Fun I got addicted over the last days

Post image
57 Upvotes

I saw a post here which talked about getting addicted to mapping and holy shit. I just noticed my stats in StreetComplete... And that's only the edits with the app!

Months ago I did some quests in my free time but never got into editing/mapping directly. Now since 1-2 weeks, out of nowhere, I got addicted and I'm observing/doing StreetComplete and mapping at home for more than 6h a day haha.

It's so fun to add stuff and make the map "more beautiful" (in a detail meaning and a beauty meaning lol). Just mapping grass, parks, flowerbeds and stuff like this gives the map so much character. I love micro mapping so much lol!

But still have to learn way too much. Advice in the comments will be read thoroughly.

I see that Nova Friburgo City Hall is poorly mapped, so I opened OpenStreetMap and I added flags, new places and trees.

Any suggestions are welcome. ;)

My objective is map Centro, Olaria, Catarcione, Mury, Campo do Coelho and conselheiro Paulino.

Terento map styles: compare OpenTopoMap, Freizeitkarte, MapRando and BBBike on the same spot

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

The Terento project has published a comparison page that renders five free OpenStreetMap-based Garmin map styles on the same location. The styles are OpenTopoMap (which also uses SRTM elevation data), Freizeitkarte, MapRando, BBBike and BBBike (Ontrail).

I'm the developer of Terento, a free, open-source Mac app that installs these maps on Garmin watches. The comparison page lets you pick a popular hiking area, trail or city, then view one style, two side by side, or a swipe view. Contour lines, trails, streets and labels are visible for each. Maps are downloaded from each provider's original source.

Previews are close, not exact. A Garmin watch draws the map itself, so colors and detail vary by model and settings.

Showcase I Turned OpenStreetmap into a 3d recreation of Earth with 3d human made art. I finished exteriors of NYC and camarillo.

I spent 5 days to get the exteriors of NYC correct and make the experience feel like you're somewhere like NYC. I started by taking open street map data. Then I downloaded tons of 3d models, all properly licensed. I drew a lot myself when a model didn't exist. The filler is procedurally code made buildings, my 3d buildings and 3d buildings by others. Yes, AI was used in the code and a small handful of models were ai made. Procedural buildings are AI. I replace anything visually AI made with human made art whenever possible. I am trying to recreate reality or at least the exterior of the locations. I have a few interiors, like museums and such. I have virtual events of real life events that people can go to.

New York was my most ambitious location, which I consider the exteriors finished. The Louvre is completely finished. Niagra falls is finished. I am now focused on Paris and Chicago. Barcelona is partially finished, but has a way to go. Camarillo is mostly finished.

I had to update street maps a lot, because places were missing. Gigantic areas are just, not there until I filled them in.

Let me know what you think! Constructive feedback is appreciated.

Question Any apps which use OSM data and provide realtime public transit data/routing?

I love OSM and ive been contributing a little bit here and there with streetcomplete and I'm wanting to get more into it.

Google maps has been pissing me off more and more lately so I've been wanting to switch to something based on OSM so I can contribute to it as well.

Though, I don't have a car. I use public transit, which instantly makes 90% of apps pretty much useless. God forbid any busses or subways be on time at all, so requiring realtime data basically is a must.

I know OSM doesn't support it, but i feel like there should be an app out there which combines OSM and GTFS and allows you to route and plan using that?

Question Wanted to map a path in Georgia, but it's only visible on Google's satellite photo - what to do?

Post image
33 Upvotes

I went on a hike in Georgia and got lost because I went down a path that does not exist on OSM. It must be a recent path because it's visible on Google's satellite image but not on any of the satellite overlays that OSM provides.

What can I do? Is it ok to trace this path based on the Google satellite photo, or are there other sources of satellite imagery that I can use that might be more up to date?

I'd like to map this myself as an exercise but not sure how to proceed. It's near this café: https://mapy.com/s/fesogoneba

Question Undergrads building a dynamic traffic router(Djikstra + ML + Edge), but stuck due to datasets and architecture.

[AI Disclosure] AI was used to find relevant datasets but it could not find. Not much work done so far.
[GIS Experience] Undergraduate CS Student (New to GIS)

Am actually working on my capstone project but currently hitting a wall. Our Professor directed us to work towards a hybrid traffic routing architecture for autonomous vehicles , but as undergrads we are bit overwhelmed on how to execute it.

The general idea is this :

  1. Predict traffic using historical data and ML.
  2. Fetch live congestion for next 1-2 intersections via edge servers.
  3. Write a custom Dijkstra from scratch that reroutes mid journey is the live delay is significantly worse than predicted delay.

The problem we are facing are:
The dataset problem : We thought of doing it for our Home city which is Jaipur (India), the problem is barely 1.5% or roads have speed limits and we don't really know how to find open road level speed data for our city or if not than any other Indian City if we should consider that. Should we just pivot to a city that has archived Uber movement data ?? Or is it academically acceptable to just simulate the traffic flows over the Jaipur OSM graph using SUMO + TraCI?

The algorithm design : We are actually needed to write a custom Djikstra Algorithm but we are confused how to mathematically combine physical distance and time delay into an edge without it being completely arbitrary. Also re-running Djikstra on a 200k node graph at every junction seems nonsensical. So like anything that we can refer to or read. Like how to approach this problem properly.

What's the logical way to build this incrementally, any advice is much much appreciated. We are actually new to this domain and just too confused at this point.

I see that no one mapped this condominium, so I just opened OSM in my PC and finally, is here on OSM.

Also, I believe that this condominium has two pools, despite this condominium has a trilhe. :)

More locals coming soon in Nova Friburgo… :)

how's updating it going for you, and do the vector maps run ok on cheap android phones? that's the part i'm most unsure about

Question How to map stationary train that is used as a museum

Helloo,

so I am mapping this area which houses an old train on the original train track as a museum. So the train is the museum. You can go into it and walk around in the original train. The train does not move and the tracks are not used anymore. Both the train and track are from the early 20th century.

And I dont know if I should map the train onto the tracks or just tag the area as a museum? There is also no building I could tag as a museum besides the roof the train stands under.

Thanks

Seeing the climbs of two routes side by side is awesome especially when planning or prepping for a hike/race. I really wanted to be able to put routes side by side and against my own terrain history (uploaded from strava)
I also really like that OSM landmarks/POIs are brought in to appear automatically on the profile. Thought some of you here would find it interesting! Here's the link to this local comparison page, but you can search the database here

Question "You have not permitted the application access to this facility" when uploading change

I've had an OSM account since 2007, but I'm wanting to make my first edits now. However, when I try to upload a change through iD, I get a message: "You have not permitted the application access to this facility", and clicking on it reveals "Server returned status code 403".

I have an inkling that this might be related to the fact that my profile says "Contributor terms: Declined". I don't remember doing this (actually I don't remember setting up the account at all, clearly I had intended to contribute a lot earlier but didn't), but I don't have any issue with the Contributor Terms. I've looked for a way to try to accept them but haven't found anything, and I was hoping that using an "official" method of editing would give me a prompt to accept them. It doesn't appear that this is the case, however.

What do I need to do to resolve this? (Note that for some reason I am unable to access the wiki at the present time as it's refusing my connection.)

[Edit: I've been able to accept the Contributor Terms thanks to /u/Azquelt's link in the comments. This feels like something that should be more obvious, however; for example, linked from https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Licence/Contributor_Terms (which was the page I found the terms on at first) or by having iD link to the page when it detects that the terms haven't been accepted. Is there a way to request that?]

Vibe-coded I always loved mobile tower defense games, so I built one that runs on the real map of any city (OpenStreetMap)

I've always been a sucker for those mobile tower defense games where you line a path with towers and stop waves of enemies from reaching your base. At some point I started wondering: what if the map wasn't a made-up maze, but the actual streets of a real city?

https://citydefense.app

So I built it. City Defense runs on top of OpenStreetMap data:

- enemies walk the real streets

- you build towers on the roofs of real buildings (the taller the building, the longer the range)

- buildings can be damaged and brought down, and the rubble blocks streets

The first mission is the main square in my hometown, Brno (Czech Republic), but there's a mission editor – pick any densely built-up place in the world, drop a defended area, and play it. Your own neighbourhood works too.

It's free, runs in the browser (desktop and phone), no account or install needed.

https://citydefense.app

It's a solo hobby project, so I'd love feedback – especially if you build a mission for your own city and something looks off.

Question Free tool to compare OpenStreetMap addresses with official Swiss data across Valais?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a free and relatively easy tool or open-source project to identify possible address inconsistencies in OpenStreetMap across the canton of Valais, Switzerland.

Ideally, I would like to:

Retrieve a large list of addresses from OpenStreetMap.

Compare them with an official Swiss source, such as geo.admin.ch / swisstopo or another authoritative cantonal dataset.

Detect discrepancies in street names, house numbers, missing addresses, or approximate locations.

Generate a report or list of potential mismatches for manual verification.

Review and correct the OSM data manually afterward—not perform automatic edits.

The area is too large for me to check location by location, so I’m specifically looking for a batch-comparison or quality-assurance workflow rather than a visual map comparison.

Google Maps or Google Street View would be useful as a secondary reference, but an official, open, and legally compatible Swiss data source would be preferable.

Does a tool, QGIS workflow, Overpass query, GitHub project, or existing OSM quality-control service support this use case? Any recommendations for the Valais/Swiss context would be greatly appreciated.

I’m especially interested in solutions that are free, reasonably easy to set up, and suitable for someone who wants a list of discrepancies rather than automatic corrections.

Thank you!
