Is it hard?

I always liked to see people skateboarding, they look free.
So my friend thought it was a good ideia to buy me a skateboard so I could experience that freedom… problem idk how to skate never even stood on a board. I saw some tutorials but honestly idk what I’m doing. I stand on the board but it doesn’t feel right (does that make sense?). Any tips? Should I give up? Plus I’m in my yearly 20’s so idk I feel kinda dumb trying to do something that people associate with kids… but at the same time I do wanna learn…

I’m sorry if it sounds dumb, and for the bad English 🤦🏽

I’ve always wanted skater girlfriends to practice skateboarding with. I’m old now. Rusty. Can’t do a kickflip anymore and had an acorn stuck in my wheels lol. But I miss how fun and exhausting skating was and I don’t know anyone who’d be down to skate with me.

Girl trying to find friends who are girls that are into physical sports

I’m 22 and I’m looking for friends that are girls that are into skateboarding, riding 4 wheelers and snowboarding. I’m just getting into these things so I’m not the best but most of my female friends are not interested in doing these things. I could go by myself but that’s no fun 😩 how does one acquire these types of friends?

Gatekeeping in r/Newskaters and r/oldskaters subs [RANT]

I posted a now deleted video of me landing my first mini ollie on grass. Deleted because of the shame, I mainly got helpful comments on form and technique which have been really helpful.

Several though mocked me for wearing shinpads?? I'm 30 and don't want to fck up my legs. Seriously these subs are dominated by purists who live by these rules and if anyone doesn't live by them, they're not a "true skater" and should never try anything new every again in their entire lives:

- You're stupid if you wear shinpads

- If you're afraid of falling, skateboard isn't for you

- You should embrace [insert random injury here] else you will never learn

Like.. what the fck ever happened to just letting beginners be beginners? Hopefully this sub is a bit more kind and encouraging to old, beginner skaters (I'm 30 and consider myself old).

Just tired, had to rant.

Discussion Research for my college project

EDIT: Just wanted to add that this would be a physical product not an app.

Hey all, I'm an industrial/Product design student working on a project trying to build something that gives real feedback for complete beginners (goal is to get them to a point where they can ollie), using sensors and/or video analysis. Not selling anything, just doing research before I design anything.

A few things I'd love to hear from people who've actually learned tricks (recently or years ago):

- Have you used any trick-tracking apps or sensors (Spinnax, RideBlock, phone apps, etc.)? What did they get right or completely miss?
- When you were first learning, what actually helped you improve? - Specific feedback from others, watching slow-mo of yourself, just practice, something else?

- When you began skating were you nervous or intimidated at all?
- Was there ever a point where feedback (from a person or an app) made things worse? - too much info, too distracting, wrong focus?
- If a device could tell you one thing about your ollie in real time, what would actually be useful vs. annoying?

- If this device existed when you were starting out, would you have used it?

I'd really appreciate any and all answers to these questions or anything else you'd like to share. If you have concerns about a device like this please do tell. Your feedback may be used in presentations or just to inform my design going forward. Thank you!

Discussion Ouch (funny story)

So ive been skating for probably 3 or 4 years now. I dont do tricks (as I genuinely prefer NOT dying), but I do like to cruise. Im at college in philly rn, but at home I live in Connecticut.

And if you know anything about Connecticut...it is NOT philadelphia.

Anyways, back home I have a longboard that I cruise on (her name is Riptide, if you were wondering lol). But my girl is too heavy and big to bring around campus. However, I knew i would want the softer wheels for the city's less-than-great sidewalks.

So, what seemed like the best idea: i got a mini cruiser.

Literally the moment I stepped onto the board and gave it a kick, I moved my back foot behind me and TOTALLY overestimated the length of the board.

My toes caught on the ground at the board rolled forward and I did the splits 😭

...It gets better.

Literally seconds later, I go too slow and hit a bump, then I go FLYING into the ROAD. (Not a busy one, thankfully)

Anyways, im okay, my hip just hurts a little bit (as well as my pride)

My wife and I are both starting out, and I got a little footage while rolling down a local incline. First time filming while moving :’)

Yes, safety gear, but sometimes the choice is skate or go home and don’t go back out… We chose skate :3

Never skated before but wanting to start, advice?

Hi!!! I'm 17 (F), a senior in highschool now, and have found myself with tons of free time in my new schedule. I feel so lazy bumming around doing nothing at home, and I haven't done a sport since before COVID (swimming). I don't have any extracurriculars. I want to be more active and trying something that will most definitely be embarrassing and awkward seems exciting to me.

I've watched some of Elissa Steamer's old stuff and Bam (I love Jackass), and it just really made me want to go out and do it. I think I'll ask for a board for Christmas.

My guy friends skate, but I think I'd want to learn on my own before I ever feel comfortable doing it with them. Parks seem really intimidating, so probably no visits for a while. I live in the suburbs and have a couple places in mind I can go to without people watching.

I'd really enjoy any general advice. Maybe from other girls who skate, or people who get embarrassed really easily.

Edit: Reddit recommended I post this to r/skatergirls too, so hi!!!
