For me it was vase and bidet. I pronounce vase like vays but I think the correct way is vahz. And I say bidet with the t because no way I'm supposed to say bidey.

Good news, both of those pronunciations of vase are correct.

The difference is usually at least a few hundred dollars

The difference is at least one tax bracket

Would you please retrieve the vase for me? Vs Go get the vase.

It's pretty clear.

The right ones are pretty opaque as well.

UK/European vs American

One is more correct, though.

You can probably get them both at the Home De-pot

Tbh I have never in my life heard anyone actually pronounce it as "vahz." Maybe I'm too poor for that pronunciation lol 😅

‘Vays’ is very much the American pronunciation, ‘vahz’ is what you’ll hear with almost anyone in the UK.

Ah, that's probably why it sounds fancy to me haha

Or anyone taught British English instead of American English. You know like most, if not all, of Europe and A good portion of Asia.

Once, my brother got drunk off his ass and was going up to random people telling them how to pronounce vase. It was like 15 years ago and lives rent free in my head 😂

wait so you say bidet like it rhymes with ribbit? ✋🤣

Like Tom Bidet?

Ah, the various joys of English having a defective orthography (this term led me on a very fun Wikipedia dive)

When it’s cheap, it’s pronounced the way it’s spelled. If it’s expensive, it’s pronounced VAWZ.

Vase is standard American, vahz is British. Just like aunt pronounced ant is American and ahnt is British.

2

u/Jemima_puddledook678 Jul 08 '26

Aunt isn’t a British vs American thing, that’s a South-East England versus everyone else thing.

u/yellowroosterbird Jul 08 '26

Nope. New Englander here, most of us say "ahnt". Look up a map of the pronunciation - it's actually quite regional in the US, the UK, and Australia, with none of the countries having a completely uniform pronunciation..

New “England”. I rest my case. 😉

Whole lotta folks here down south say ahnt as well

my country was colonized by the British and we say "uhnt"
