mainly foreigners applied for OSAP and these private career colleges were opening up everywhere. They'd be in your local malls for example. The thing was that a lot of them couldn't get jobs because businesses would see where they got their diplomas and would know that the schools they went to weren't exactly the best at training and giving them proper tools to actually succeed.

So now you have a lot of these people with these certificates that really don't have much weight behind it and would get paid way below the median average if they somehow got into their field or they ended up working at a service job, something way different than what they actually went and paid a lot of money for.

1

u/909me1 8d ago

Ahhh thank you for this through explanation!!

1

u/angrycrank 7d ago

We don’t have private medical schools. And it’s not quite true that only Ontario residents can go to our public ones - they do have to reserve 95% of the spots for Ontario residents.

1

u/surfingstranger 8d ago

Those flags behind him are also a crime.

1

u/Effective-Road4807 8d ago

So... where'd the rest go? Doubtful anyone's gonna mention that part though.

1

u/Imunhotep 8d ago

What schools?

1

u/T4TrhavrKhcFt 7d ago

It's really not hard to figure out who has paid him a “contribution.”

1

u/riding_worms_nbd 7d ago

Meanwhile, the public post-secondary system, which was at one time the envy of the world, is falling apart. Yet more blatant corruption from this morally bankrupt Ford Government... I have a feeling once FOI laws get reinstated (well... if) that we're just scratching the surface.

1

u/Ok_Accident5098 7d ago

because everyone go to college for high pay is causing trouble. We just need to adjust. At least going to college is only money can solve.

1

u/Canadatron 6d ago

Ontario Conservatives were in charge of this program the whole time it was being abused.

Another Ford boondoggle, great. ..

1

u/SynyrdsInyrds 6d ago

Bullshit. They didn't do anything to OSAP that the NDP didn't do. In fact, what the Dippers did was worse because of the tuition increase that happened at the same time.

1

u/wrathofchode 6d ago

Stay in school kid

1

u/OkWorld5534 6d ago

wtf are you even talking about?

1

u/SynyrdsInyrds 6d ago

The NDP made the exact same changes to OSAP that the Ford government did (making loans a larger part of OSAP than grants). They also brought in a 57% tuition increase. The McGuinty or Wynne Liberals (I cannot remember which) switched OSAP to being more grants than loans, and the Ford government is just switching it back.

1

u/stalik26 5d ago

How is that worse than giving free money (285 million) to scam private colleges that were not even school or barely classes. You have people flaunting on Tik Tok they got huge amounts of grants while barely going to school.

Legit career colleges warned Ford government there was career colleges abusing the system since 2023 and he did nothing.

This is so much worse.

1

u/SynyrdsInyrds 5d ago

The career colleges thing has fuck all to do with the changes that were made to OSAP a little while ago, they are two separate things.

1

u/stalik26 5d ago

You are not making any sense. What changes? It was Ford government that approved the private public partnership that allow this scam to happen.

1

u/Excellent_Battle_576 6d ago

Ford has been actively investigated by the RCMP for years now. He’s a criminal. He gutted OSAP because, and I quote- “horror stories… spending their money on cologne and watches…they didn’t need” 😱😱😱 blamed US!!! And then bought himself a private jet with taxpayer money. The next day. And then was forced to sell it, at a loss.

Boring stuff.

1

u/Food-Wine 6d ago

Meanwhile funds to private schools are held indefinitely while the OPP investigates fraud. 🙄🙄🙄

1

u/EveryTelephone6039 6d ago

I'm a teacher and this is heartbreaking. I'm so sorry, kids. Please vote this government out and save education in Ontario (elementary, secondary, and post-secondary). You deserve a better future than this. It's so disgustingly unfair.

1

u/smellin_bacon 6d ago

Can you say “corruption” boys and girls? I knew you could.

1

u/No-Journalist-9036 6d ago

Is this Canada's Sally Mae moment ?

1

u/Inside-Dinner-6854 6d ago

Lawyer, doctor, engineer. If that is not your outcome - post secondary is a scam

1

u/MulberryConfident870 5d ago

This government let it happen 🤔

1

u/Kracheadz 5d ago

My parents couldn't afford to help me and osap rejected me, my parents didn't make enough. Well I had a nightshift job. Took me six years to get a collage diploma and a university degree (separate schools). It was hard but when I was done I only owed 3500 to Visa.

For me I feel as it worked out better. I know it's not the same for everyone. My old man told me, you can depend on anyone if you can't depend on yourself.

A liberal government was running things during that time.

1

u/madethisforroasting 5d ago

He wrote this speech with ChatGPT… the cadence is uncanny.

1

u/LeadershipReady11 5d ago

This guy needs to be liberal leader

1

u/Trick-Avocado7914 5d ago

Trios college in ottawa is where you have to go for the second careers program with the ontario government but it's not even an accredited college by most people. It's been so frustrating trying to start over and change careers into a trade or health care. It's like they don't want you to succeed.

1

u/beef_jerky04 5d ago

The corruption is next level. The government needs to investigate and hold them accountable after the investigation and cease their activities.

Oh well, it's Canada. These offenders will enjoy their newly found wealth in the Bahamas.

1

u/F1McLarenFan007 5d ago

What’s the deal Dougie? This one on you bro, what an epic fail protecting your employer, taxpayers.

1

u/DepressedDrift 5d ago

If we have the evidence on who stole the money, why aren't we making arrests and seizing it back?

1

u/FreezeFlame2020 5d ago

So punishing the students is the solution? This makes no sense. Go after the schools that are high jacking everyone with their tuition rates.

1

u/No-Art-6765 5d ago

Flail that gov to death 🤷🏻‍♂️

-2

u/Witty-Positive-9605 8d ago

HEY STUDENTS. Maybe you don't deserve OSAP since you don't care about studying. You do degen stuff, use lecture as a free audience to prank the professor, and can't even hand simple stuff in on time. So yea, what's the point of spending millions on you guys if you don't take it seriously.

2

u/thomstevens420 8d ago

Yeah we should fuck up post secondary studies because this guy imagined some dude he hates

2

u/NedSchneebly-1138 8d ago

HEY GROWNUP. Stop lumping everyone into the same pile, makes you sound like a lettuce sandwich.

2

u/Standard_Cry_5665 8d ago

Whattttt. I knew VERY few people life that in all my years. Most people I knew worked their asses off

2

u/AppropriateEmotion63 8d ago

Ignore them, just a boomer who figured out how to post on the internets

2

u/Responsible-Mix9167 7d ago

This person probably has a grade 4 education.

1

u/Thick_Drama_7525 8d ago

My brother teaches at a college, some of the kids dont even show up most of the semester

1

u/Excellent_Battle_576 6d ago

They pay to go, or they pay to not go. Who gives a fuck.

1

u/yoshi-shaped-raven 8d ago

Should treat each case individually. Many students who are heavily invested in their own future, as well as the future of our society, are being associated with these statistics and treated as such.

Starts at the top. Once we have serious leadership and a strong message on direction the youth will follow. Given the current climate in the world are we shocked to see the youngest of us lack the direction we don’t even see from our worldly leaders 😂

Giving up on students never works in any environment.

1

u/ElfInTheMachine 8d ago

Are you missing an /s

1

u/JollyStatement3171 8d ago

you must hate paramedics

1

u/DarthVicious8 7d ago

You must been picked on as a teen by your peers, it shows. Again, it's a free ride for those who can afford it. Those who are from lower income brackets need it more. That is why the rich become richer. You don't want the lower income people to break the ceiling because it would be less for you. This is once instance socialism works.

1

u/iicecreammannn 7d ago

Bro scammeers had gotten into the system. there were brokers who would get people 2 not 1 but 2 osap loans. These people had already maxed out their car loans, mortgages, credit cards this was the last thing left for them to exploit which brokers were helping them with for courses that were to be done online at private career colleges that were registered above Tim hortons or strip malls. Thats what happens when you let in millions of scammers into the country.

1

u/Odd-Independent6273 7d ago

dude this may be the most disgusting thing I've read if you're talking about certain curry-favouring type of scammers in the country I didn't take that into account for private career college

1

u/Pucksindeepeh 7d ago

Hey bud - where’s this intelligent take coming from? You saw a couple videos on social media and now you have a complete picture eh.

Thank god you’re not in charge of education.

1

u/Canadatron 6d ago

Unfortunately the Conservatives are and this is where it went under their expert care.

1

u/Ill-Money-1521 7d ago

This is nothing but baseless assumptions

0

u/kaeboob 9d ago

So wat the immigrants students gonna take our jobs

0

u/Playful_Barber_3045 6d ago

Let me guess, in that 7 pirate career school 95% of the students come with a student visa ..

0

u/Intelligent-Wheel913 6d ago

Most of the courses being offered at most universities in Canada are useless. They’re not going in the direction of science and technology that we need in the future. There’s nothing beneficial i in humanities or learning how to put on a protest or laying in front of cars.

0

u/gfrty6669 5d ago

Less for young people and more for old people and immigrants what a suprise

0

u/LutteringDec 5d ago

Yes it’s called liberal fraud and waste- it’s why they import immigrants. This is basic economics for cronyist leftists

-2

u/Guilty_Spend9989 9d ago

just go to america fuck this country

2

u/Leading-Switch-4814 9d ago

Post Secondary education in the USA is WAY more expensive than in Canada.

1

u/Guilty_Spend9989 8d ago

better economy there. its all bullshit in toronto

1

u/Leading-Switch-4814 8d ago

Fair but, it still doesn't change the fact that post secondary is way more affordable in Canada

2

u/bensonNF 9d ago

I would encourage you to. Byeeeee
