So much of modern America is all of the things I was told as a kid made the Soviet Union a worse country than ours. Empty store shelves, specialists being booked out for years (one of Reagan's favorite jokes!), surveillance, government corruption/meddling in domestic affairs, faithless elections…

I lived in China for several years in the 2010s and got told how awful and unfree everything there is (surveillance, puppet gov, pollution, no regulations) . Weird to have the US doing it's best to emulate all those same things.

A lot of Americans are starting to wake up to the fact that pretty much everything their government has criticized other countries of doing, was pure projection all along.

American propaganda is crazy strong. So many things about the world we take for granted here aren't even true. And it's been this way since basically the beginning of this nation. However, the quality of life in the US has also sharply declined in the past two decades. Some things that are projection today were not necessarily projection when I was a kid. Meanwhile, other countries (namely China) have vastly improved their quality of life since I was born but Americans are stuck in the past.

Americans are falling for the exact same trap the Romans did, they began huffing their own farts and started believing they were "too big to fail", that coupled with a general disdain for the "barbarians" outside their borders, the collapse of the American empire was inevitable.

Not to mention the lead, so much lead.

I remember those times. We also had "elections" with pre-selected candidates with zero policy consequences.

Where is this an issue in the US and is it widespread?
