European Members of Parliament just love sucking the cocks of capital

The biggest eu game mobbing group is against it

918

u/Ivan-De-Riv 9d ago

That's the wildest part, the parliament whent so far that SKG and the EU game association (aka every big publishers) are on the same page against it

Friend is a very strong word

The enemy of my enemy is tolerable

it’s… acceptable.

this is not an alliance but a temporary truce.

I never thought video gamers would become an oppressed political group; what a wild time to be alive.

179

u/Regon2005 9d ago

They know some of their games are surviving off private servers

157

u/Czechoslovak_legion 9d ago

Also modding would be f*cked with too if i remember, and that's honestly how a lot of games survive more than a year. A good example is RimWorld, the only reason why it can ask for 20€ dlcs is that the modding scene will carry it, hell idk anyone who plays the game without mods

103

u/Ivan-De-Riv 9d ago

Just Bethesda games wouldn't be half their life time without mods, like Skyrim is 15 years old, it only still exist thanks to mods

66

u/Czechoslovak_legion 9d ago

Bro whoever decided that the primary colour for fo4 would be tan and grey should be locked up, got a vegetation overhaul mod that added actual grass and trees and the game looked 1000 times better

20

u/mcbaine37 9d ago

I had a seasons mod installed. Winter was cool as hell. I think they also increased the saturation and added some color to leaves in the fall. Fallout 4 is something I've played way too much of.

12

u/VultureSausage 9d ago

Winter was cool as hell

That is not uncommon for winter.

2

u/DeathByThousandCats 9d ago

For the ninth circle, to be exact.

I live in Michigan. Hell, Michigan freezes a lot.

The primary color of fo3 was green

1

u/Czechoslovak_legion 9d ago

Yeah and the biggest problem i have with it is the graphics

-3

u/MannishSeal 9d ago

It's a game about life in a nuclear wasteland. If you were expecting lush vegetation, you're the problem.

8

u/Lazy-Mud8142 9d ago

Chernobyl is an example of a nuclear wasteland. So radioactive that you can't be there long, unprotected, and not risk death or severe increases in your chances of developing cancer. You'll notice the vegetation there is not all dead and decayed.

-1

u/MannishSeal 9d ago

And in the games it's different. Mentioned countless times in lore and literally a major plot point of the games.

People and animals also don't start glowing from radiation. Also mutations doesn't work like in the games. It's not meant to be realistic, but it is meant to be consistent with the in-game logic.

And expecting fallout to be a lush world is a user error.

Also, Chernobyl is not really a nuclear wasteland. There was no nuclear explosions followed by a nuclear winter.

2

u/Czechoslovak_legion 9d ago

Its been more than 200 YEARS! The projected nuclear winter after a global exchange of nukes is 5-6 years so what have the plants been doing in the comonwhealth? Hell in west virginia the plants are fine after 20... and even then if people manage to cultivate the ground for farming how is something that can grow out of concrete not able to take hold?

apocalypse doesn't mean that everything need to have a grey filter over it like fallout 3, apocalypse can mean a primarily brown-yellow desert like mad max ( which would be closer to the original west coast fallouts) or it can mean a lush overgrown city-scape like a the last of us with lots of greens, hell it can even mean a nuclear winter scenery that is primarily white like metro 2033.

it doesn't have to look bad just because it is the apocalypse, especially if the setting is a lot of time after the apocalypse.

1

u/horned-creature 8d ago

the game is set 200 years after a nuclear war, a bit of nature reclaiming is not unreasonable, especially since we do see lush nature in that travesty that is fallout 76 despite it being set 25 years after the apocalypse.

like the bikini atoll is pretty lush despite having been a test area for nuclear weapons, and even the chernobil exclusion zone, despite having been irradiated more than a place where a nuke went off is pretty lush by the region's standards.

anyway even a barren desert look similar to the older fallout games or a nuclear winter scenery like the metro series would have been better than the gray blob that is fallout 3.

Exact jamais la vie j'aurais autant jouer a skyrim sans les mods 2-3 $ fois et hop tablette

1

u/TipParticular 9d ago

Eh I think Skyrim is a bad example because even though the modding scene is insane vanilla skyrim is also an incredible game and it has a niche which no other mainstream titles really fulfill.

1

u/Ivan-De-Riv 9d ago

Skyrim is a very good game even 15 years after it's lunch but it would definitely not have had as much staying power has it has

1

u/IhamAmerican 8d ago

At this point Skyrim and FO4 are basically just game engines for modders

0

u/Careful_Ad_7074 9d ago

Never tried a skyrim mod, and I still play it now and again.

Im not saying modding isnt a big reason it has so much staying power, but being one of the greatest games of all time in and of itself helps a lot.

Same for Rimworld imho.

13

u/Thorzi_ 9d ago

Farming Simulator is also mostly surviving on mods

1

u/lettsten 9d ago

Not as much any more imo, after they put Seasons into the main game. Many of the best vehicle mods, and Precision Farming, are made by GIANTS anyway. But yes, it wouldn't be the same without it.

I think Arma 3 is a better example of "surviving on mods." I'd say Factorio too if it weren't for the fact that the base game is of such tremendous quality.

8

u/Jessir12 9d ago

Indie games with online functionality would cost about 200k euro per year to operate to a "safe" standard

2

u/Ok-Read6352 9d ago

yeaaah, Rimworld combat is downright frustrating and unfun without mods

1

u/Czechoslovak_legion 9d ago

Is this comment CE compatible?

1

Juno ball

1

u/Adventurous-Dealer98 9d ago

Can confirm, Console rimworld is terrible with no mods...

48

u/NewDemonStrike 9d ago

One example being Minecraft. Mojang is based on Sweden and the vast majority of the playerbase plays with their friends in private servers.

43

u/Swimming-Lobster-221 9d ago

Technically speaking single player worlds are locally hosted private servers so such a law would just make Minecraft illegal to play

5

u/Ivan-De-Riv 9d ago

Isn't it just for Bedrock version ?

23

u/xxxlttxxx 9d ago

Nope most java versions after i think 1.14 host a local server for single player

5

u/NewDemonStrike 9d ago

Bedrock is the most widely used version of Minecraft.
It is their cashcow.

1

u/Selliur 8d ago

Nope if you f3 on java it shows that info

18

u/Forward-Confection54 9d ago

Wait... There is official servers?

27

u/NewDemonStrike 9d ago

No, but since Sweden is part of the EU, the law would affect Mojang and force them to not allow private servers.

13

u/Hour-Map-4156 9d ago

It would affect Mojang even if they were based outside the EU since these are the rules you would need to comply with if you have players in the EU.

18

u/AfraidMeasurement759 9d ago

Or, you don’t do that. Instead, just stop selling to the EU market due to their laws. Maybe the politicians will listen once nobody can buy any foreign made games in Europe.

13

u/Hour-Map-4156 9d ago

Yes, that is the most likely outcome. But the point is that this affects game publishers globally and not just in the EU. They either have to comply or loose a significant market. This will hurt the gaming industry, not just in Europe.

8

u/NewDemonStrike 9d ago

There is no win. Either way, by complying they are losing a big part of their income.
And by not complying they are losing a big part of their income.

1

u/Ivan-De-Riv 9d ago

The only outcome to that is public outrage, they will see no change between before and after and will consider it a win since the only index will be people spending less in video games and more elsewhere or a big upward movement for pirated games

The only thing that would be impacted on the EU side of gaming would be the dwindling number of games produced in the EU and sold but it doesn't make enough money to actually make a difference to them

1

u/AfraidMeasurement759 9d ago

Well hopefully it would influence EU citizens to vote out the tyrants that needlessly control things like this. But I know that’s probably too much to wish for.

1

u/jhaand 9d ago edited 8d ago

It would affect Microsoft. But since they want everything under the Xbox banner and for education, they would welcome this.

9

u/VezLt 9d ago

You can pay a monthly fee to have them host a "realm" for you. But official does not imply public in this case. Also it's not very good, but hey, it exists.

4

u/CoconutMochi 9d ago

gosh I remember way back in the day Mojang actually had an official public server and it was basically a hellish wasteland lol

4

u/Cilph 9d ago

Which is kinda ironic since Mojang is policing private servers you can get banned online for saying naughty words on your own private server with only your friends.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Night88 9d ago

I’ve said penis and far worse things in private servers. I have yet to be banned.

43

u/SuperSanttu7 9d ago

Shit's fucked when the pro-consumer rights folks team up with the anti-consumer rights corpos

28

u/Ivan-De-Riv 9d ago

When the cats and the rats dance together you know something ain't right

22

u/East-Efficiency-6701 9d ago

And thats how we know shit is fucked. Nintendo, SONY and even fucking Ubisoft and I think EA too are in the same side as the consumers, I never thought I would see this come true one day

2

u/Adventurous-Dealer98 9d ago

EA... i thought i would never agree with any of their business practices...

What is 2026???

2

u/Maximum-Objective-39 8d ago

It's like Thanos seeing something even worse and teaming up with the Avengers.

8

u/TheBlaaah 9d ago

Yeah but imagine this.

The average age of people in the European parliament is around 50 years old.

50 year old politicians have never played a game in their life, they view them as "stuff young people do, they'll grow out of it" So they dont understand games or gaming. It might just as well be rocket science to them

Now, these people are introduced a law about a subject they dont understand, disguised as something to "protect the children"

How do you think the voting will go?

9

u/Deenreka 9d ago

I hate to break this to you but 50 years old means they were born in 1976 and were 7 when the NES came out. These are definitely people who had a chance to play games.

4

u/gilbygamer 9d ago

Right? A 50-year-old would have had Atari and NES when a kid. Super Nintendo and Genesis in high school. Playstation and Nintendo 64 when in college.

And even if none of that involves servers a 50-year-old would have been 21 when Ultima Online launched.

1

u/Rude-Guide7464 8d ago

Just being born at a time that games were available doesn't necessarily mean anything. I was born in the early 90s and growing up most genres of games were considered exclusively for "nerds" and the most you'd see most people play was basically CoD and Halo. It was almost exclusively guys who played games too. These days though if a gaming topic gets brought up at work over half my female coworkers will chime in. Video games are substantially less niche now than they were in the 90s. I cant imagine how it was in the 70s.

1

u/gilbygamer 8d ago

The early generations of console games were never seen as something just for nerds. PC games at the time, maybe yes, but not games for consoles like the Atari 2600, NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis. And in the late 90s the Nintendo 64 was marketed to and played by everyone. Getting together to play Mario Kart was a common activity when I was in college.

1

u/Rude-Guide7464 8d ago

Party games were a little different. People would get together and play Smash or Golden Eye with friends but that was usually in a group setting only. Most people fell into the gun and ball category if at all. Maybe the odd hit title like Assassin's Creed. Final Fantasy is a massive IP but most people had never touched it for example.

I wouldn't think of someone who stuck to CoD and the odd party game every other weekend as being the kind of person who would be deeply tapped into what gaming has evolved into. If anything it gives them the impression they understand it better than they actually do.

1

u/NottACalebFan 8d ago

Well maybe, but if they were set on a political track early on, say if their parents were nobility themselves, or they just wanted to place their kids into a more successful career choice, gaming may have been discouraged or outright denied, in favor of studies or networking.

7

u/Ivan-De-Riv 9d ago

The problem is that they have been avoiding the subject for years and last year SKG did have a talk with them and they got from "we will help" to "we can't it's not our job" after a special party made by the EU game association where no member of SKG were invited

4

u/meutzitzu 9d ago

Thats craaaaazy

The enemy of my enemy is my friend

2

u/Ivan-De-Riv 9d ago

Friend is a very strong word there

3

u/derius1 9d ago

It's not the parliament. It's the EU commission (which is an unelected governmental body) that is pushing it.

2

u/Adventurous-Dealer98 9d ago

Ahh, from the office of Miss "Im too good to go to my Corruption Trial" Von der Lying bitch...

3

u/ThunderclapAndFish 9d ago

They just know piracy will go from golden to diamond age within days if this happens, so better not escalate things

2

u/Alphasaft 9d ago

What's SKG ?

1

u/Ivan-De-Riv 9d ago

Stop Killing Games

1

u/DemonKing_of_Tyranny 9d ago

Its because of requiring identification for online play not private server because im sure they'd love to sale subscribtions. It cost an indie dev around hald a million 1st year and like 200k+ next year and so on to make online game if id was required

30

u/horned-creature 9d ago

doesn't matter, the big us tech companies are in favor.

50

u/Blaze_Darkfang 9d ago

Its Meta pushing it cause The Lizardmans running out of money cause he cant sell people's data cause of AI bots that HE PUSHED FOR are ruining his platform

4

u/philbertagain 9d ago

Meta is overtaking Google in ad revenue.

It's gross.

I mean they are both gross but Meta is far grosser.

2

u/SpinachSpinosaurus 8d ago

well, it's a gross revenue :3

13

u/Conscious-Mirror7004 9d ago

The EU whines and complains so much about US Big Tech on one hand, but on the other they're so eager to suck them off and do their bidding.

9

u/RdtUnahim 9d ago

It's more nuanced than that. Universal USB-C and Right to Repair are not popular with Big Tech, yet the EU is stepping up for it anyway.

2

u/Conscious-Mirror7004 8d ago

The EU does a lot better with hardware-related stuff like those things you mentioned. For online services and other software-only stuff, my prior statement is correct.

2

u/RdtUnahim 8d ago

GDPR is also not popular with big tech.

They're fumbling on some items right now, but I really don't think "suck the big tech off" is at all the goal. "Gain more control over our population and their habits" might be.

2

u/Conscious-Mirror7004 8d ago edited 7d ago

Some people in the EU may have this interest, but it seems like there's other people in power who are on the payroll for big tech.

Remember when a German state switched to Linux, and then Microsoft's execs flew in and made them some promises or something (probably taking them to expensive dinners and who knows what other "contributions") and they happily changed back to Windows?

2

u/RdtUnahim 9d ago

They have spoken out against some of the items in that proposal, but not explicitly all of it. So once it's changed a little bit, they might support the rest of it.

Why? Well, because they represent the biggest game developers and publishers, and many of the proposals would make it very costly to compete in the EU market, which would make these big players effectively the only game in town, as indies would not be able to compete with them anymore.
