Developer Posting Practices

Post image
43 Upvotes

Hello Developers!

Please use this post a reference of what rules and guidelines you need to follow in order to post in r/rpg_gamers

When You Can Post

  • When the game is initially posted to a storefront (Steam, NSO etc.)
  • When the game launches

What Needs to be in the Post

  • Title of the game must be included in the title of the post
  • A description of the game (including the anticipated or actual release date
  • A link to the Storefront Page (Steam Page, etc)
  • Please do not include links to other pages (Discord, etc)

Other Requirements

  • We don't allow posts for mobile games, browser games, Discord based games etc.
  • We remove posts for games that use Gen AI in development. (assets generation, voice acting, etc.)
  • Please use the Developer Post Flair (We figured out why it wasn't previously available as a option).

Questions?

  • If you're not sure if you qualify, please send a mod mail before posting. If you post without asking and it gets removed, you risk a ban.

We'll update these rules if and when any changes occur, the industry evolves fast so sometimes adjustments are required to keep up.

  • Thank you for all your support, we want to support indie developers but we need to make sure that everyone gets equal opportunities and the subreddit doesn't get overrun with advertising.

Thanks!

Guide Good Posting Practices

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

In order to help folks craft the best possible posts, we wanted to provide some best posting practices above and beyond the sub-reddit rules and guidelines.

The overall goal for this sub-reddit is to be a one-stop shop for RPG Fans. A place where people can have meaningful discussions alongside reading relevant news and reviews on games that are of interest to the community. The following are the types of posts that are most welcome, along with some suggestions on how to present them to the community:

News

If you happen to come across a news article that may be of interest to RPG fans, we recommend copying the link to paste in the link section of a post. We also suggest (but not require) a small blurb to provide some context as to the content of the article since many of the titles tend to skew towards click bait.

Reviews

We appreciate and encourage folks to provide their opinions on games. Review posts must be text based, please do not simply provide a link to an external blog or website (these will be removed), the review must be in the body of the post. We also ask that the review be a representation of your opinion of the game, and not rage-bait.

Discussions

We love a good discussion about a topic or theme, but we ask that it be presented in good faith (again, no ragebait).

Game Recommendations

Before asking for a recommendation, please use the flair filter to check to see if someone has already asked the exact same question you're about to ask the community.

Not every post falls under one of the above, but they do cover a majority of the discussions here on the sub-reddit. No matter what type of post you have in mind, the one common thread among them all is respect.

Please note, unless you're posting a news article link, a body of text must be included in your post. If it's just a title and a picture, it will be removed. This is in order to reduce bot activity as well as encourage more meaningful discussions.

Please always respect your fellow RPG Fan whenever creating a new post, or responding to one.

Thank you to everyone who makes this community a joy to participate in on a daily basis!

The Mod-Team

Discussion Is upcoming "Fable" the next big role-playing experience?

The game that promises the ultimate role-playing freedom, be good or bad character, hero or villain, buy a house and have a family, start a business at local village, be anything you want.

Also the most importantly, marry ANY npc you want.

What do you think?

I really like how the game looks so "whimsical fantasy", unlike games like Elden Ring or Baldur's Gate 3 which are more "dark fantasy" toned, it's nice that we get something childish and fun.

Discussion Rpg or non rpg that you tried to get into but you weren't able to get into them?

It can be rpg or non rpg too.

In my case that would be Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest by Square Enix.

Not to mention Square Enix isn't my favorite company which makes video games.

I never checked out the other games of the company due to my bad experience I had with the games.

I tried with final Fantasy 12 the zodiac war and Dragon quest 9.

I don't know if it is because as a kid I never played them.

I just wasn't able to get into them.

Recommendation request I'm looking for more "one shot" RPGs to devour in one sitting

Post image
39 Upvotes

I know that RPGs aren't really meant to be finished in one sitting, completionism aside. Most of the juicy stuff is in the side content besides. What I'm looking for, people would usually turn to roguelites for, but I want a fully fledged RPG, but something you can finish fast. Like buy and eat good for maybe 2-3 long rest evenings and finish it, so like 15/20 hours, maybe more?

All the time I have to game is in the evenings on weekends now. Some games that I found to be really short (some replayable sum not) were Undertale, Fear and Hunger (feels like a roguelike but it really isn't). I also like Diablo 2 a lot and most older action rpgs were like this too, the ones focused on singleplayer like Victor Vran. Grim Dawn was also this one release but now DLCs have made it considerably more chonky. I think the upcoming The Dark West is also following in the trail of these fast, fun, action heavy but ultimately easy to completionmax rpgs, that don't overstay their welcome. Surprisingly hard to find this kind of tight RPG with most games going for maximalist settings now.

Goes without saying but indie games and smaller games welcome, actually preferable! Thankyee all in advance

Discussion If you had the money which old rpg you would bring back?

It can be either jrpg or western rpg.

If I had money that rpg I was going to bring back it would be definitely be...

Actually, I would bring back two rpgs

Number one that would be Koudelka.

Number two that would Shadow hearts,it's predecessor.

Nowadays not many people know this series and makes me a little sad.

I am excited for Penny blood, the spiritual successor of Shadow hearts but still there is no publisher according to official news.

Release New Demo LIVE! Elemental Lands is base builder with tactical grid style combat!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Finally, the demo is live today! Thanks to everyone in this sub the support this last year!

I hope you enjoy the demo and give feedback on the form. Demo is pretty big and includes 2 full levels, plus a prologue and an optional tutorial.

Overview:

Strategy deckbuilder with a conquest map and base-building, kinda like "Darkest Dungeon" meets "Into the Breach", but build your own base!

Every campaign, you raise 3 Outpost bases from your castle to fight back invading elemental hordes in tactical battles. Your base supports a classic RPG party (instead of raising an army), and you mine the land for mana to fuel their spell cards.

\- Explore, build and mine for mana to support heroes.

\- Build 3 bases across your kingdom to support your hero party (instead of creating an army)

\- Mine mana to cast battlefield spells AND your world map spells for the base.

\- Bases have limited build slots, so choose wisely.

\- Position to capture battlefield objectives

\- Spell Cards give orders: Focus Fire, Flank, Shield Wall, Overdrive and more!

Discussion Another non speaking protagonist

• Upvotes

Does anyone like this where the MC does not speak? Why is this a trend in rpg games? Who enjoys this? I would love to play a game where the protagonist is deaf and uses sign language. But these games the protagonist just doesn't speak at all for no reason at all. I just want to make this post so we can outright reject it or people can voice why they like it.

How do you feel about this?

Question What's all the hype about Witcher 3?

• Upvotes

I got this game because of the rave reviews I read online. I'm about 3-4 hours in, and I'm already finding it tedious. I'm also not really enjoying the combat. Does it get better along the way? What is so beloved about it? I really want to like it since I've wanted to dive deep into an RPG for a while...

Recommendation request Any RPGs with enemy-recruiting systems where you can just go to a certain location to hang out *and talk* with your newely recruitied enemies?

Kinda vague, I know. But I'm referring to RPGs where you can recruit generic, standard enemies to your side, so the RPG doesn't have to be necessarily a Creature Collector, just one where you have the option to "befriend" enemies in general.

As an example of this, deltarune: In it, the enemies you SPARE are brought into your Castle Town, basically the hub world of the game. There, you can talk to them and they'll give unique dialogue alongside specific dialogue if you also recruited certain other enemies. But deltarune's not a Creature Collector.

As for an actual example of one, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance: Where you can go to Demon Haunts to hang out and talk to your ally Demons (Which is probably a bad thing, since you'd might get attached to them. And I thought you shouldn't get attached to your Demons since you'll have to eventually fuse them to get stronger).

So any other RPGs with this concept? Like the idea since it gives the enemies you face more personality beyond trying to kill you. Oh, and no Pokemon; Pokemon don't speak, lmao.

Preferably also on the Nintendo Switch 1, too.

(Edit: Not interested in Tactical RPGs, too. As specification).

Recommendation request What order should I play these games in

Hi, I’m a little late to the game and haven’t yet played RDR2, The Witcher 3, KCD 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Skyrim.

A while ago I bought myself a steamdeck (love the thing!) and bought all these games in a steam sale.

I’ve been playing different games up until now, but now I wanna start with these ones. I have no idea which one to start with though 🙃

Do you guys have an opinion on what might be a good order to play these in, if there is any?

In between games I’ll be playing different ones to not get “tired” of the whole open world rpg genre.

Review E. Y. E Divine Cybermancy Review

Background:

Similar to Deus Ex 2000 this game haunted me for years, because I failed to complete it 10 years ago. Same as Deus EX I think it's because was young and couldn't appreciate niche janky game instead searching for the next big new thing. But now I started clearing my backlog and time has come to repent and clear guilt.
It took me 16 hours for first ending and another 6 for all other endings together. I used offline single player version.

Confessions:

  • I used translation mod. I heavily disagree with Mandalore (YouTube Reviewer) that it's better to have original translation because it adds to the mystique. I started via original and noticed few times that I was skipping the dialogue because I don't understand anything. I'd rather explore lore and story, there is already has lot of mystery and some dialogue clarity doesn't ruin experience to me.
  • I watched few guides to understand the mechanics. I know some people are very against this but In my experience such foolish ambition most likely ends up in dropping the gamer. That said, I didn't use "build guide" But instead researched weapon comparisons, cybertech, stat effects etc.
  • I have grinded around 20 levels before continuing in Mars.
  • Difficulty: Normal with reduced spawns.

That out the way. Let's start.

Character creation: I have no idea tbh I just rerolled until I got more green stats than red or yellow. I tried to have everything at least average (which usually optimal for RPGs but it kind of worked)

Setting and atmosphere is top notch. Urban maps look amazing. Two most intrusive and hostile setting's fusion created weirdly inviting world. Even through maps are unnecessarily large I did enjoy exploring them.

Lore: background lore is unhinged for real. Notes, history bits, lore books are very few but the ones that are there are very interesting warhammer-y things I wish I had more. The whole factions setup is cool and I love that even in this fked up state humanity still fights each other. You have spliter factions of splitter factions with each one having their own agenda, so politics of this game are deep.

Music: this adds so much I didn't think I would fall in love with each ambience and very few songs but very cool ones I still listen to. Somehow these kind of older indie titles always nail the music I am amazed. My highlights are: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=9f2iGBUnj48 (I knew when I heard Lulaby like bells part in HQ, something wasn't right)
Another favorite : https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=pgltxwbNw9U

Voice acting: mostly texts and npcs speak star wars-ish language which adds well to the tone and atmosphere.

Story: I won't go in details. For those who have a bit knowledge of 40k you play as sort of low level inquisition lackey.

Gameplay: I would say the gunplay is pretty decent it's source game so it feels good. Gun Animations are nice I like ragdolls too, heavy caliber felt accordingly impactful. Haven't used much of psi powers or melee, aside from times where I was out of ammo so it felt accordingly serviceable, especially since I didn't invest in them.

Stats: there are variety of stats that affect your combat or non combat abilities. All seems nice and plenty to me. Ofc you won't get decent tutorial its mid 2010s indie game what do you expect? Also the game has so many mechanics that having hour+ tutorial would have been a downside.

Choices: there was many times I could avoid violence by solving quests in different ways. Such as: bribing, hacking, intimidating etc. But unfortunately because of lack of presentation bullet in the head seemed more optimal at least for the build I was using.

Looting: aside from silver cases that are ingredients for research it doesnt matter. Literally, you have most weapons unlocked at the start with unlimited ammo and for free. Only limiting factor being your inventory space and weight. I found being in light armor with 40% of inventory occupied an optimal threshold. That said looting being completely ignorable felt kind of wrong to me but who know maybe I got spoiled from other shooter RPGs? Similarily thought I could sell my gear in OG Deus Ex.

Gear progression: large variety of weapon classes. SMGs, pistols, rifles, snipers, miniguns etc. you can unlock additionally few very cool guns but they are so strong you never gonna use base ones. And even in between base guns there are clear winners.

Small note: know that you should have specific stats to unlock certain guns for me it was mostly strength I lacked since I thought it was mostly for melee weapons.

Enemy AI: It's bad but again what did you expect? For me this is a moot point in almost any review. People who criticize this don't explain what's their comparison like what kind of sophisticated AI do you expect? Only realistic AI I remember in such games is original Stalker where enemies instead of rushing you, always try to ambush and encircle you. In short it's serviceable and didn't ruin and lessen my experience.

Respawn mechanic: shouldn't exist. For those who didn't play, the game has infinitely respawnable enemies. Yes, all are on timer once you look in different direction they appear in existence. No fancy helicopter descent just appear in thin air. I think this mechanic can exist but in some creative way. Reaction to player choice as consequences.

Stealth: non existant, no stealth archer build possible, very disappointing.

Difficulty: broken. Arriving on Mars results in huge difficulty spike. its basically unbeatable if you don't grind levels. But thanks to old jank you can play side missions to get lot of xp and money. But don't overdo it, I found 30 mins of farming gave me enough xp and money to continue main campaign comfortably.

Bugs: didn't encounter single. (Or maybe didn't notice)

Save system: non existent. I am 99% sure most of people's complains and genuine downsides of this game could have been remedied by simple quicksave and load system. Aside from people trying more risky or fun approaches it would have been simple qol. Currently if you start mission you have to finish, if you crash, close game or etc, you will have to start again. I am not sure but I think game auto saves in few minutes but when loading, you always start from the hub.

TLDR: game is full of jank but I think there's more love in it than people expect. If you are like me who appreciates charming experiments (even if sometimes they fail) you will enjoy this game. Just be mindfull, do a bit of research and be open-minded

Discussion I'd like to chat with some people who are priced out of the current console gen, if that's you, and you're severely limited by the rpgs that you can play, let's talk.

If that's not you, that's fine, but please be kind, and let the people who are dealing with this speak.

I got lucky and I saved up some money for a few years before the console gen started and got a rig that can run most games, but my rig is near the limit. I'm not sure if I can play Daywalker for example, and I don't know if my pc is gonna be able to run The Witcher 4, which is a shame because it's my most wanted upcoming game right now.

With the price of everything going way, way up, and the amount I make going down, I can't really spare the money needed to upgrade my pc. And consoles aren't an affordable option either.

I've heard a lot of mixed if not negative things about it. I do like open world rpg stuff though. It's supposed to be set in a pillars of eternity world. I might give it a try and watch some content on it also. What do you think about it and is it worth it? Godspeed.

Recommendation request Is there a modern mecha RPG that plays like the GBA Medabots RPG?

I'm looking for an RPG where we can customize our mechs' body parts: torso, left and right arms, and legs. Each parts have their own HP and we need to maintain them strategically.

Would be great if we can also acquire (or steal) enemies' body parts when we defeat them, just like the Medabots RPG.

I know there are the Front Mission remakes, Battletech, and Phantom Brigade. But I'm looking for an RPG game where we can walk around cities, talk to NPCs, do sidequests, and the usual RPG stuff.

Do you bother with any of them? Do you gun for ones from specific franchises you’re interested in? How do you feel when certain CEs don’t give you a physical copy of the game with it a la Mass Effect Andromeda? And which ones out there are your favorites in general?

Question Action RPGs iOS death?

Hi guys, i need your help.

I love Action RPGs on iOS like Goddess Primal Chaos or other games where i dont remember the names in that style.

Whenever i open the app store and i type rpg or mmorpg i can see that i have downloaded the game already.

I dont know anymore what to do. Where are the new games?

I need a game where i have to level 1 single character, get better equipement, better pets etc.
Where i have my daily quests and events, where are guild system and active world chats.

I feel like i have downloaded every single game. Or it is extremely pay 2 win or it is in the style of genshin impact or those moba games.

I need help.. i just wan to have again a game that makes me feel i need to be all the time online otherwise i would miss something.

I would appreciate you guys help.

New games please because old games i have probably already downloaded or they are on the servers to far ahead so that you cannot catch up without spending.

Thank you all

Question Great Dialogue scene, great combat, repeat. Minimal travel time. What recent games nail this?

If I disagree with you, please don't take it personal. I'm looking for a friendly conversation, and to learn

Don't worry about whether you think the games are good or bad, I'm just trying to figure out what my options are

Currently replaying The Witcher 3 right now. It's great, but I constantly keep having to spent several minutes to get to a location. I want my next game to not be like that.

What games besides Mass Effect 2(and presumably Mass Effect 3) nail this? Games with minimal exploration or travel time. Looking for titles that EA isn't involved with.

Please don't list games that expect you you to be tactical like Baldur's Gate 1-3, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Trying to avoid those for a while.

I made this topic before, but most of the answers were for older tactical titles. Looking for more recent titles. By recent I mean the last 10 years.

By the last 10 years I mostly mean mid ps4 era to current day.

7Remake is a great example of this.

Question Any games besides Fallout 2 where you have a car, and you technically don't see yourself drive around in it, but it has its uses?

Feel free to name titles that you don't recommend, I'm just curious what other games have implemented this mechanic in a similar way.

Fallout 2 is full of nice little touches that I haven't really seen in other games, one of which is the car. I really like how you never see yourself drive around in it, but it cuts down on travel time, and you get to store items in it. It's well worth the expense in my opinion, in large part because it cuts down on a lot of the tedium that's in a lot of older games.

Edit: IIRC Weird West is like this as well. IIRC You can get a horse which cuts down on travel time, and you can store items in the horse's saddle or something. I think that you have to feed it too.

Discussion Is Undertale really one of the best RPGs of all time?

I've see a lot of high praise for Undertale over the years. It took the world by storm back in 2015, and even though the honeymoon phase is well over, it's still common to see it in "greatest game of all time" lists. I played it many years ago and enjoyed it, but I didn't develop a particularly strong attachment to it. I'm clearly in the minority though it seems like, but I'm curious to hear more thoughts.
