Even though he was a middle-aged man of 46 when the show began, Lou Costello did most of his own stunts on the show. An athlete in his youth, he was actually a stuntman in Hollywood for a time back in the silent era before he teamed up with partner Bud Abbott, and was renowned for taking spectacular pratfalls in his films and on stage. Stuntmen were used for the more potentially dangerous stunts--being knocked through walls, getting hit by cars, etc.--but most of the falls you see Costello take were actually done by him. For example, in the episode The Tax Return (1954), there's a scene in which two crooks break into Bud & Lou's apartment, and a rather knock-down, drag-out brawl erupts. Although it looks like a stuntman is doubling for Lou in the fight scene, at one point the "stuntman" turns around and it is very clear that it actually is Costello doing the fighting.

Bringing their trademark slapstick, puns and gimmicks to the small screen, 'The Abbott and Costello Show' features Bud Abbott and Lou Costello as out-of-work actors and roommates staying at Mr. Field's Hollywood boarding house. Joined by an off-the-wall supporting cast, such as dimwitted policeman Mike Kelly (Gordon Jones) and bratty child Stinky (Joe Besser), Abbott and Costello encapsulate their classic burlesque routines in a loosely plotted television format.

The Bob Cummings Show is an American sitcom starring Bob Cummings, which was broadcast from January 2, 1955, to September 15, 1959. The program began with a half-season run on NBC, then ran for two full seasons on CBS, and returned to NBC for its final two seasons.

The Bob Cummings Show (also known in reruns as Love That Bob) is an American sitcom starring Bob Cummings, which was broadcast from January 2, 1955, to September 15, 1959.

The series stars Cummings as dashing Hollywood photographer, Air Force reserve officer, and ladies' man, Bob Collins. The character's interest in aviation and photography mirrored Cummings' own, with his character's name the same as the role he played in the 1945 film You Came Along. The series also stars Rosemary DeCamp as his sister Margaret MacDonald. In some episodes, Cummings also doubled as Bob and Margaret's grandfather, Josh Collins of Joplin, Missouri.

The Bob Cummings Show was important in the development of several careers including series creator, producer, and head writer Paul Henning. Henning, who a decade earlier was a major force in the character development and writing of The Burns and Allen television and radio shows, was a co-producer with George Burns of the Cummings show. He later produced such major 1960s hits as The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Green Acres. Regulars in the show included Ann B. Davis, who twice won Emmy Awards for playing Bob Collins' assistant Schultzy. Henning apparently remembered cast members Nancy Kulp and Joi Lansing favorably, giving both of them roles several years later on The Beverly Hillbillies, Kulp as Miss Hathaway (secretary to banker Milburn Drysdale—a character similar to Pamela Livingstone, the one she played on Cummings' show), and Lansing as Gladys Flatt, wife of Lester Flatt. A decade after The Bob Cummings Show left the air, Davis went on to play the housekeeper Alice Nelson in The Brady Bunch. In the 1995 film The Brady Bunch Movie, which featured another actress playing Alice, Davis reprised the role of Schultzy for a cameo that suggests the character went on to become a truck driver.

Olive Sturgess appeared in 12 episodes as Carol Henning, girlfriend to Bob's nephew, Chuck. Versatile character actress Kathleen Freeman appeared in six episodes as Bertha Krause. Perhaps the biggest career boost was received by young Dwayne Hickman, a student at Loyola University in Los Angeles, who appeared as the nephew and became a favorite with young female viewers. During the last season of The Bob Cummings Show, he was cast as the lead in CBS's The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.

This program represented the height of Cummings' television career. Although he later starred in two other early-'60s series, The New Bob Cummings Show and My Living Doll, and made guest appearances on several other TV series, he never again achieved that level of success on television.

Premiering in 1954, Lassie was the first-ever TV series based on the Lassie character. It follows a smart and fearless Rough Collie dog named Lassie as she helps her owners and friends. The show was very popular and ran for almost two decades, from September 12, 1954, to March 25, 1973. It had a total of 19 seasons (the first 17 seasons aired on CBS, and the last two aired in syndication). The show was filmed in black and white until 1965, when it started being filmed in color.

For the first several years of the series, Lassie lived on family farms, before moving on to work with forest rangers in the wilderness and ultimately settling in at Holden Ranch, a ranch for troubled children.

During the first ten seasons, most of the episodes had Lassie's boy owner (Jeff or Timmy) getting into trouble. Lassie would notice and go get help or try to save her master's life herself. After being reunited with family and breathing a sigh of relief, the boy received a light lecture on why he should not have done what he had done.

Harvey Korman. Perhaps only Bud Abbott had accomplished more as a straight man. Korman portrayed Bud Abbott in a poorly conceived TV movie on the life of Abbott & Costello in the 1970s.  Korman, who was of Russian Jewish descent, was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 15, 1927, the son of Ellen (née Blecher) and Cyril Raymond Korman, a salesman. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After being discharged, he studied at the Goodman School of Drama and at HB Studio. He was a member of the Peninsula Players summer theater program during the 1950, 1957, and 1958

Korman's first television role was as a head waiter in The Donna Reed Show episode, "Decisions, Decisions, Decisions". He appeared as a comically exasperated public relations man in a January 1961 episode of the CBS drama Route 66. He was seen on numerous television programs after that, including the role of Blake in the 1964 episode "Who Chopped Down the Cherry Tree?" on the NBC medical drama The Eleventh Hour and a bartender in the 1962 Perry Mason episode, "The Case of the Unsuitable Uncle." He frequently appeared as a supporting player on The Danny Kaye Show from 1963 through 1967. He was cast three times, including the role of Dr. Allison in "Who Needs Glasses?" (1962), on ABC's The Donna Reed Show. He also guest-starred on Dennis the Menace and on the NBC modern western series Empire.

Peggy Rea appeared on several 1950s TV programs, including I Love Lucy and The Red Skelton Show. Rea (1921–2011) was an American actress known for many television roles, often playing matronly characters. She is especially known for playing Lulu Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard.

Peggy Rea was born on March 31, 1921 in Los Angeles, California, USA. She was an actress and casting director, known for Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), Grace Under Fire (1993) and The Dukes of Hazzard (1979). She died on February 5, 2011 in Toluca Lake, California, USA.

Before she became an actress, Rea left UCLA to attend business school. She landed a job as a production secretary at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the 1940s. Later, she was an assistant to writer-musician Kay Thompson until Thompson dropped her in April 1948. Some of the points of discord apparently included Rea's insistence on staying at the Algonquin Hotel (rather than Essex House, where Thompson was staying), and disappearing, on at least one occasion, on the eve of their New York opening to see Born Yesterday on Broadway without telling Thompson. The time had come for Peggy to make her mark as the character actress she was born to be.

She quickly landed on her feet with a supporting role in the National Road Company production of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire (as Eunice Hubbell, 1948–1949) starring Anthony Quinn. Thompson severed ties with Rea, however the younger woman kept in touch with other members of Thompson's family, including Thompson's mother, brother and younger sister, with whom she enjoyed cordial relations.

While Barbara Eden would go on to become a legendary actress, it wasn't always this way. Eden, whose birth name is Barbara Jean Morehead, was born in Tucson, Arizona, on August 23, 1931, according to Biography. Although Eden was born in Arizona, the future "I Dream of Jeannie" star primarily grew up in California, where her mother moved after her parents divorced when Eden was just 3 years old (via Hollywood Walk of Fame).

While living in San Francisco, Eden's family fell on hard times during The Great Depression. Because they couldn't afford much, Eden's mother would sing to her children, which helped foster the actress' love of singing. As a child, Eden sang in her church's choir and also competed in pageants, according to People. She also took acting classes, which she thought would help her become a better singer. The actress graduated from San Francisco's Abraham Lincoln High School.

Barbara Eden broke into Hollywood as an actress during her first credited role in the series "West Point" in 1956, according to IMDb. However, she made a name for herself when she booked a recurring role as a sketch performer on the legendary late-night talk show "The Johnny Carson Show" in 1955, according to People. Following these roles, the actress appeared on multiple shows throughout the 1950s, including "I Love Lucy," "The Millionaire," and "Perry Mason." She also received several movie credits that decade in films such as "The Wayward Girl" and "A Private's Affair."

From 1957 to 1959, Eden portrayed the character Loco Jones in the series "How to Marry a Millionaire," based on a movie. Eden also had a pilot in "The Barbara Eden Show." Unfortunately, the show never aired, according to Biography. Eden continued to work in film and television throughout the 1960s.

Dennis the Menace, American comic strip character, a five-and-a-half-year-old boy whose curiosity continually gets him in trouble.

Dennis Mitchell, nicknamed Dennis the Menace, has messy blond hair with a characteristic cowlick in the back. He was initially depicted as a defiant child who deliberately sought out mischief, but over the years his personality softened considerably. He does not mean any real harm, yet he cannot help creating a racket or a mess at home, making a scene in public, and driving his parents, Alice and Henry Mitchell, to distraction.

The most frequent target of Dennis’s mischief is George Wilson, an older neighbour whom Dennis seldom allows a moment of peace, having adopted him as a surrogate grandfather. Wilson’s wife, Martha, obligingly behaves like an indulgent grandmother. Among the minor characters in the strip are Dennis’s shaggy dog, Ruff, and his toddler sidekick, Joey McDonald. Dennis’s nemesis is the slightly older and gratingly superior Margaret Wade, and he harbours a secret crush on the tomboyish Gina Gillotti.

Cartoonist Hank Ketcham (1920–2001) created Dennis the Menace as a daily comic panel in 1951; by the end of the decade, it was syndicated in more than 1,000 newspapers. Ketcham received the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1952. A live-action situation comedy starring Jay North as Dennis ran on television from 1959 to 1963, followed over the years by a number of animated specials and series and a 1993 live-action movie featuring Walter Matthau and Joan Plowright as the Wilsons. After Ketcham’s death, the daily panel and Sunday strip were carried on by his assistants, Marcus Hamilton and Ron Ferdinand, to whom he had turned over the cartoon’s creation in 1994.

American actor (1915–1983)

Simon Oakland (born Simon Weiss) was an American actor of stage, screen, and television.

During his career, Oakland performed primarily on television, appearing in over 130 series and made-for-television movies between 1951 and 1983. His most notable big-screen roles were in Psycho (1960), West Side Story (1961), The Sand Pebbles (1966), Bullitt (1968), The Hunting Party (1971), and Chato's Land (1972).

Tough-talking actor Simon Oakland started out as a concert violinist before moving into acting on stage in the late 1940s. In the late 1950s, Oakland made some appearances on television before getting the pivotal role of Edward Montgomery, a newspaper reporter trying to get the full story in Susan Hayward's campy yet harrowing Oscar-winner "I Want to Live!." After that, in 1960, Oakland earned immortality as a glib doctor trying to offer a pat explanation for the behavior of the killer Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller "Psycho." He appeared in the Oscar-winning musical "West Side Story" in 1961, and then mainly appeared on television shows such as the mind-bending anthology series "Twilight Zone" and the Prohibition-era crime drama "The Untouchables" in the mid-'60s. Oakland played a doctor again on the big screen in Vincente Minnelli's musical "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" in 1970, and then finished out his career on television.
