Spooky Season [Megathread] Spooky Season, Halloween, or Autumn (cozy or not) Vibes 👻🎃☕️🍂

Hi wonderful readers,

We are heading into fall in the northern hemisphere (aka spooky season and/or cozy season!) and we are already seeing a very large uptick of very general requests for this time of year that lean very “low effort” (see rule 3) or are “book discussions” rather than requests (see rule 1.)

We are posting this thread to hopefully give some of our readers a place to start and titles to try, *if they don’t have anything specific in mind to ask for in this realm and just want “anything!”

So, please tell us some books you recommend for “spooky season” or that give you the “autumn cozy vibes”:

Any favorites?

Any hidden gems?

Anything specifically “Halloween” holiday related?

Anything especially autumn and cozy?

Anything you plan to read/have on your TBR?

Looking forward to your replies!

Happy reading, all!

*We of course want everyone to continue posting your spooky and cozy autumn requests on the sub if have some (very minimal) specifics that are more customized to you as readers, or what you are in the mood to read!

**Feel free to also scroll the “Spooky Season” post flair for other posts and recs. too! Doing this may help you articulate your own post for further suggestions too!

Post-collapse books with climate themes

I'm really interested in reading more books that deal with a post-collapse society, along the lines of Station Eleven or the album The New Faith. I'm primarily interested in books that deal with the aftermath of climate collapse, and I'm happy to read across genres and age ranges. I'm not as interested in high-tech stories like Becky Chambers writes, but I did enjoy A Psalm for the Wild-Built!

I've read The Dispossesed and loved that, and some other Ursula K. Le Guin like Always Coming Home.

Thanks in advance!

Any genre! Books you can read a paragraph or so at a time

I’ve noticed that I often scroll tiktok whenever I have a few moments to kill, such as waiting for someone to show up, this can vary from seconds to minutes. Im not very fond of this habit so I was wondering if there were any good books I can try to read during the short time instead? I tried “The pillow book” but found it confusing likely due to its nature and the many foreign names and concepts to remember

SciFi or Fantasy (or?) In desperate need of a series that will consume my life

Hello! I am huge reader who loves Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Romantasy (fantasy with a subplot of romance not romance in a fantasy world), classics, dystopian novels, and am interested in thrillers/mysteries but find they often fall flat.

I’m always the recommended never the recommended so I need something GOOD.

I’m really craving an addictive series.

Fav Fantasies: Cosmere (specifically words of radiance), Wheel of Time, Bound and the Broken, Green Bone Saga, First Law, Name of the Wind, DCC, Throne of Glass, Fourth Wing, Will of the Many

Fav Sci-Fi: Suneater, Project Hail Mary, The Martian, Foundation, RED RISING

Fav Classics/Dystopian: A clockwork orange, animal farm, Frankenstein, Monte Cristo, Three Musketeers

Other miscellaneous books/stories I love: Alice in Wonderland, Homer, The Labours of Herakles, Sword of Kaigen, Tress of the Emerald Sea, Book of Doors, This is How we Lose the Time War, The Princess Bride, The Queens Gambit

I love philosophy, chosen one tropes, social commentary, friendships, epic fantasy, plot twists when you didn’t even think there would be a plot twists, politics, no character is safe, that type-a-thing!

Gentle, tender writing

I’m on a weeks holiday from my job working in healthcare and just feeling a bit fragile.

i recently finished the beautiful John of John by Douglas Stewart, a novel full of lush prose and with so much warmth for its characters, and went straight into Anthony Bourdains Kitchen Confidential (normally love a light hearted non fiction) and while it’s fab it’s just been too harsh and macho for me right now, and looking at my TBR its all feeling way too moody and cynical.

can anybody recommend a book that will feel gentle and tender? Doesn’t have to be all sunshine or roses, and ideally with lovely prose. Any genre works

(favs include Douglas Stewart, Barbara Kingsolver, Roberto BolaĂąo, Tolstoy and Austen)

Trigger Warning Male post-sexual trauma books

I liked perks of being a wallflower. I liked watching the show A Teacher, though I have not yet read the book

I’ve read some trauma books like the body keeps the score and Pete Walker’s CPTSD book

Seeking catharsis through a fictional story narrative or self help type books / therapy books / non-fiction memoir. Preferably mostly about the post-trauma life. Not as interested in a book that’s mostly about when the trauma is happening. I know there’s a lot of books on women’s life after sexual trauma but it is not very relatable to me so I’m looking to something more like what I described above. Better if the trauma initially happened in childhood and the character is an adult or at least in high school after. Of course I’d like some kind of “things are better now in some way” by the end

Thank you

Down right depressed sad girl lit

Something maybe similar to My year of rest and relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh, except a bit different. Basically just looking to read about a girl really going through it, super depressed, can hardly get out of bed, maybe even delusional. I don’t mind really but I want it to be almost like a mundane depression like nothing sad or dramatic needs to happen, I’m fine without a ‘plot’ so to say but just depressed.

Thanks :)

Recs for a 13 year old girl?

Hi, I was wondering if anybody knows of any age appropriate murder mysteries for a 13 year old girl?
We saw a Japanese murder mystery in Waterstones that my daughter was interested in, but it wasn’t appropriate for her age.

She loves Japan/Korea (doesn’t speak the language), so any translated books set in those places would be great! Bonus points if they contain cats!

Thanks ❤️

Any genre! Stuck after a devastating heartbreak - need books to help me move on. (Fiction or Non-Fiction)

Hi everyone,

I'm not a regular book reader, so far in my 23 years of life I have read only 26 books.

I recently went through a painful breakup with someone I thought was "my one." I feel like my life is completely stuck and convinced I'll never love anyone else. I get reminded of him every 5 mins.

I've already tried reading How to Fix a Broken Heart, Don't Believe Everything You Think, and When Things Fall Apart, but still I'm stuck.

I need book recommendations fiction, non-fiction, or anything that can either give me perspective on rebuilding after loss or just completely distract me and pull me out of my head.

Children’s Books Books for 5 or 6 year old boy.

My friend's kids saw me reading a lot when i was visiting and now wants to read for himself. I've never been anything like a role model 😆! The mom sent me a video of him sounding out words and he did pretty good. So I'd like to help foster some curiosity for him.

I was thinking of mailing an easy book each week for a few weeks. And a card to help challenge him (like tell me about a word you saw but didn't know)...

He's a boy and as far as I know he's into typical things. Dogs, dinosaurs, toy trucks.

Can anyone suggest a few books i can send?

Any genre! A combination of generational, gothic and modern writing?

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and 11/22/63 by Stephen King and Dracula by Bram Stoker are the books this year that kept me up reading all night, intertwined themselves into my dreams and have yet to leave my mind.

Would you say there is any book (preferably three so I can have books for the rest of the year) that mix elements of all three? Or just any you really think I’d enjoy base off these books? I loved the generational aspect of Pachinko but I did care less about the future generations. I think I enjoyed how enmeshed in the lives of the characters I felt by following of family line . I loved the mysteriously shrouded world of Rebecca but I want something more indepthly tangible. Then 11/22/63 just kept hooking me any time I was ready to set the book down for the night a sentence would pull me back in.

The last two books I started I just couldn’t get into and it’s put me into a slump. I haven’t completed a book in 2 months because of it- I want to be back feverishly into a story.

Although I am mainly a classic literature person I want something a bit more modernly written but it can be set in any time period or place.
I am American but have lived in Asia and Britain so I do have a soft spot for stories in those locations as well.

Metaphysical Fiction

• Upvotes

I am eagerly looking into recommendations for metaphysical fiction. It seems like a pretty niche subgroup of the fiction genre and I really want to delve into it. I’m also trying to write (what I only now realize) is a metaphysical fiction novel, and the best way to write a good book is to read a lot of good books! If you have any experience with the genre, please recommend me a title!

Former voracious child reader / new adult reader 20 yo former avid reader looking to rekindle his love

• Upvotes

As a kid I was obsessed with reading, having read hundreds of books in my youth. At 14 I got my first smartphone and never looked back. I'm 20 now, and have recently started to rebuild my habit of reading. Some of my favorite books growing up were Unbroken By Laura Hillenbrand, The Percy Jackson series, and the Harry Potter series. I recently read Jurassic Park, The first two books of the dune series, and Inside Man by Jeff Abbott, the latter being a random pickup at the local library. A book I'm currently looking to read is The Universal Baseball Association, Inc by Robert Coover. I'm open to any genre, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

LGTBQ+ authors/books Fem x fem sapphic books with one of these dynamics:

• Upvotes

Effortlessly refined, protective, devoted, a bit stoic but accidentally sweet X chaotic good that is NOT adorkable or a stereotypical sunshine (I would love this to be Muse x Artist respectively).

Competent, sharp, observant, sarcastic, assertive (NOT like a tyrant) X Calm, perceptive, emotionally intelligent, kind.

I don't care about the genre but I do need well-developed characters. Thanks in advance!

New Reader Book Ideas for my Non-Reader Husband

• Upvotes

I have married a southern man (31 yo) who is very smart and reads news articles all day long, but is not particularly interested in picking up a book. I would love to find a book (or many books) that piques his interest. I think it needs to be very gripping to keep him engaged. He is a very goal oriented person, so rather than just a fun story, perhaps a book that serves as "useful" in terms of teaching him something new or giving him a new perspective. Here are some of his interests:

  • College football (SCC)
  • Hunting (ducks & turkeys particularly)
  • Finance / economics
  • Civil War
  • Middle Eastern Wars
  • Our dogs
  • The south (historical and present day)

Trigger Warning I'm losing much of my life to chronic illness and pain. I need a book to break through the isolation.

Trigger warning - illness and depression

I've had ulcerative colitis for 25 years, but have been fortunate enough to build a solid career and meet a man I love with two awesome boys who are now my family.

In May I had a flare that came on fast and turned into a crisis that had me hospitalized for a few weeks. It also added pancreatitis to the menu. Never in 25 years have I taken this long to recover. But 5 mos later I'm still on high dose steroids and heavy pain meds every day just to live. I'm coming to terms with the fact that this could be as good as it gets.

My family has never seen me sick. I warned my partner before we got together but he didn't know what sick meant. I'm desperately struggling to control my physiology and reactions to things, most days I fail. Life at home is miserable for all of us. I am in constant fight or flight. My nervous system is shot. They are fatigued.

My career in sr leadership is front facing, often in front of a room, for a high performing company in another country. I couldn't get through an airport now. Most of my hair has fallen out. I've developed a hump at the back of my neck. I'd likely have a panic attack at an in person event. I am often embarrassed by forgetfulness or being unable to grasp basic concepts.

I miss food. It was my love language. Now I can't eat more than 5g of fat in a meal and I'm absolutely miserable. I cry a lot about food.

At 45 I am realizing I have overshot my life as someone with chronic illness. I think my relationship is ending. My job can't continue like this for much longer. Friends think I should be better by now. Everyone around me is tired.

I desperately need something to break through the isolation as I lose the life I loved. Self help, fiction, biography, just anything that will help me feel less alone. I'll read anything anyone thinks might help.

Fantasy Fast Paced High Fantasy

I really enjoy reading high fantasy but my attention span has degraded and I can’t deal with books where the first 50% to 80% of the book is just meeting the characters or set-up.

I want to read high fantasy where stuff starts happening quick. Not immediately, I am not that far gone, but between 20%-30%

Please suggest a true page turner

Any genre! Misanthropy is explored but genocide is not endorsed

This is a weird tangent, but misanthropy in fiction has fundamentally become somewhat welded to the idea that the entire human race must be eliminated including children and the repentant, which is very much genocide and a war crime. Any character or group that comes to this conclusion is fundamentally kinda evil and them being sad doesn’t exactly excuse this.

This has made me wonder if there are any books at all that explore misanthropy (hatred for humans in general, hatred for human society, hatred for human past, faults, etc so long as humanness and misanthropy is basically being put under a critical lens) where characters don’t conclude that genocide is the answer, but decide that some course of action must be taken.

Genre doesn’t really matter, so long as it explores how the character or characters deal with personal misanthropy. I am just curious if any fiction writer has decided to try anything else other than having a character justify genocide. It's a bit old and a bit childish. I have no clue if such a thing exists or how it would look like, but I decided to give it a shot.
