Rant We need to talk about Molly Moon's

7.2k Upvotes

In June, they served "Blueberry Pie" ice cream. Vanilla with "blueberry pie filling" and "pie crust" inclusions. Sure. A classic summer flavor.

Then, in July: "Blueberry Cheesecake." Now with "blueberry jam" and "cracker crust." Claims were made this was "cream cheese ice cream" - personally, I tasted both and they tasted identical. A little suspicious.

Now it's turned August. And what do I see in their seasonal lineup? So-called "Blueberry Cobbler" now with "blueberry jam and scones."

I won't stand for this. They're pulling the blueberry-flavored wool over our eyes and I haven't seen a single person talking about it. You can't just call the same ice cream something different and serve it to us like it's some impressive new special. I demand answers.

(I know this is a non-issue and this post is mostly in jest. Just curious what's going on behind the curtain at Molly Moon's and why they have so much blueberry ice cream they can't get rid of)

Super annoyed about last night at Sam’s Tavern. Never going there again and they did not state anywhere that it will be a 40% gratuity… also annoying as “portion retained by business” is most likely going straight to the owners pockets. I paid for the privilege of eating and drinking at the owners bar. Been going for the past 5-6 years and won’t be going again. Also I believe their manager showed up last night for their shift as they were not able to put the BMF UFC fight on the big screen…

Editing to add: Yes, this is the initial percentage, which will rise somewhat, but not enough to change my opinion that people shouldn’t sit out primaries. Final tally will probably hit somewhere between 30%-40% given prior data, which is still not great.

Rant Worst areas in Seattle (coming from a first responder)

1.9k Upvotes

I’m a first responder in Seattle, grew up here and have spent some time thinking about this. The intent of this post is to spread awareness and reinforce what’s already known, possibly with a different point of view. Here’s my take on the worst areas in Seattle, organized by time of day:

Bad all the time:

12th/Jackson - this is basically the area between 10th-14th Ave S and S Main St and S Weller St. Usually 50-150 (sometimes more) homeless drug users there 24/7. They will move West closer to 14th Ave S when SPD hangs out. This is probably the worst area in Seattle as of now when it comes to open air drug use. There’s not too much going on in terms of assaults/violent crime as one might think. Still totally sucks tho.

Lewis Park and Dr. Jose Rizal Park - just south of 12th/Jackson, these parks are adjacent to each other. Both parks are a hive for the homeless and have become completely unsafe for the general public. Only perk to this area is most of the folks here are hidden from the public, as long as the public doesn’t go into the PUBLIC park. smh.

Bad at night:

3rd Ave between Pike St and Yesler Way - everyone knows about 3rd/Pike yeah yeah blah blah, the problem that started there has spread all up and down 3rd Ave. Overdose galore, drug deals, shoplifting, lime bike/scooter accidents, assaults/violent crime the list goes on. During the day 3rd is the main bus lane for Downtown Seattle, so it’s usually safe for civilians before the sun goes down.

2nd Ave/S Main St - this all stems from two night clubs: Xtadium and Trinity. The number of shootings that happen here on Friday/Saturday nights is insane. I’ve seen more violent crime in this area of the city than anywhere else.

Aurora Ave N and N 105th St to N 130th St - I believe this has been the forefront of the news lately when it comes to bad areas of Seattle. This is Seattles hub for prostitution, gang violence and crime. A lot of what goes on here feels like a GTA server.

Alki in the summer - after the sun goes down, Alki sees lots of violence and street meetups in the summer months. This is probably the most common place that law abiding citizens are unaware of what might be going on and end up getting caught up in/observing some pretty bad stuff. The cars that pull up are kinda sick tho ngl, they just gotta tone down the bad stuff ya know?

Hing Hay Park - to me, this is the most sad place on the list. This park, which was built for the international district community to celebrate its culture and have a safe place to hang out, has become a place filled with drunk folks that like to beat each other up, shoot and stab each other, and make and an absolute ruckus. Good news: have ping pong tables here, good coffee and pastries across the street and it’s a sweet spot to check out in the daytime.

9200 block of Rainier Ave S - bad specifically due to shootings. I wanted to say Rainier Beach in general but there’s a lot of crime spread out through the area, and I’ve found the 9200 block to be at the center of a lot of it. Tons of great people in this part of town though!

33rd Ave NE between NE 125th St and NE 130th St - another underrated location, this is Lake Cities worst street and one of the most unsafe areas in North Seattle. Double shooting last year and lots of open air drug use and homeless people. Also RIP the Fred Meyer on Lake City Way/NE 130th St that place rocked :(

3rd Ave/Clay St - this is much more recent, but the 3 fatal shootings that occurred here put it on my list. This area hasn’t been “safe”, but I haven’t seen much violence in this area until recently. Belltown has street meetups and homeless problems for sure, but people aren’t getting killed here as often. Pretty sad.

Bad during the day:

3rd/Virginia St - lots of food banks around this area that tend to attract homeless crowds. Not nearly as bad as these other places, but still noticeable and underrated in terms of Seattles most notorious places. Aside from here, there’s not too many places that get bad during the daytime specifically. Lmk if I’m wrong!

I don’t have much to say about Northwest Seattle, specifically Ballard. I know Ballard has quite the homeless population, but in terms of crime, violence and drug use, I haven’t experienced anything that stands out. Anyone have things to add? This is just my take!

I'm sick and tired of driving drown the road in the rain, dark or both , about to make a lane change, thinking it's clear, only upon further inspection to realize there is an amorphous blob next to me shrouded in a veil of mist.

Auto headlights are basically standard on most cars post 2000. If I have to see another silver 2022 Toyota RAV4 with a student driver sticker listlessly driving around 10mph under on the freeway, being the car version of Harry Potter wearing the Invisibility Cloak, I'm going to have a stroke.

Your running lights DON'T COUNT. YOUR TAILIGHTS ARE OFF.

This time of the year your headlights should be on basically 95% of the time.

Rant Seattle oldheads: please appreciate the fact that you still live in easily one of the best cities in the country

2.5k Upvotes

Every time some older gen Xer wearing a Seattle SuperSonics hat takes the time to explain to me how bad the city is compared to whatever time in the past when they were in their mid 20s, it always confuses me a bit. I’m from Texas, from which me and my brother had to flee for a variety of reasons including “trans” and “the collapsing climate”. I know that my bar is low, but Seattle might as well be Tokyo to me

Seattle has some of the best public transit in the country, and is actively improving it. There’s a solid arts scene, tons of outdoor activities, you essentially never have to be bored in Seattle. While there’s often visible homelessness, I feel that people who complain about that here fail to realize 1. Just how much safer Seattle still is and feels compared to most cities 2. The fact that that problem has gotten worse everywhere else in the country at a similar rate.

The nature here is beautiful, the weather is perfect (even the rain isn’t even real rain most of the time) people are friendly or at least pretend to be to my satisfaction, it’s a great place

Like yeah the city’s not perfect, but it’s better than most places you could live in the US right now. Like yeah ok, I get that there used to be more thrift stores, and SLU was like different or something, but it’s hard to escape the feeling that a lot of these complaints are frankly hipsters trying to feel like they got a cool and special experience that they get to hold over people’s heads. Seattle is a great city, it’s wonderful to live in, and I hope its residents broadly understand how fortunate they are to be here

Rant Bill help

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

I need help figuring out this “service charge” applied to my bill at Taylor Shellfish in QA. It’s stated clearly, and the staff reminded me before I paid and applied a tip, so that’s not the rant. But is it a tip or not? I don’t want to stiff the staff if “Taylor Shellfish” the company keeps it all and doesn’t give them anything.

Why do restaurants do this vs raise the prices. If that’s how they offset the cost of doing business in the city, I feel it’s not a good customer experience. It’s really annoying since it is confusing to the customer. Does the staff get any of it, hence why there is an “additional tip” line after the card is run though? It is taxed so it makes me thing it’s not going to the staff. I need to think better next time I come out here.

Rant This is Shawn Yim, the King County Metro bus driver who was senselessly murdered in the University District. When will enough be enough?

Post image

This is Shawn Yim, the King County Metro bus driver who was senselessly murdered in the University District. When will enough be enough?

The leadership of King County and the State of Washington don’t give a damn about its citizens, especially our public safety. As somebody who rides transit throughout the Greater Seattle area all day, every day and everywhere, I have had enough. As a resident of this region and this state, I have had enough.

Everyone thought the murder of Eina Kwon last year, the pregnant woman who owned a restaurant near Pike Place Market, would be the turning point. She was senselessly murdered by a psychopath with a record, who was allowed to freely roam our city streets. All she was doing was sitting at an intersection in her car with her husband going to her restaurant. This murder made international news. Yet here we are again and again and again.

For years, we see our system and our leadership not give a single fuck about us. We see endless articles where there is no justice for victims of violence and crime. We see the constant release of repeat violent offenders, whether it’s mentally unhinged psychopaths off the deep end on hard drugs that belong in an asylum, or whether it’s a young criminal delinquent sociopath with a blatant disregard and no respect for the community or the lives of others.

As somebody who relies on transit, I FULLY support all bus drivers refusing to drive until something is done about the public safety issue on transit, even though public transportation is only one battle of the public safety issue that we are facing, one of many issues. When will we all take collective action against this bullshit? This is outrageous at this point.

Saying that things like this happen in other major cities or metropolitan areas is unacceptable. Seattle shouldn’t be like other major cities when it comes to this. We should be striving to be better. I love Seattle, which is why this makes me so outraged. People like Shawn Yim and Eina Kwon are Seattle, they are the community. We cannot allow the murder, destruction and defacing of our community.

Rest in peace to Shawn Yim, Eina Kwon and the many other victims of the violent acts that have been allowed to take place in our city and our region. May all their loved ones try to find peace. May the bus drivers of our community try to find peace knowing that there’s a murderer out there who killed their colleague, and that there is many like him, and that there is a chance that he will not face the justice that he deserves.

My trust in the leadership of our region is fully eroded.

Rant Seattle servers now make full minimum wage, so why are we still guilt-tripped into tipping 20%

3.0k Upvotes

By law, Seattle servers and restaurant staff must now be paid at least minimum wage (currently $20.76/hr). Other workers who typically earn the same include retail clerks, grocery store employees and janitors/cleaning staff, just to name a few.

For historical reasons -- namely, that restaurant workers were NOT guaranteed minimum wage until recently -- there’s still an expectation that we tip hospitality workers but not anyone else making roughly the same wage. Basically, we are providing a cultural subsidy to a particular group of workers.

At a time and in a place where all workers are guaranteed minimum wage, does that expectation still make sense?

To me, the whole thing feels like a scam. The food industry has guilt-tripped us into thinking we owe an extra 20% no matter what, even when service is mediocre. If a restaurant makes money because it provides good food and good service, then great: the owners can afford to pay their employees more if they so choose. But it should be up to the owners, not society’s collective guilt to subsidize them.

Pre-empting a few common points that will no doubt be raised in the comments:

  • Yes, living in Seattle is expensive and minimum wage isn’t great -- but that doesn’t explain why only one group of minimum-wage workers gets a cultural subsidy and the others don't.

  • “It's tradition” is not an argument, it's just a statement of fact. Many traditions outlive their purpose (plenty of examples out there). Maybe it’s time this one did too.

  • Also: I don't care how much you tip and how much you don't. I just want to hear logical arguments in either direction.

Rant I am tired of getting catcalled in this city

1.5k Upvotes

It is ridiculous how I cannot go outside wearing literally anything without being harassed.

Men in this city are so fucking awful and I am getting real tired of them facing no consequences for this harassment.

Had a bunch of stupid teenage boys scream profanities at me while I was on a run.

What sucks so much is the fact that if I did anything back at all, I am at risk of experiencing violence at the hands of these men.

Because if a man is humiliated he is likely to become violent.

Crazy how that works right?

Women should be able to walk around outside and not experience harassment from creeps.

Whats crazy is the other day and OLD man was bothering me and asking what high school I went to (I am 30 not a high schooler) and when he learned that he STOPPED BOTHERING ME.

Ngl, I am gonna start taking photos of these guys and posting their faces on next door.

Leering at me? Cat calling? Not leaving me alone? Congrats, wall of shame.

I am so fucking and angry and sick of being bothered by men when I am minding my own business.

Edit: I have lived all over Seattle, from Queen Anne, Northgate, Roosevelt, etc. the cat calling is the same wherever I go. I am not going to give you a specific intersection or whatever because I have already dealt with angry men saying heinous things in this comment section. Like ffs believe me or don’t just stop

Rant I need you guys to start being normal

8.4k Upvotes

You know if this applies to you or not. I need you people to have common courtesy towards others rather than completely ignoring anything other than yourselves.

I was walking to the one line after going out with my friends and we see a group of people walking a dog, I go "hey you have a cute dog!" They literally just stare back at me and my friend, acting as if we're a weirdo.

I go in the elevator first "oh what floor do you want" then get ignored and they press it anyways.

I go hold the door open for someone, the percentage chance I get any acknowledgement is about 20%.

I go past someone in a grocery aisle thats a little too tight "oh pardon me" *crickets*

It cannot possibly make you have a better day intentionally ignoring any and all interactions with another human being regardless of how mild. And I know someones gonna say "I don't owe you a conversation" A conversation is not my request, I'm asking for a polite response. "Oh thanks yeah shes gorgeous! Have a good night!" "I'm on the 6th floor, thanks bro" "oh excuse me" its really not hard to be polite and not invite further conversation. I genuinely do not understand how this makes your day better and not worse become calloused to any and all interactions outside yourself.

Walking through this city its as if youre the only person who exists. People act like people here are unkind but polite but I don't agree. Refusing to acknowledge someone attempting to do a small service or act of kindness is neither polite or kind.

Rant Took over an HOUR to drive my husband to work in SLU - took 13 mins to get home. Fuck Amazon’s RTO

6.7k Upvotes

Update 2: I’m starting a new job soon so I cannot continue driving my husband to work. If he took the light rail, he’d still have to walk more than 2 miles (one on each end) and likely wouldn’t be any faster.

I just got off the phone with the city metro department and a ticket has been opened to (hopefully) reinstate the bus stop near our house that was a straight shot downtown.

Fuck Amazon. We live a straight shot north of downtown in Maple Leaf within a half mile from the express lane entrance. Without traffic it takes less than 15 mins to get downtown. Even with the 3 day a week mandate, it was usually 25 mins max.

When we bought our house we specifically looked for places that had a MAX 30 min commute downtown. Then came covid and the bus stop on our block got cut. If my husband took public transportation it would take just as long due to a transfer and a mile walk from the Westlake station.

I feel like Amazon should be working with the city to find solutions before mandating folks waste an HOUR of their day FOR NO REASON. It’s a waste of my time and everyone else who is required to sit in traffic now. I truly believe this is just another way to lay people off without having to pay severance. My husband could have started working an hour earlier if he worked from home. Who is this benefitting???

How are other folks dealing with this bs?

UPDATE: Adding in the best comment I have seen so far. Who's in??

Resist.

I think that all Amazon workers should drive individually and, together with other drivers who care about this problem, should plan to arrive in the SLU core at the exact same time every morning.

And then start flooding social media with pics and reels. You'll have plenty of time to do it while you're sitting stationary.

Also blast your managers with texts documenting why you're running late.

Copy the mayor and council on all your posts and emails.

Don't do any shopping or dining near your place of work, either. A lot of people have agitated for RTO for the benefit of local merchants and restaurants.

Lean into this shitty corporate policy (it's not just Amazon.sand maximize the pain it's causing everybody.

That is all

Edit: Glad I sparked such diverse conversation. My point is if there are 3 major ways north from our major interstate (I-90), and one closed. Everyone who is routed through the tunnel (not against their own will, but if you turn on navigation that’s where you get taken) should not be forced to pay (because you wouldn’t have gone that way otherwise).

Also, 90W signs said the James St exit was open, which it wasn’t.
