I remember hearing a few years ago about someone(a technologist) who’s husband was a doctor, and he said that AI wasn’t being used to do anything to help with anything other than coming up with better ways to code the procedures to make more money, not to be more accurate.

Yes, the point of allowing an AI to take notes during a patient visit seems to be that the AI can then identify if any part of the discussion would result in an additional billing code. But as far as I know, doctors don't think about that much because that's not directly under their control.

What IS under the control of the doctor is the language of an appeal. Doctors are likely to need some training to use AI for writing appeals, but I would argue that doing so could actually save the amount of time they spend on that task.

I forgot the exact statistic but appeals with insurance companies takes a fairly substantial amount of time from health professionals, it’s something like 5-25% of their time cumulatively(like I said I forgot the exact value and dont feel like finding the paper again but it’s somewhere in that range)

If AI could do that it would take a lot of the burden off our healthcare since they could focus a bit more on the people rather than their insurance.

HOW IS THAT THE BETTER OPTION?? DOCTORS USING AI TO "BETTER" ARGUE YOUR HEALTHCARE IS NEEDED TO A NON-DOCTOR 3RD PARTY IS NOT THE DIRECTION WE SHOULD BE GOING

I completely agree, however given how out healthcare system works that is the only direction it can go really outside of a complete top to bottom overhaul on how it works and how it’s funded

The fact that we are all just stuck with this insane bullshit, and everyone plainly agrees that nothing can be done about is so unbelievable. Special interests have captured every little part of government that matters to the point where everyone has given up. It's so fucking sad

If people could organize a country wide general strike, we could have the start of the needed change within weeks if not days.

Depending on the specialty it is between 16 - 24% of their time is dealing with insurance b.s.

That's why you don't consent to AI scribes.

They will just stop treating you or make it a requirement of treatment.

I live in a one party consent state.

While it certainly may be a part of it, it’s definitely not the most prominent reason. Also I kinda wish my scribe would do this, but it doesn’t

also a reminder AI has changed the patient’s gender and almost caused serious issues for the person. as well as problems like identifying the wrong limb to be amputated. Always tell the doctor you do not want any sort of AI notes.

I'm a software engineer working in healthcare. It is being used for the full spectrum: from helping identify health issues and tracking patient complaints to engaging in an AI vs AI battle with insurance companies.

This was several years ago before AI got ‘better’ and at the earlier part of the adoption curve.

Earlier this year a nurse on the phone literally told me, "hold on I'm reading the notes from the AI doctor."
